Stumbled upon a Michael Gordon Oldfield's facebook profile that doesn't seem fake. His "friends" are his 5 kids. http://www.facebook.com/friends.php?id=645930567

Interesting, I can't see myself adding any of them as a friend, I am sure they will be getting that a lot from folks about here... And I if was to meet them, I'd rather it not be because of their dad.

I wonder what his picture means!

No, I don't think its fake at all.. It would for a start be full of information, not just a blank profile.. Plus, it says "Michael Gordon Oldfield" as opposed to "Mike Oldfield" AND the only contacts are his kids. who, In turn would have to have added thier father knowingly.

Seems real to me - otherwise all six accounts would have to be fake! Michael's avatar is taken from the symbols on the tombstone by the lake in the forest section of Tres Lunas 3D computer game and is symbolic of Mike Oldfield's name (I remember reading this somewhere).

MySpace and Facebook are totally different sites.  The whole point of Facebook is to put your real name and photo up and show who you are.  That doesn't mean there are no "fake" profiles but I'd say there are far fewer than on MySpace - especially as MySpace has fan pages.

I use my real name and photo on Facebook and I only add people who I know, either online or offline.  Many people seem to "collect" friends on MySpace.  I wouldn't do that on Facebook.

The very same stuff applied on the early days of Orkut, which is a big hit here in Brazil, you could show who you really are since you needed to register after you've got an invitation from somebody who has joined Orkut previously,by this very same process.

Nowadays, everybody can join Orkut like Facebook, without the invitation, and there are lot of profiles which are used for people to promote parties, sell stuff and other useless things. And I had to take my real name off to protect myself from third party people.

The mess in my mind is,since Mike is a very private person, why he would expose himself this way? Maybe he has his Facebook page to have a certain contact with his older kids,it can be.I've heard that he registers in motocycle forums, but there he can be just one member, not the "famous member of it".

I don't think he's really exposing anything.  All we can see is that he is on Facebook and who his friends are.  We can't see his profile without being on his friends list.

Then again, the "send message" link seems to work.  I didn't send him anything though!

Maybe it will drive a few people to Tubular.net.

I'm not very familiar with 'facebook', Olivier, but your page seems very clean and attractive. Well done.

Unlike their competitor MySpace they don't let people do ugly pages, you just fill in the blanks on facebook, so they keep their clean design, and you can be creative on the content, but not on the appearance. I'll ask the members there if they knew about tubular.net, it would be interesting to know.

I see. That's one thing that bugs me about MySpace - there are some lovely ones, such as Ebony's, but I've encountered so many that were painful to the eyes.

I use my real name and photo on Facebook and I only add people who I know, either online or offline.  Many people seem to "collect" friends on MySpace.  I wouldn't do that on Facebook.

I haven't quite got into Facebook, the thing that gets me with Facebook is I have to log in or create an account to view pages.  I do find with profile sites I seem to be invited to join so many, I've accounts with Bebo, Frappr and MySpace, but the only one I seem to use regularly is MySpace.  I can't remember my passwords to Bebo or Frappr, as my  wonderful boyfriend :)  :D  bought me a new computer, and if my passwords are stored anywhere it's on my old PC.   I've also The Making Of Ommadawn film on my old PC and I'm wondering if there's a way of transferring it to my new PC.

I know with MySpace, and other sites impersonation of famous people is commonplace, I know Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon from Queen, also Paul Stanley from Kiss had such problems.
http://www.brianmay.com/brian/brianssb/brianssb.html
Yes I do agree with Brian about impersonation on there,  i think it needs to be made clear if it's an official page or not.  I do agree with him about the risks to kids on these profile sites, and that sexual predators/paedophiles can lurk on there pretending to be someone they're not.  That said I've many good friendships that started off online, I've found the Love of My Life online too.  I think if it comes to kids /teenagers using the net and anyone  meeting up with  cyberfriends in real life , then obviously it makes  sense  to take a few precautions, let a friend know wheree you're going , and what time you expect to be back, and take a mobile phone with you should you get into difficulty.

I've two profiles on Myspace, but I mainly use my Poppy profile (set to private, so I'll need to add you as a friend to see it).
http://www.myspace.com/poppydanderfluff due to having problems from some sad pathetic woman who was jealous of a friendship on there, but I refuse to have some jealous bitch tell me who I can and can't talk to online. I don't know why some people have to be so sad, perhaps it's because they don't have a life of their own they have to interfere in someone elses.

Feel free to add me as a friend on Myspace if you so wish.

We actually got an email quite recently that seemed to indicate that all of the myspace profiles for Mike are fake (from what I'd consider a reliable source)...either that or his record company doesn't know who's running his official profile, which isn't entirely impossible...

I don't have any information on the facebook profile, though.

I do sometimes have fun playing around with profile sites, but I don't usually stick with them. My current project is my imeem page. I don't think you need an account to view profiles, but you'll only be able to hear 30-second music clips. With a (free) account, you can listen to streamed full tracks (except for the occasional content that isn't cleared for full-play), as well as upload mp3s. There's also video and image uploading as well as a blog feature.
