You will have to download this file as its pretty large

http://www.bigdisk.co.uk/295752

the Password is tweety

Paul bought a songbook Tubular Bells in Birmingham, 1970's, it was a piano arrangement, thinking he would never be able to play the piece. The technology now enables us to interpret the piece.
Paul has used acoustic guitar, classical guitar, banjo and mandolin. Plus midi. I thinks Mike's pet hate :-) plus with collaboration from my sister, vocals, Brummie of ceremonies at the end.  Paul puts a bit of vocals on too (ie monks bit).
Paul loves anything of Mike's. When he hits a home run, he has got to be the Bruce Lee of what he does :-)
Paul has learned how to structure and arrange from this experience, useful to apply to his own material for the futre, he loves all the time changes in this piece, at times a real headache.
Its a shortened version with references to David Bedfords arrangement.

Enjoy!

best wishes Paul and Sue Harrison, Greetings from Birmingham....

Paul may have been talking in reference with this interview, old one i might add http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zcw7Ji7HTng

Obviously Mike doesn't totally hate Midi, as he uses it on almost everything he does these days, Paul just meant it tongue and cheek. :-)

Mike just hates the fact real music skill is being lost in preference to machines, but who knows since that very early interview he might of changed his view and sees the technology in a new way.

best regards

Sue x

We hate it, hate it hate it, but unfortunately now its related with our city, so I suppose we have to make the best of it, to be honest neither of us relate to Birmingham now, we liked it better when Birmingham was scruffy, with lots of market traders, loads of chip papers, banana skins and subways, ahhh those were the days!!!!! Only distant memories now :-( It seems like a city of outsiders really. Glad they kept the Rotunda though :-D

Thanks Morti for downloading, Paul has worked very hard on it, I just love that mid part bit with all the mandolins and guitars, lurrrrrvley, bit embarrassed about my hammed accent bit tho hahaha!

Yeah, I remember those days, although I was rather young at the time. I used to live in Aldridge which is okay, but it means that every time I'm in Birmingham I can think "at least it's not Walsall". Canterbury, where I am now, is excellent anyway.

The cover is sounding great so far. I'm about 8 minutes in, well done. Up to this point it's sounding rather too much like the original for my liking with a few subtle differences here and there but I guess that's kind of the intention, it's pulled off well. He should get a band together and do it live, that'd be interesting.

Let's see how I feel about it towards the end.

Yes I think he is depending on the listener to spot the differences they are quite deliberate, he thought it would be pointless making a complete carbon copy of the origional.  I am sure he will be appreciative of your comments :-)

Yeah, there are some neat little changes here and there and I reckon your (sister's?) vocals at the end are rather good as well (can't understand the MoC bit though, perhaps I've been away from that part of the country for too long). Spotted the nods to David Bedford as well.

Nicely done overall, not sure about the "Trash Guitars" bit and the "Finale" section is rather slow for my liking, but besides that it's very impressive and well done. Clearly he's a very good technical player as well.

Yeah those are my vocals, singing at the end, I am his sister Sue. Paul says thanks for your comments, well spotted with the David Bedford arrangments.  Mike gives us fans a real challenge.
He must think being as he is into star trek that we are the borg LOL! And that we are trying to assimilate him.
Paul agrees with you about the timing, as at the time he was having problems with sync on the software. Finally he found out what it was, after the piece. He had set ASO drivers wrong. To edirol 25. But alls ok now, for his next offerings :-)

thanks again

Sue and Paul

Had a listen and quite enjoyed this cover.  I actually like the parts where Paul gets "creative" and diverts from the original.

The hammed vocals reminded me of the occasional Beatles song where you would hear some banter by John or Paul.

The whole piece is very consistent. Well done !! It flows very nicely. I wished there could have been some more guitars (possibly electric especially at 11:11, at the very end, ...). At the beginning, the bass is almost inaudible.
As well, in my opinion the 'aah' voices at 17:00 is panned too much in the left/right positions.
Does he also play the keyboard to program the midi parts ?

My vocal Paul chose to do very deliberately, because I was feeling a bit off that day LOL, and I was getting mad with him, as he was expecting me to sing one note a very long time and I couldn't breath lol, being out of practice a long time, so he made it different by changing the character to just one voice and decided to pan. And also dropping in a vocal, mainly when I ran out of breath hehe. The panning was mainly to disguise this, but obviosly you rumbled us hehe bah! I wonder how Mike's sister felt after her vocal take? :-) He agrees with you about more guitars.  On his next efforts he will put more of these in. Did you spot the banjo and mandolins on there?

Thanks fastguy, were always messing around doing silly stuff, Paul liked it as it was 'regional' lol hehe
