Quote (nightspore @ Aug. 03 2008, 01:36) | Quote (Dirk Star @ Aug. 02 2008, 14:08) | Gustav Mahler symphony number 2 is the only one I`ve got from that list.Mahler liked to use bells though so I`m probably a little surprised that there was`nt more from him there.I`m actualy quite surprised that that`s all there is from anybody, or are they just quoting examples there?Mmm I`m a little confused?..Anyway like yourself I`d have to listen to hear where they used.I`ve got quite a few of Mahler`s symphonies but I don`t tend to listen to his earlier ones that much due to the strong operatic/vocal element in them. |
Hi Dirk, the Web page said the list was "selective",but I'm not sure what their selection criteria were. I have Mahler's second as well. There's a section right at the end that is one of my favourite moments in music, but apart from that I don't listen to Mahler much. I find his ninth, for example, too harrowing, as it's made pretty clear in it that he's saying goodbye to life. |
Well Mahler`s fifth,Seventh and then his Ninth, are probably my own personal favourites.I`ve got to be in a certain frame of mind to listen to them though. And also I kind of like to listen to them alone you know which that situation hardly ever arises in this house.Yes I`ve read that Mahler was aware of being close to the end of his life when he composed his ninth symphony.A lot of it can be quite harrowing and traumatic I think you`re right there.Plus there was that whole thing about him being obsessed with Beethoven`s Ninth Symphony throughout his entire career, and that he refused to even call it a ninth as such.I`m completely unfamiliar with the music of Beethoven though,so I`m kind of lost on that score(oops).Plus I`ll sometimes read things about Mahler`s music where I maybe realise that I`m getting nowhere near the full picture. It`s very difficult for me to express some of the feelings I get when I`m listening to his music is what I`m tryting to say.I`ll bear in mind what you`ve said about his second symphony there though next time I`m listening.
