Legendary Artists Gather To Celebrate 50 Years of the Strat

The event, which is in aid of Nordoff-Robins Music Therapy, will take place at Wembley Arena on 24th September 2004 and will feature a mix of legends and contemporary artists.

The stars are to gather to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of one of rocks greatest icons the Fender Stratocaster. The show will be sponsored by Miller Genuine Draft have confirmed so far Stratocaster playing heroes including David Gilmour (Pink Floyd),Joe Walsh (The Eagles), Hank Marvin (The Shadows), Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music), Paul Rodgers (Free/ Bad Co.), Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Mike Rutherford/Paul Carrick (Mike & the Mechanics) and Gary Moore.

They will join forces to pay homage to the world's favourite guitar. The legends will be joined on the night by Amy Winehouse and Jamie Cullum in a triumphant combination of vintage and contemporary artists.

It has been confirmed that David Gilmour will be playing his serial-numbered 001 Stratocaster on the night, the very first of its kind made by Leo Fender in July 1954. Spanning five decades of guitar music and with more artists to be confirmed the MILLER STRAT PACK line-up is already a collaboration of the biggest names history has to offer.

Martin Brady, MD Fender Europe Ltd said: "this is an historic occasion for Fender and the Stratocaster guitar. Never before have so many legendary names come together on one stage to celebrate an icon in rock music and Fender are delighted to have Miller Genuine Draft's support. Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy is a charity that is close to our hearts and the work they carry out is inspirational. We are incredibly excited about the possibility of helping such a worthy cause through funds raised by the concert".

"Monies raised from this wonderful concert will help fund our outreach programmes across the UK, making Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy even more available. We are delighted that Fender are supporting Nordoff Robbins," commented Audrey Hoare, Director of Fundraising.

First unveiled in the early fifties, the Fender Stratocaster rapidly rose to iconic status through boundary-pushing artists such as David Gilmour with Pink Floyd, Joe Walsh for his distinctive country-rock riffage and, probably the most famous Strat player of all time Jimi Hendrix. Following a stratospheric performance at the Monterey festival in June 1967, Jimi successfully positioned the Fender as one of the most iconic guitars ever when he was photographed on his knees, as his Strat burnt on the stage in front of him.

Tickets will go on sale at 9am on Saturday 19th June 2004.

Look out for a great opportunity to win tickets and a host of other exciting prizes coming soon on soundgenerator.com

So good ole Gilmour will have another fair chance to play one of his 9-hour-long guitar solos, then?

I don't think David Gilmour does that really!!!.his solo's don't go on that long, except Comfortably Numb Live, but his solo's are great solo's,not shredding crap with no meaning,he is one of the greatest soloist ever,at both constructing and playing them.

They're not. Gary Moore is a Les Paul-guy, his most famous one being an "unburst" 1959 (?) he bought from Peter Green. It's notable for having the pickups wired out of phase, creating a thin, strangled sound on the both on-position. But he has used a red Strat live on several occasions.

And Johnny Marr of The Smiths is widely associated with the Rickenbacker 330. But he used various Strats in the studio, and I think he regarded the Strat his main guitar in The The and Electronica and in that band he plays in now. (Can't remember the name.)

Sometimes they do scrape the barrel a bit - one of the artists at their 50th Anniversary concert (that is, the 50th Anniversary of Fender) was Jack Bruce, who was famous for playing a Gibson bass and now plays a Warwick...

Their copy about David Gilmour's Strat is a bit misleading as well - it was the first of its kind in that it was the first white Strat with anodised pickguard, but it's generally reckoned that it was made a few months after production had started, so it's not the first Strat.

Anyway, could be a decent night, doubt I'll go though.

What about Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton? They've been playing strats for a while, and they're really famous for it. Surely they'd be better then 'scraping the barrel'. If they really want something mad they could get Yngwie Malmsteen! That'll wake up the party a bit!

Strangely, I can't find any mention of this whole event on the Fender website.

David Gilmour's Strat,is not as Korgie says the first ever,it's just the first with a number,ie 001,they were made without number's before that, but it's still cool for him to own a Strat with 001 on it.

They did say there are other artists to annouce,so,Clapton and Beck could still be added.

They had Malmsteen at the 50th anniversary concert actually. I'm not sure he's terribly fashionable at the moment though...

These days there's a lot of choice of 'Fender' players of course, considering they own Guild, Gretsch and Jackson/Charvel as well.

I have a feeling that the earlier Strats did have serial numbers, just not starting from 001. I'd have to dig out the books to be sure of that though.
Whatever the facts behind it, 001 was clearly intended as a special item, and very interesting it is too.

Not sure what it's like in Britain (or actually I'm quite sure it's different there) but seeing how they even play Manowar ( ! ) on German TV quite regularly at the moment, it seems this kind of thing has slowly but surely become acceptable again... I'm pretty sure this has to do with the rise of the different varieties of "gothic metal" bands, be it HIM, Nightwish, Within Temptation or Evanescence. The latest thing seems to be Xandria, and from the one song I heard of them I'd say the genre has long passed its peak by now... though who knows. People used to think that techno would disappear after a few years  :D

Oh, God forbid. Goth Metal? Bleh, just bleh. I can't differentiate "Goth Metal" from any other "Metal" slush going on. If I want anything "Goth", I'll stick to The Cure, thank you very much.

Anyway, I hope nobody has taken offense at my jab at David Gilmour. Pink Floyd is easily one of my favourite bands ever, but I just don't like what the man has done after Roger Waters quit. He thinks he can please the crowds just with his guitar playing, and I really don't like that.
