As this "General Discussion" forum has more or less swallowed up what was once the "Criticism & Humour" one, I think I'm entitled to post this thing here. :) It's not how I would like the new album to be - it's just some crazy ideas that I thought up after reading the other topics about this. So, even if it's all in the future tense, this is total fantasy and no reality. ;)

The new album's title will be:
Mike Oldfield & Friends: Getting it Together [aka The Ultimate Collaborations Album].

All the music will have an electronic/synthy foundation, but it shall feature plenty of real instruments as detailed below.

It will come out initially on a limited LP/Cassette edition; the CD (see below) will be released later.

Side One will feature a long (24-25 min.) instrumental track, divided in six movements:

- Movement 1 (a quiet melodic section) will feature Paddy Moloney on Uillean pipes.
- Movement 2 (tempo picking up a bit) will feature David Bedford playing piano and synths along with Mike.
- Movement 3 (a rock section) will feature Simon Phillips on drums.
- Movement 4 (an 'ethnic' section) will feature Pierre Moerlen on vibes and all kinds of strange percussion instruments.
- Movement 5 (an upbeat folk-like tune) will feature Leslie Penning on recorder.
- Movement 6 (the grand finale) will feature Mike as MC introducing all the others, playing guitar on top and of course concluding the piece by bashing his bells!  :)

Side Two will feature six songs:
- Song 1 will feature Maggie Reilly.
- Song 2 will feature Barry Palmer.
- Song 3 will feature Anita Hegerland.
- Song 4 will feature Jon Anderson.
- Song 5 will feature Nikki B. Bentley.
- Song 6 will feature Mike and all the others, each one singing a line or two and joining at the end in a big choir.

The CD version, without copy protection, will be released 2-3 weeks after the LP/Cassette one. It will feature 7 tracks: track 1 will be the long instrumental piece, not broken down into tracks but indexed (you know what CD indexes are?); tracks 2 to 7 will be the songs.

A Limited Edition DVD, included free with the CD, will feature the videos (all made with CGI) for the six songs, plus a video performance, by Mike on acoustic guitar (or piano) and Leslie Penning on recorder, of Leslie's section in the long piece. (The full piece won't have a video.) As extras, the DVD will feature remixes of the songs by well-known artists, including Moby, and a 'do your own mix' DVD-ROM feature allowing viewers to mix the songs by themselves. The DVD-ROM section will also feature downloadable, high-quality mp3s of the remixed versions of the songs.

If the album is successful, a short European tour will follow, with Mike backed by a 7-piece band and three singers, two girls and a boy - they will not be the ones featured on the album, but new talents selected through a competition. The tour will feature the long instrumental piece and (some of) the songs, as well of material from Tr3s Lunas, and, of course, some of Mike's hits. ;)

...And this is where the fantasy ends. :)

That sounds fantabulous, especially the remix by Moby but I think I would actually prefer them to do a real collaboration together. Of course now the real album is probably going to be a let down, thanks mate!

Ugo, you should become Mike's agent or something and persuade him to actually do this!! I can't think of anything I'd rather see him do.

Raven: I'm sure that not even Mike's agent could ever persuade him [and all the other ones I mentioned!] to do something even remotely like this. I'm just wandering around in the realm of pure fantasy. :D

Wether, fact or if it remains pure  fiction, it sounds great  :) , Especially side one.

You know what, moonchildhippy and Jules? I have to say that I did actually expect people telling me how good does Side 1 of this hypotetical album sounds. :) From reading the comments on another similar discussion on the new album, I've got the slight impression that mentioning Mike doing (pop) songs is something like mentioning Britney Spears (of someone like her) to heavy metal fans. :D Not that I have anything in particular against Britney and other acts belonging to her genre, but the general attitude in the TubularBoard towards Mike's songs seems to me to be something like this.  I would really love someone to prove me wrong. :D

Am I being serious? I don't really know. :)

I like a few of Mike's songs, but if it wasn't for his instrumental masterpieces from the 70s I think it's safe to say that I would never have bought a Mike Oldfield record at all.

Hmm..Ugo disappears into fantasy land, dreaming of his Ultimate album whilst OlracUK stands firmly in reality.

But, But.......

Finally Mike realises that the lonelyness of hiding with a few mates in front of a Plasma screen is not as exciting as riding to the pub on his latest motorbike then drinking a guiness and eating a curry before heading into the studio for a jam session.

Simon on drums, Tom Newman behind the desk, paddy and Pierre giggling in the background. Fanny with the map book open and a large marker pen and AutoRoute (and a calculator for receipts)

Mike sets up a server for fans to download the tracks as they exit the mixing desk, and then decides it will be cheaper to do his shows via Skype and video conferencing.

Negative? Me?

Nope, Mike definitively won't do a 'Hergest Ridge II'

So... Any volunteer?

Daft as it maybe but i would love Mike to do a narrative / story album, such as War Of The Worlds, i think Mike would do a fantastic album. You could have the lot in this album, drama, emotion, energy...the list is endless. Guitars, drums, percussion, strings and no synths!! bliss.

Hey Familyjules, i`ve just had beer and cheese!!!! Great way to finish off a saturday night.   :)

According to my ideal plan, Jabula would rather fit in Movement 4. :)

Hey Ugo.

What about Phil Collins, Morris Pert, Simon Phillips, Pierre Moerlin and Graham Broad doing the ultimate drum solo together...It just might bring the house down.

@ Ratty: As interesting as that would be, I think that a massive drum solo may be a little boring - but maybe it's just me who sometimes finds 'em boring. ;) [Not meaning that I don't like 'em at all... I like Zep's "Moby Dick" a lot! :)] Plus, I think Phil Collins, although he's IMHO a very good drummer, has little to do with Mike, having played only on two songs during Mike's whole career. :)
