Here's a few of the worst things someone could say to a Mike Oldfield fan, leaving them incandescent with rage ( or just a bit bemused, which ever suits)

~ Well, it's OK Tubular Bells, but what's it all about? And why did he write it?

~Mike Oldfield? Didn't he play guitar for Pink Floyd sometime ago?

~His music's OK, but it all sounds very much the same.

~Yes, it's good background music, especially Ommadawn.

~There's just not enough emotion in his music for me.

~Yes, he's a good guitarist, shame he doesn't play any other instruments

~Good melodies are wasted in his hands

~Oh Yes, Tubular Bells  II, the sequel

~Mike Oldfield? That's an anagram of Oe Milk Fiddle, isn't it?

any more? :)

Ooooh, that one riles me!
That, and "Mike Oldfield?  That's the guy that did the Exorcist theme tune, right?"

How about...

"Mike who?"

Initially I'm incredulous, but then I'm set up for a good 15 minute lecture on the music of Mike Oldfield. Funny, they are never stupid enough to say "Mike who?" again!;)

or

"Oh yes I like Mike Oldfield. I think I've got a copy of Tubular Bells up in the loft."

What's it doing up in the loft? It should be lovingly replayed each day as an act of worship.

This one is terrible...argh! And "Mike Who?"

Those 2 down upsets me a lot,really:

Even worse for me is:

"You don't like him because of his music,it's only because you think he's handsome."

What I do care is the music, which I love so much,Mike being a handsome and gorgeous bloke for me is just a mere detail  ;)

Another one is:
"Who's this another strange musician that you like?"

ooohhhh...one of my hates about people who make "off the cuff remarks" about something they no very little about!

In the past these 3 have probably irritated me the most:

"Sounds Like the muzak you get in a poor hotels lift"

"Wasn't Hergest Ridge just Tubular Bells played backwards"

"Isn't that the guy who can't write lyrics"

You then discover they haven't heard any of Mikes music.

Makes me so mad I could crush a grape!!

I got an answer to every question! Let's see:

~ Well, it's OK Tubular Bells, but what's it all about? And why did he write it?

That's the great thing about it. It isn't about anything, and it was written for no particular reson!

~Mike Oldfield? Didn't he play guitar for Pink Floyd sometime ago?

Everybody knows he didn't, but correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Tim Renwick play both with Mike and the Floyd on different occasions? And Rick Fenn did an album with Nick Mason!

~His music's OK, but it all sounds very much the same.

Sometimes I wish it did! For better or for worse, it does not.

~Yes, it's good background music, especially Ommadawn.

Ommadawn works as background music. HR less so, and TB no way! Incantations is my favorite album, and it's excellent as background music.

~There's just not enough emotion in his music for me.

Who would say that and why?

~Yes, he's a good guitarist, shame he doesn't play any other instruments

Who would say that and why?

~Good melodies are wasted in his hands

Who would say that and....why?

~Oh Yes, Tubular Bells  II, the sequel

Could be me saying that. Add "poor" to that.

~Mike Oldfield? That's an anagram of Oe Milk Fiddle, isn't it?

Didn't the Incredible Stringband have a song called "Dear Mike Oldfield"? Oh no, that was "Dear Old Battlefield"!

Am I scary for thinking of this thread as "Funny things to say to fellow, unsuspecting Mike Oldfield fans"?

Well, anyway...

"Mike Oldfield? Nah, I don't like pop music."

"Mike Oldfield? Nah, I don't like new age."

"Mike Oldfield? Meh, he became mediocre after Equinoxe."

"Mike Oldfield? You mean, that guy that sings like a woman?"

The "new age" remark is the most irritating one actually. It was heard frequently in the 80s, many years before TSODE. The only remotely "new age" thing Mike had done up to that point was Incantations, and that was the least heard of his albums. Is Discovery new age? Is Family Man new age? Is songs about airplane trouble new age?

It seems Mike was never accepted by the public as a rock musician, simply because he didn't play the piano like Elton John.

Terry Oldfield, that's new age!   :D

"Moonlight Shadow" by Maggie Rielly

- Terry Wogan still introduces it like that on BBC radio 2

Ommadawn & Incantations background music?? Nooooooo!!! Never!!

But I think it is interesting & perhaps not so surprising that very many similar things drive us crazy where the general perception of Mike Oldfield is concerned.

I suppose for me, this came from a little frustration of knowing that for thirty years I've heard & understood music that is so absolutely amazing and full of so much... em...'good stuff', and that some people just don't get it, they miss the point totally. My life has been enhanced by it's presence. In discovering this music I've enabled myself to find a constant and renewing source of energy & wonderment. I have found treasure. I can't put it any differently. And when I find something that impresses me so much, I want to share it, I want people to feel that inner joy too. Trouble is, not everyone has their ears open ( or their minds).

I did exaggerate in my earlier remarks about melody & emotion etc but just to express, in a rather ironic way, that Mike has a beautiful, unique and life affirming talent. The music can effect you deeply. I feel that if only people would stop worrying about the here and now so much, & let the doors in their minds fling open, then maybe, just maybe the world would be a better place. It would sound great too.

I think new age is a bit of a misleading description too, for any music. Critics can't think what else to say so they put that because it covers music without words!

& it's not just Terry Wogan, everyone @ Radio 2 credits Moonlight Shadow to Maggie Reilly. We need to point this out!!

& it's quite strange that people often get confused with Mike and Jarre when the only real similarity in their music is the fact that it's instrumental.

This was actually asked to me various times, in a slightly different form. "Mike Oldfield? Wasn't she the one who sang Moonlight Shadow? She had a nice voice!!" :D   :D

To me "background music" is not an insult. It's just down to the flawless design of these two albums. Crank up the volume and it's emotionally gripping. Tone it down and the music doesn't call for your full attention.

I'm listening to Klaus Schulze's "Kontinuum" album right now. Also great background music!

Concerning "Moonlight Shadow by Maggie Reilly"; I've also heard "Everytime We Touch" as being credited to Maggie Reilly and Mike Oldfield! So I guess the two are eternally associated with each other.

Thinking on from this, can you imagine someone standing up ready for their 'moment' to perform the kareoke ( not sure how you spell that ) Tubular Bells. It would be a long wait until they could finallly announce the Grrrrrand Piano & they could look a tiny bit silly!!

            :)

Cause nobody remembers who won anyway !! :D

It still baffles me that Mike could be any good after having covered Abba. But somehow he managed to be good for several years after that sorry incident.

He even managed to be good after having covered Free. Something tells me he'd even have survived covering Lynyrd Skynyrd!
