Hi there!

Im trying to achieve Mike's clean electric guitar sound, and have bought a Boss compressor after reading about this effect on these boards. The problem is, I still cant really get a good sound. If anyone already uses one, can they let me know what settings they have it on to get the superb Oldfield sound?

Thanks for any help.

(sorry, I couldn't be bothered to log in for this post!)

I'm fairly sure Mike doesn't use Boss units for compression - he has a channel taken from the mixing desk at the Manor for that stuff - however you should be able to get sort of close. I use a Behringer Composer, but I've managed to make similar effects using a few other compressors that I've had access to at various times.

I tend to use a very high ratio (anything between 12:1 and 25:1) with a low threshold, fairly fast attack to get that sort of click at the start of each note and a quick release so that the level is really flattened.

You generally need to turn it up a bit after this - so if you have any hum or hiss whatsoever, you are going to hear it really loudly. For this reason I often use a noise gate and/ or a volume pedal to stop any sound from coming out of the guitar into the compressor when I'm not playing.

Hi, thanks for the reply!

Ive got Volume, Tone, Attack, and Sustain on my Boss, so i'll raise the attack and sustain and give it a go. Any other tips for getting his clean sound? Ive tried the middle pick up on my Strat but its not really doing it.
