What's upp with Dark Star magazine? Is it generally read by fans on this forum? Can a subscription be recommended?

I tried a subscribe in late 2003, but something must have gotten wrong with the money transaction because I never received a magazine. After I haven't got around to sort it out, but I'm thinking of it.

The reason I ask if it's generally read by Oldfield is fans is that there was a very interview with one Philip Newell (the engineer on Incantations) which would propably be relevant to a lot of discussion we've had here. And it seems noone has read it.
Has anyone read that interview. Is it worth buying a copy for?

I have loads of copies but I haven't read them all. I think my current subscription has run out. It's a good little magazine, but I guess they only put one out when there's enough to talk about.

As Andy (OlracUK) said somewhere here recently: 'Don't get Alan D started on Dark Star magazine'.

Somewhere down the line I have a still current subscription, but I long ago lost track of how many copies I'm still paid up for. It's not just that you pay and then wait, and wait, and wait (though mostly, waiting is what you get for your money); I understand that news on the Mike Oldfield front is pretty thin on the ground. My main complaint is that it's almost impossible to try even to help. The most recent issue (I'm stretching the meaning of the word 'recent' quite a lot) carried an illustrated article by me on MusicVR, but its eventual appearance seemed to be a triumph of persistence (mine) over silence (theirs). Typically, email after email goes unanswered.

I know they do it for love, unpaid. I'm not unappreciative of those situations, because almost all my own spare time activities fall into a similar category. But mostly, nothing gets done. So I decided that my first article for Dark Star would be my last, and I won't renew my subscription when it eventually runs out. Not so much Dark Star, as Black Hole, I'm afraid.

The Philip Newell interview was over two issues that I edited. It was conducted by Paul Harris and covered a lot of the detail that Philip first told me many years before but which I'd never written down. It includes a lot about The Manor, Ommadawn and the Exposed Tour (plus the incident when Philip was attacked by Clyde the lion at Througham).

This year I have interviewed Tony Palmer for the next magazine and Chris Dewey has told me it is nearing completion. I also did a small review of Changeling. Chris has ultimate responsibility for the magazine, website and subscriptions but he is a very busy lad with a young family.

Since the launch of mikeoldfield.com the official status of Dark Star has become null and void. This is something that has made running a once creditable organisation that much more difficult. You may find that the next issue is the last.

Airborne:

I think it's great that someone bothers to track people down and do interviews about Mike's past and present, so I'm worried that this won't be done unless there is somehwere to publish articles. Have you thought about stop making a printed product and turn it into a web-only thing? That cost almost nothing, and I think you will reach more people. But on the other hand you won't get paid even for your expenses.

I don't think many people are prepared to make a monetary transaction and order a product like a fanzine these days.

I very nearly subscribed online, recently (or did I download a form to post to them? I can't remember) Either way, after reading the posts on here regarding the (in)frequency of issues, I'm afraid I changed my mind...  :(

I've got that CD-ROM with past issues,it's very interesting to read and so on.

I had a problem with them when I bought the Millennum Bell poster, they had written my address wrong and it took about 1 year to recieve that, and they gave me 2 free issues of Dark Star as an apologize regarding the long long time I've waited for the poster.

The problem seems to me that now it's only one person who is currently running it and it takes time to deal with all the stuff regarding the fan club and personal life.

But if you count MO.com as an official MO information service,I'd say NOPE at all...Dark Star website has got that wonderful tourography which when I need some info on a particular tour,I go visit there!
