I've allways admired the sound MO got on Five Miles Out. Especially the drums, who are really powerful. Everytime there is a tom roll there's this huge, thundering sound that sounds like electronic drums but now quite. I allways wondered how he did that.
Just recently I stumbled across the "ready mix" track (an outtake from the FMO sessions with Carl Palmer on drums). As the title implies, it's a very rough mix of an unfinished song. All instruments are presented "dry", and one thing becomes obvious; the drums are recorded in a room with very strange acoustics. When Carl does a tom roll I recognize the sounds instantly from FMO, Mount Teidi and Family Man. I'm beginning to suspect that the drums were recorded in the tiled room (visible on the FMO inne sleeve). On the record the drums sound really hi-tech, but I'm pretty sure that the huge, thundering sound comes from an un-damped, noisy drum kit recorded in what sounds like a public bathroom. It sounds awful when separated, but works really well in the final mix on the album. Simple means to accomplish the extraordinary!
Has anyone seen any more pictures of the studio pictured on the FMO sleeve? Any techincal specs of the equipment?
