Hiya, Maybe I'm getting old, as I lately really have come to enjoy peaceful instrumental Movie scores.
Do any of you like or listen to Movie Scores. I love James Newton Howard, but also Basil Poledouris, Thomas Newman, Rachel Portman, John Barry & James Horner.
I even enjoy Jerry Goldsmith, Alan Silvestri, Danny Elfman, & John Williams.
Am I odd, getting old at 33, or do any of you enjoy this sort of music?

The only instrumental soundtracks I can stand to listen to are the Ennio Morricone Clint Eastwood trilogy and for some reason Dr Who at the radiophonic workshop albums.  I find most soundtracks seem to be basically background music or is that the whole point of them?

Yup. I listen to quite a lot of film scores. So far my favourites are
- Edward Scissorhands (such a tear-jerking film)
- The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (the whistling is legendary)
- Blade Runner (Vangelis is excellent!;)
- Trainspotting (best of the 90s fused with some classic oldies)
- The Nightmare Before Christmas (full of some wonderfully quirky songs)
- Serenity (folk songs and action music - what more could you ask for?)
and, of course, The Killing Fields.

Hi
I too like Danny Elfman, Planet of The Apes is a good example.
And some horror movie music is great too, for example Wojciech Kilar`s soundtrack to Polanski`s The Ninth Gate- spooooooky. :O

Danny Elfman's pretty good, even if everything sounds almost the same. Other favourites:

- Maurice Jarre. He is actually more talanted than his son. Try out his work for "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" or "Enemy Mine".
- Mike Oldfield. Yes, I love "The Killing Fields"
- Philip Glass: "Koyanisqatsi", "Powaqatsi", and "Mishima".

Danny Elfman's pretty good,

it might be known or might not be known but heres a thought:
Danny Elfman is the guy who does the Simpsons music, so he has to be good in my book!

Other more unusual soundtracks I like:

"Flash Gordon" by Queen.  It is rather unique
"The Firm" - Dave Grusin. It's piano jazz. I'm not a huge fan of piano jazz, but it is very effective in this film.
Anything by Joe Jackson

----

As for more conventional movie theme music, I forgot to mention Trevor Jones ("Dark Crystal"). There's an Oldfield connection with this one as well.

I've bought quite a few soundtrack albums, TB if you can include that, Killing Fields, Forrest Gump, The Dish, Almost Famous, Rocky Horror, HAIR, I am Sam (fantastic, all Beatles songs sung by modern artists), the X Files, Fantasia, Moulin Rouge, Braveheart, The Commitments, Tomb Raider and Toys.

I like all the well known artists in this field, Danny Elfman, Thomas Newman, Ennio Morricone, James Horner, John Williams (did he do Star Wars?) and I absolutely love the Dr Who theme.

Must buy Dark Crystal (and Labyrinth) on dvd, love those movies, as well as Edward Scissorhands (well actually pretty much anything with Johnny Depp).

Tracy.
