Dream Theater is a fantastic progressive metal-rock group of amazing creativity and virtuosity... The best prog group of this decade for me...

I would like to know what the real music lovers (like the oldfield fans!;) think about it ?

I've read about the neo-prog that has appeared after Marillion, after IQ, but I don't know where to begin.

What is Dream Theatre like? What prog band are they most similar to? Are they given to hard-rock instrumentals like classic Yes, or quasi "power balled" anthems like some of the progressive bands made? Are the subjects more "here and now" like Marillion, or do they play with classical mythology like Genesis?

Where the Falls of Minnehaha
Flash and gleam among the oak-trees,
Laugh and leap into the valley."

Well, I'm no expert on this band but I know them a bit. No classical mythology as far as I'm aware. Definitely more 'here and now', more so than Marillion actually I'd say. Of the 'classic' prog rock bands they are definitely the closest to Yes and Rush, but they are more modern, and heavier. Very little similarity with Genesis really, except maybe with "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" - they did an album called "Metropolis pt. 2" (an album-long continuation of a song on an earlier album) which seems to have a similarly "urban" lyrical theme, though admittedly I never paid close attention to the lyrics on the latter.

I personally think they're pretty good, but a bit devoid of emotion and too ready to show off their technical skills, with odd time signatures just for the sake of having them there and stuff like that. They are amazing technically, but then, many bands are... They're not bad really, but I'll take Rush (or Tool, for that matter) over them any day of the week.

"Metropolis p.2 - Scenes From A Memory", "Images and Words" and "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence" are my favoutires. The last album "Train Of Thought" is also very good but it's a little bit too heavy for me. Some songs are
so long and so complex that I wonder how they can remember
all the things they have to play on stage...absolutely phenomenal...But, it's cool, because this group is not only
a kind of technical demonstration, there are a lot of cool songs/ballad with cool moods...and the emotion is always present...They really are the sons of Yes, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa and some good metal groups...

"In the name of god" is my favourite one. I`ve heared it for the first time in train, during long (something about 9 hours) journey home from vacations. My friend took out his walkman and played me that track.
Man... Half in sleep, half awake I listened to it as I stare trought the car window. Dream Theatre is really a stage of dreaming - in fact I no longer saw the shifting landscape and no longer sat inside the coach...
That was something really amazing - not many pieces made me that (I`m not takin Oldfields` track into account :)  )

A Change of Seasons is my favourite! I know the whole song. And I can even play it on drums. Yes the whole song! ;)

DT are just plain fantastic. First of all, they're far heavier than the '70s progressive rock bands we've known. For the most part, they're metal. The lyrics are all about the here and now, about the contemporary person's place in society, his/her feelings, happenings in life, experiences. They're all extremely technical (Berklee graduates) but, unlike others, they know how to convey feelings; they're not sterile at all. Very highly recommended. I currently have two CDs from them: Awake and Falling Into Infinity.
