This was inspired to me by a question raised by Sir Mustapha in this forum (TubularTech) about some CD-burning software not being able to burn a CD without gaps at all, and about it being annoying when the tracks on a CD are connected (i.e. when the ending of a track tapers into the beginning of the next one). So this is especially aimed to those listeners out there who, like me, do not listen to a CD from start to end, but instead prefer listening to single tracks - and they find out that the tracks are connected. :) Does it bother you, or do you happen not to really mind? Whatever answer you choose, please tell me also why.

Hmm... Dark Side Of The Moon is my favourite album, and so you may guess what my opinion is. :)

Well, I'm kinda the opposite of you - I always try to listen to albums start to finish. Sometimes, I prefer discussing "albums" rather than "songs". I'm just a really album oriented person. :D Seriously though, whether if it bothers me or not... it depends. I like it when all songs combine with each other in order to form a bigger whole (Dark Side Of The Moon), but I find it annoying when the tracks crossfade with each other just for the hell of it (some Moody Blues releases). You need to remember that, at times, a song is a natural segment of another song. And in these cases, I don't like discussing them as individual "songs", so... I guess it's all relative. ;)

But yes, my albums have seguéing songs, :p

Well, yeah, obviously DSOTM is a start-to-finish album... it also is for me. :) You can't really isolate a song from it [except maybe "Time", which, of course, is connected to "The great gig in the sky" :)]. But I still can't understand the reason why on some soundtracks I have (e.g. the Gladiator soundtrack), the individual pieces should be all connected to each other. They're not connected in the movie, why the heck should they be all joined on the soundtrack CD? :)

Apart from all this, I have to tell you that I perfectly understand and respect your opinion on albums. ;)

I often like to just skip to the tracks I want, but I don't see the problem with having them connected. I can still skip between them with no problem, and it dosen't affect my listening in any way. If I do choose to listen to the whole album, having connected tracks allows the album to flow as it was intended. I have no problem with connected tracks.

It just sucks if I want to make a compilation with some of these tracks. When making it on CD, it's possible to make some adaptations, but when it's on cassete... I just have to cope with it. E.g., if I wanted to include The Moody Blues' "Out And In" in a compilation, I wouldn't be able to, because it starts on top of the previous song, "Beyond". That kind of thing is kinda unnecessary. What's worse is that the remastering guys unite "Out And In" with "Gipsy", thus destroying the side A / side B separation! Gah, not even I am that evil. :( :/ :)

I guess I'm the only one so far somewhat bothered by connected tracks. I prefer to be able to skip to a certain part of a longer track if I want to, as I sometimes don't have time to listen to the 30 minutes tracks such as Amarok or Ommadawn. I don't mind it much on Amarok & Ommadawn though, but on 'Nothing But' & 'Bridge to Paradise' on the Earth Moving album, it bothers me most, since I prefer Bridge to Paradise & don't always wish to listen to 'Nothing but' before being able to hear my prefered track.
Does anyone know of any versions of 'Bridge to Paradise' that is not connected with 'Nothing but' ?.

I absolutely love 'em! TSODE rocks because of this! It's like listening to one huge long track, but i can skip to parts i like better than others. the same with TB2, TB3, and TB2003.

I like 2003 better than the original [for a lot of reasons], and this is one of them. some parts are just better than others, and i don't want to either fastfoward, or listen to the parts i don't like.

but it depends on the style of the album too. Take Guitars for example. there's a lot of different melodies, ryhthms, etc.... and i think it wouldn't be right to mix them all together [because you wouldn't be getting the full range of MO, i think]. same with Voyager.

when burning a cd, burn "disc at once" instead of "one track at a time" to avoid the skipping phenemenon.
