Is there a complete list of Mike's songs anywhere?

It's quite confusing when:

- There are several versions/mixes of a song
- There are songs that are only on compilations
- A song on a compilation is merely an excerpt of an album song

(Yes, I know a 'song' is something sung; I use the term for the sake of brevity).

And it's particularly daunting when trying to decide which CDs to purchase. My first challenge was to choose either 'Boxed' or TB, HR, and Ommadawn individually. I picked 'Boxed', but you never know....

Thanks for any help/insight.

I have found that www.amadian.net is a nice resource for just what you've described here, if you haven't surfed it already.  As I recall, it hasn't been updated since around "Tr3s Lunas", but it's fairly detailed and in a format that's easy on the eyes-not like some sites that look like they were knocked out on an old typewriter (no offense intended to those sites).  It's not perfect, so your opinion may vary, of course.

:)

PS.  "Boxed" was an excellent choice.

It would be nifty to have an all-inclusive timeline of works - albums, songs, tours, milestones, etc. combined.

I have The Complete Mike Oldfield, and I was thrilled to have "Jungle Gardenia" and live "Platinum" in particular.

Interesting to see that "Portsmouth" appears to be a frequently featured rare track. I think that would be one of those tunes that so irritate Alan D. I must admit that while I love some of those "pip-squeaky" tunes, I don't listen to them as much as I used to. They aren't so good as repeat-play background music for hours at a time. Unless you're a postal worker, perhaps.

(I almost typed "Sir Alan", there.  :O   Probably because I'd recently addressed Sir Mustapha in a previous post.)

(It has occurred to me that "going postal" may be a strictly American slang term, so an explanation can be found on Wiki.)

Gladstoner, I think I know what you're getting at now.  I think what you were looking for was a listing of all MO recordings cross-referenced individually with a list of all the discs that each recording appears on.  If that is correct, then you're right-that would be damned handy to have.  The amount of edits, remixes, live and alternate versions can seem too large to wade through.  There may be a web site out there that does just that, but I've never found it.  Until then, the blue plate panel of experts found on this site should suffice.

And to second what Sweetpea said, some rarities cannot even be called rare anymore.  You can't swing a dead cat by the tail without hitting "Portsmouth".  Off the top of my head it may be one tune that's been on every compilation (except "The Best Of TB").  I may be wrong.

I remember being tickled pink that "Elements" had the video on it (and a bunch of others that I never even knew existed as videos).  Four young lasses doing a trad dance... how could you go wrong with that?

I procured a .rar archive file a few days ago that was so big it was almost 2 gigs. "Mike Oldfield entire discography1973-2005.rar", and then ran AVG virus scan on it. Every song name whizzed by as it checked every folder/file/song......hundreds of them.......funny. Must have been a huge project to archive all those MP3s.......by someone bored out of their skull. Oh well.....I'm bored tonight.

Mike's entire discography... I wonder how many minutes/hours/days long that is?

Thanks, Jim. So - using these calculations - at 21.66 hours long, one could spend nearly an entire day listening to MO without repeating.

We've had a plan for some time now which would make it much easier to do the kind of thing you're talking about here - cross referencing information and the like. That so far hasn't got past the talking stage, but hasn't been forgotten about.

In the meantime, I'll have a look to see what can be added to the discography here, in terms of additional notes, to try and at least address the confusion a tiny bit. I think a good start would probably be just to mention when a track is an alternate mix/version. Perhaps a bit of a shake-up's in order, I have to admit that the site isn't particularly well set up to address compilations.
