Quote (Spinne @ May 05 2006, 22:36) | It's a traditional song called Planxty Fanny Power, written by Turlough O'Carolan. It looks like Paddy likes to play this song. |
The real title is just "Fanny Power", being 'Planxty' the type or kind of piece. According to the Wikipedia, a plantxy is thought to mean a tribute to a particular person (hence "Planxty Fanny Power" is a tribute to Fanny Power). "Planxty" is believed to be a corruption of the Irish word and popular toast "sláinte", meaning "good health". Others claim that the word is not Irish in origin but comes from the Latin "plangere," meaning to strike or beat.
And, yeah, Paddy likes that song. Indeed, I spoke with him before a concert in Madrid (1997), and he agreed to play it though it wasn't on the programme!!
And of course... he introduced the song just as "Fanny Power"
