I suppose this grand old lady of the seas is simply too expensive to maintain. The engines and other mechanical parts of the ship would need to be replaced or updated. Costs outweigh possibilities with QE2. After all the Royal family sold her for the same reason. Id love to see her transformed into a floating museum of sorts. Deb

:/ Don't know what you , British people , are thinking about this but i think it's a sad story ! Only money counts now and too bad for the symbols ! Of course it reminds me of the sad story of the France  re named the first time to "Norway" and then named again the second time to "Blue Lady" and finally demolished in India during two years ! ( ... don't speak about the pollution this has surely made ... )

When the France has been sold many people in France were very sad and even furious . A French singer , Michel Sardou has sung during this time:

"Don't ever call me France again ! The France she dropped me ! Don't ever call me France again ! This is my Last Will !" (Hope it's a good English translation )

This song had really drew attention and made a real National scandal in France .

My Grandmother got to travel on the QE2 once during the 70`s.She got a little lost at one point and had to ask a member of the crew where the nearest toilets were located on the boat? He was`nt best pleased with her request and replied quite indignant.. "Boat madam? Why this is a ship! "

They could always try breaching it on some rocks somewhere strategic, and then the British Secret Service could use it as office space... "Now pay atttention 007..The toilets are up the first flight of stairs there, and second on the left you can`t miss it"

In my first post I meant the Royal Yacht Brittania was sold by The Royal Family. That was sad too. Cunard now have the Queen Mary sailing. I remember when QE2 made her last stop in Hobart. She sailed to Sydney to meet the Queen Mary and was given a huge send off. It was a beautiful ship and service was true English hospitality and pride in everything, from how towels were arranged in your suite to the finest dining on the seven seas. I miss the old ships, they have a character the new huge floating cities don't. Maybe Im old fashioned. Whoever buys QE2, I do hope she is not divested of all her glory. Deb

RMS Queen Mary is a retired ocean liner that sailed the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967 and is permanently berthed in Long Beach, California serving as a museum ship and hotel.

RMS Queen Mary 2 is a transatlantic ocean liner and flagship of the Cunard Line.

Shame QE2 the album wasn't out then.Nice little map on the inner sleeve.
I saw the QE2 once off Southampton a few years before she was decommisoned.Fine looking ship.Just another sad reminder of British industry going down the swaney(ie our shipbuilding past). But of she's that outmoded now then the cost of runnin gher would be ruinous and would have to be paid for buy the British public via tax.hence the sale.

Hi Manintherain, I was referring to the new Cunard Queen Mary 2. I was aware of the first QM, now retired of course. I think the days of British cruise lines are still going strong. Especially trans Atlantic crossings. They also visit Australia during our summer. Up to 30 visits by liners to Hobart this summer. I prefer British owned liners to American liners. Deb

So, recycle the sob(well, since ships are "she", dob) and construct QE3. I may have procured new dwellings(a happy one!;) if anyone cares anymore. In a nice area conducive to Eddy and music production. Close to my job too. Sorry for my past depressing moods, but anyone who still cares, keep your fingers crossed, I'll know Friday. It's a very nice place with brand new "everything". Lot's of trees and grass for me and Eddy to romp and play( he must have a huge understanding of English, cuz when I told him it had lots of trees, he jumped up and down). Very nice, very clean. But mostly, everything brand new. I just hope my vintage Oberhiem still works when I hook it up(I mothballed it when realized this place sucks, my 12 string filled the void). So much "CLASS" in that Oberhiem sound. Think Lyle Mays. Thats Oberhiem. Trying to look forward, Jim

Nice to see you posting again Jim. Missed your comments. I hope your new home and little Eddy will be much happier. Living in an area that gets you down really affects your whole life. I live next to rich snobs, very unpleasant, esp cause Im the only single woman living alone between them. Never been invited to bbqs or their cliques soirees. When they want something of course they pretend to be friendly. I am so keeping to myself, they are never happy and fight about how they want to spend their money. SHALLOW, SHALLOW, SO EMPTY. Give Eddy a valentine dog bikky for me. The QE2 yes its sad but not a matter of national interest. And Mike never sailed on her, so I can't figure out why he named an album QE2. Deb

That's a great story about your grandma, Dirk.  Made me smile.

During the same decade she was traveling on a flight to New York to visit her daughter, and happened to be sat next to Tim Brooke-Taylor.She knew she recognised him from somewhere and in a sudden moment of inspiration she asked him if he was one of The Bachelors?  :p She said he was a really nice fella though, very friendly, traveling with his wife and young son at the time.

Here is a very haunting and altogether marvelous song, which may or may not be about a ship being sent to the breakers yard.My guess would be that it probably is`nt about a ship at all in fact, but the wonderful imagery here coupled with the captivating music is both immesnsely powerful and affecting imo.Scott Walker meets The Electric Light Orchestra..      The Wreck Of The Beautiful Divine Comedy
