I think Enya is the female version for MO, listening her album 'The Memory of Trees', her style, her sense and over all, her fantastic music. Anybody has an opinion like mine?

Greetz.

I love Enya, her music and her voice, but IMHO she can't be considered a female version of MO, for the following reasons.

1) Mike is primarily a musician; Enya, although she plays all the instruments in her songs [but see below.... smile] is primarily a singer. The emphasis is on her voice, particularily in the multi-layered vocals that have, by now, become her trademark. Her longer instrumentals (4-minute-or-so pieces) also contain elements of this layering. Mike never did vocals in that way, except maybe on the Amarok choirs, that are very far apart in style from Enya's layerings.

2) Mike is a multi-instrumentalist, Enya only plays keyboards. Sure, she is a very gifted keyboardist, but often all the sounds in her records (as in TMOT) are made with keyboards and nothing else.

3) Enya has never performed live, because she can't, or at least she says so. smile Mike obviously does.

4) Ever since her beginning, Enya has always been catalogued as a New Age artist, and IMHO she is. Although that sort of cataloguing has sometimes been also applied to Mike's music, I think he has absolutely nothing to do with the New Age genre.

Excuse me if I posted this fully disagreeing message, Pikalcazar. I'd like to hear your opinion about why you think that Enya is the female version of MO.

P.S. What I'd like the most is seeing the two of 'em producing something together, but I'm afraid that their own distinctive styles are too different to be coupled... smile

No, Ugo, your opinion counts smile I'm not disliked for that, don't worry.

I like Enya because she doesn't make "hard" or "metal" music, so I can use it for relax and things like that.

Enya is lovely. I don´t know if she´s the female version of Mike, but of course if I had to choose anyone it would be her or Loreena McKennitt.

The magic and sensibility of her music, primarily on 'Shepherd Moons' themes 'Caribbean Blue', 'Lothlòrien' or 'Book Of Days', and on 'Watermark's 'Watermark', 'On Your Shore' and 'River' recalls me at the first time of Mike's 80's approaches to Celtic music.

Pickal, you're right, companierou!!! wink

I used to be an Enya fan too, but it's not true anymore. What I dislike in Enya, it's that she kept the same style since her beginning... Too bad, because her songs are really great, but too much is too much...

Hi,
I love Enya too,she makes some very peaceful, and relaxing music, but first,i must correct Ugo,Enya has indeed played live, for a start you toured or 2 years all over Europe with her family group Clannad, but it is true she has never really done a full scale tour as Mike, like say the Then and Now Tour 99,however,she explains the reasons behind this in her new D.V.D. which i got yesterday, basically the reason,is because of what has already been mentioned about about her multy layered vocals, which she does all herself,no samples,so,she would need a big choir, and she said maybe a good size orchestra aswell to pull it off,but i think she is going to be on tour very soon, she seems very desperate to get out and perform,IMHO,she has the most beautiful voice i have ever heard, and if she does tour,i for one will be there.
As for her being the female Mike Oldfield,i have to agree with above,as saying i don't think it's fair to call her that, there are obvious similarities between them, and i think they should do somthing together, because i feel they really compliment each other, and instrumental/songs,duet album would be very nice, just imagine,Mike playing beautiful guitar alongside Enya playing beautiful piano, wow, sounds like a match made in heaven, and it is strange that that was not suggested before seeing as they were both on the same record label!!.

Enya sang live at the Oscars, so perhaps she will commit to live performances in the future...anyway, I did love Enya but her new album does not move into anywhere new...it is nothing compared to the beauty of The Memory of Trees...but I agree that her best work is distinctive and captures that same deep emotion captured by Mike in anything he does...her music is perhaps the most beautiful ever made, certainly the most relaxing...i have a feeling that many fans of Oldfield would appreciate Enya as being an Oldfield fan automatically proves good taste wink...I would recommend either Shepher Moons or The Memory Of Trees for a new fan, but of course the best of - Paint The Sky With Stars - is an excellent introduction for the uninitiated...

Enya is great! Beautiful layers of vocals, her words are upbeat and positive, the backings are enjoyable too  :)

I wouldn't say that she is the female version of MO, but if the female version would have a better voice but lower ability of playing instruments then sure  ;)  I guess women are from venus, and men are from mars, so that idea could work  :)

I should get some of the albums, so far I just have 'Paint the sky with stars' do they flow, the tracks?

Ooh, which brings me to. 'Orinocco flow' the unlikely hit of the 80s! Most people know Enya just for this, I guess this could be her Tubular bells  :D

Is Enya any better than Mike on the piano front, really?

A duet would be great, and it would get Mike in the spotlight! hehe, Enya seems to have kept her fame..... relatively well...  :)

I think Mike plays piano a little better than her. ;) I guess she couldn't really play the TB theme...

True! Just that someone said that she was a gifted keyboard player, which she is, just not so much as Mr Oldfield it would seem  ;)

They should make a single! along the lines of Blackbird, with words, and a ripping guitar solo  :D

For me personally, the closest thing I could think of to a female version of Mike would be Kate Bush rather than Enya. Why? I'm not entirely sure I'm afraid, but when I finally got to hear her albums Hounds of Love and The Dreaming, some things sounded strangely familiar to me. Enya just isn't weird enough to be the female Mike IMHO. (Edit: Well, what little I've heard of her stuff. I guess I can't really judge here.)

Enya makes some beutifull songs and instrumentals, so they are similar there. They both play the piano/keyboard, so they are similar there. But they big difference is Enya is a far far far better singer than Mike will ever be, and Mike is a far far far better guitar player than Enya will ever be.Plus Mike plays lots more instruments than she does.
Also, if you go onto her website, you can see her recording studio, and it is amazing, really nice.

I WANT TO LIVE THERE!!!  :D   ;)

Anyone know of a woman that plays as many instruments as Mike? There may be a few, but I don't know of any famous ones  :/

A collaboration between Enya and Mike would be great, his more relaxed style of recent years would suit her voice  :)

Yeah, great idea!
Not something as obvious as Orinoco Bells, but I like very much her song Anywhere Is, but it is a little bit much of the same, so an Oldfield guitar solo would be all that the song needed. It seems a bit like Enya sang on Resolution!!  :)
A computerised Enya, but still...
btw; her lyrics are cool

I don't think so I mean Enya whines more than sings. I just don't think there's any comparison between them. Mike Oldfield can play in a variety of styles of music including electronica. If it wasn't for him there might not even be new age music.
