I was just wondering who we know are celebrity Mike fans. This should include other artists who we know have name checked his influence in some way.

I'll start with who I think I'm either certain or fairly certain of namechecking him.

The Orb
Orbital
Massive Attack
The Chemical Brothers
The Beta Band
Enigma
David Badiel - UK comedian, has made a few references to Mike in one of his shows. Turned up at TSODE launch party.

Anyone else?

Medwyn Goodall has stated Mike Oldfield as his biggest influence several times (next to Dire Straits and Vangelis). It was Tubular Bells that led him to become a multi-instrumentalist himself. For those who do not know him, Medwyn Goodall is a big name in new age music.

Jacques Villeneuve (probably spelt that wrong), the Formula One racing driver, is a big fan of Mike's and was at the Waterfront launch of Tubular Bells III back in 1998 if my memory serves correctly.

Yup thats true, I think I remember reading they met skiing in Switzerland. Yeah I'd forgoten about him.

One other person I'm keen to trace the linkage is the artist Damien Hirst. He was at one point aparantly doing the cover of TB3. The Amarok mailing list site, on it's TB3 bio, has him down as having done the cover but this isn't true. I distinctly remember hearing via Darkstar at the time of the album launch that 'the cover was no longer by Damien Hirst'. I'd love to know what connection there was, for some reason they srike me as rather unlikely companions, but who knows?

The Damien Hirst? The guy who makes art out of dead bodies? He seems quite an unusual artist for Mike to work with... (BTW, that maked the third Oldfield/Bowie connection).

I suppose you could put vocalists John Anderson and Maddy Prior in this list, along with all the other's who have appeared on Mike's albums. Also, I remember that Mike did a pub gig or something with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. I suppose that makes him a fan.

To Sysiyo. Yeah thee Damien Hirst. As I said there was definately some sort of connection around the TB3 cover, the Amarok site TB3 bio page has them down as being friends but I've never come across any evidence for this in interviews etc and I was wondering whether anybody else had.

The connection with David Gilmour was via Tom Newman who was and probably still is a mutual friend of both.

For future reference we'll take Mike's collaborations with other artists as being read for this list. My idea behind starting this topic was to kind of back up the many discussions we have here about Mike's influence on other artists, but we can have fun by throwing in other celebrities we know have name checked him as well.

And of course folks the big, big, big name we have to add to the list is of course Arthur C Clarke

As far as I remember, the event in the pub with Mike and David Gilmour ended in a less than amicable guitar showdown...they may not be such great fans of each other now ;)

If I may add : Richie Blackmore, who's current project Blackmores Night very much reminds of Mike's music around the early 80s (especialy Moonlight Shadow).

Being asked about he replied that he likes the way Mike picks the strings of his electric guitars with his nails and said he would recognise his style anytime.

And also didn't Richie Blackmore cover To France at some point? I think he also said something about liking Mike's stuff around the Crises/Discovery era. Yup We've got to add him to the list.

Producer Frank Peterson (Enigma,Sarah Brightman) and Sarah Brightman. Their "Siren" on the "Dive" album is actually the TB11 theme. Curiously, Mike isn't credited as the song writer.

Don't know about Gilmour, but Roger Waters was a fan.
Hall and Oates would qualify, as well as Annie Haslam from Rennaisance.
I am sure the list is rather large.

Anne Nightingale - she has interviewed Mike and worked on a book about him - which hasn't come out.

TONY BLAIR

is a fan of Mike's. He was originally going to introduce the TB3 1998 concert but there were some bombings or something serious happened and he wasn't able to be there.

Didn't know that about Tony Blair, thats quite funny. Roger Waters is interesting aswell, didn't know about that either.

I'm not so sure about Porridge and Oates though, Just because they covered Family Man doesn't mean they are huge fans. Covers like that are quite often thought up by producers and I'm pretty sure Porridge and Oates didn't write a lot of their own material in general, but who knows?

I'd also forgotten about Annie Nightingale. I'd love for that book to come out for the 30th aniversary.

Its becoming an interesting list though chaps.

I'd just thought about the french writer Bernard Werber...
I don't know if he is famous elsewhere than in french spoken countries... he wrote 'les fourmis' series ("Empire Of The Ants" in English) and he said at the end of the books that he was listening to Mike for inspiration during the writing...

Thats interesting. I also just remembered that many years ago I read something about Mike in which it was stated that John Lennon was a big fan of Tubular Bells.

On the subject of John Cleese, we could easily add Alan Rickman and Billy Connoly in here as well for doing the same job. I'm fairly certain Mike would have met Connoly when he was living in LA but it would beinteresting to know for sure the connection.
