I'm curious to know if any of you ever seen a Mike Oldfield theme or melody ripped-off by other artist. In a blatant way, that is. :)

HO,HO,HO MO Fan very good  :D

The only person I can think of who's blatantly ripped off Mike Oldfield is.. err.. Mike Oldfield. Why let anybody else ripp you off when you can just do it yourself.

Sorry if I insist on this... Claudio Simonetti (Goblin), Main theme from 'Profondo Rosso'. Just listen to that keyboard... tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, tinkle... :) :D This, combined with the irregular rhythm and the fact that PR was one of the very first Italian horror movies... all leads to infer that Mr. Simonetti was (at least) inspired by the TB-Exorcist association. ;)

There are lots & lots of people who use bells, but they don't use them substantially enough for any of them to be defined a MO rip-off. :)

John Carpenters theme for Halloween is very similar to TB theme.

It was mistakinely reported on this site a year or so ago that Sarah Brightman was playing "Sentinel" during intermissions during her "La Luna" tour . Her "Siren" song, from her "Dive" album, is quite close to "TB 11"  main theme. This was performed during the "La Luna" tour and explains the misconception that she was actually playing TB 11 during intermissions.  Mike and Sarah's producer (of Enigma fame) have a mutual friend in Cretu. I don't think it was an outright "rip-off" in the classical sense ,but rather a friendly "tip of the hat" to Mike. Likewise,Mike's "monk" section of TDSOE album may have been a nod to Enigma. (or revenge ,lol) ;)

Hahahaha... and what about Santa Maria (TMB) and Vangelis' main theme for the 'Conquest of Paradise' movie? How should we call that? Tip-of-the-hat, homage, imitation or rip-off? LOL.

Yeah you could easily tip the scales the other way and point out where Mike has desperately ripped off other people. I've alway's thought the TSODE at its worst sounds a bit like an Enigma album in places but there's also just a bit of Vangelis in there too. I mean Lament for Atlantis sounds unbelievably like something Vangelis would write and thats no coincidence, Arthur C Clarke is a huge Vangelis fan and Mike did ask him what music he liked when he met Arthur pior to the albums composition. And I've always thought Mont St Michel, though a nice piece, sounds very much like somebody elses soundtrack.

@ Toby: sorry if I clash with you again :), but "Lament" sounds very Mike-ish to me... I hear no Vangelis in it apart from the horn sounds. What sounds very  Vangelis-ish in TSODE, to me, is "Magellan", but always for the sounds used in it, and not for the music itself. :) I agree that "Mont St. Michel" sounds soundtrackish, though... a little bit Kubrickian. ;)

What I think is very Vangelis sounding in Atlantis is that little piano tune over the top of that pulsing little backing rhythm, thats a very Vangelis thing to do isn't it? It is to my ears anyway. I would agree with you about Magellan however, some people have commented that that track sounds like a Jean-Michel Jarre piece but I can't see it myself. Jarre rarely tries to sythesize the sound of real instruments, especialy bagpipes.

Though I still think the drums on Magellan sound identical to John Bonham's drum thumping on When The Levee Breaks.

The tune that is played everytime some one on a commercial mentions "Pentium Processors" is the first few keys of TB! :D
