Or bringing Oldfield to the masses!

Silly I know maybe im the only one trying to educate the world  :D or maybe others like myself are trying to get friends family members members of the general public into Oldfield.

Its never to late to become a Mike Fan  :D  :D  :D

Anyway as mentioned in another thread I am a manager in a retail store.  We get several hundred customers a day and we have a 5 disc cd player.

Well I let the staff bring in their own music (within reason NO SWEARING! lol) and I of course do the same.  So last month Ive been trying oldfield on the masses.  Just today I had 3 of mikes albums in the cd player (with linkin park and aerosmith inbetween).  Todays choices were Tres Lunas , Platinum and Earth Moving (I like the album but most people who hear it see it as cheesy 80s over pretencious tunes).  Only real reaction I get is when I put Crises on, every single time you see at least 1 person merrily singing along to Moonlight Shadow.  Why is that the only Mike song the masses know lol

And if you think this is a pointless thread you may be right Im in a silly Mood  :p

Hey, you should try Ommadawn / Crises / Discovery, I think that might get a good effect. Earth Moving isn't a good album to introduce people to Mike Oldfield, and I'm not too sure on Tr3s Lunas, either... But, oh well, at least you got Moonlight Shadow playing. I once heard that song in the PA system of a small department store near my house. They leave it on the Easy Listening station (yuck), and, guess what, Moonlight Shadow begins. I guess I was the only one there who could sing along to all the lyrics. :D

Yeah, a safe album such as Crises or Discovery would be good to play, Discovery being a personal favourite of mine. Prehaps an instrumental album such as TSODE would be good to play. I dare you to play Amarok!!

Yeah..Crises, Discovery, TSODE and Amarok contains
music with quality ;) Good examples..

Amarok is a very good choice to introduce Mike's
music to the ones who never heard his music
It's lots of different moods all over the
track, you always can find your favourite part. But for me,
the whole track is my favourite part  ;)

Are you sure? :) There are indeed lots of different moods but people who don't know Mike's music presumably aren't used to that much variety. :) So IMHO it's like trying to teach somebody who fears from water swim by throwing him into deep end. When I first heard Amarok, it didn't have a good effect on me immidiately (I wasn't that much fan then).

I'd rather advise Voyager for a starting point: it's an album that most people could like. It was also the first Oldfield album that I loved.

Well about 2 weeks ago I 'came out' and admitted to all my pals that I was rediscovering Mike's music.  I have been met with scorn, pity, hilarity and incredulity.  To every one of them I have said "come round to mine and just listen to Ommadawn side one and if you still think he's shit, fair enough".  Not one of them has taken me up on it, but Ommadawn part one is what I'd play to try and turn someone onto Mike.

Yep, Ommadawn is possibly his most "accessible" album, and at the same time, the one that best showcases the many facets of his music. Quite a good combination, that. I don't think many artists have an album just like that.

Amarok???????????? i have alays classed that as a hardcore mike fan album, not the sort of thing id play to a "newbie" straight away, i know every one has there own tastes, but i would try TSODE, five miles out, and maybe discovery, for a varied mix, but amarok would be a bad move to introduce people to  :D

Actualy Amarok is the first album I play to anyone who I think may apricate Oldfield. I also know people who ONLY like Amarok and no other Mike album. Some people really engage with the mad energy in Amarok that simply isn't in any other  of Mike's compositions (so I've been told anyway). TB, Ommadawn and Amarok are the only albums I would dare play anybody really. For me the rest of Mike's back catalogue, though obviously good in varing degrees and certainly of great interest, either hasn't dated brilliantly or stinks of cheese to the un-initiated. TB, Ommadawn and Amarok tell you everything you need to know, are fantasticaly original and... well... are just genius.

Yes I do indeed get a fair amount of scorn, piss taking and general abuse for my slight pre-occupation with all things Oldfield. Does it bother me? Not in the slightest, it's their loss.

I'll play people stuff I think they might be interested in, and sometimes that has been Amarok. I don't know if any have bought it as a result, but some have found it interesting. I'll play people anything I think they might like though, not just of Mike's. Sometimes it'll be things which illustrate a point (if I'm talking over, say, music production ideas with someone), in which case it's not unlikely I'll pull one of Mike's albums out, as I'm obviously quite familiar with the content of them!
I don't try and 'convert' people, though, but I'm of course happy to play and talk about Mike's music if someone's interested. I might do a slightly more hard sell if the artist is a friend of mine who I think could do with some extra sales, but that's not the case with Mike!

I had as part of my "Personal development plan" ( a way to keep Human Resources department in work) the task of improving my presentation skills. So I chose to do a 10 minute presentation to my fellow managers on the life and works of Mr Michael G Oldfield.

The history was easy, the highs and lows, but what music to play? I settled for the obvious, Tubular Bells intro, a bit of MS then let TSODE play quietly in the background for the rest of the powerpoint stuff.

No-one complained, so I think it went well. And no-one sniggered either.

I would certainly play Amarok to someone who's already experienced with rock music and/or music in general. Heck, I was introduced to Captain Beefheart with "Trout Mask Replica", in one bang, and I loved it (and still do). To someone whose musical tastes are still being shaped, I like to play some milder stuff, first, to see the reaction. Normally "Crises". Of course, when I want to freak someone out, guess what's album is in the player? :D

Well I actually started by playing Amarok!  One staff member with eclectic tastes liked it so much he went and found a copy in HMW (UK record store US chums).

To be honest your right about Earth Moving its driving them crazy with its incidious overblown 80s beats.

Ill give it a break for a couple of weeks then slip Crises into the cd player :)

I would suggest 'Discovery' also.  However You could also compile some of the vocal tracks - 'Man in the Rain' - 'Northpoint' - 'Foreign Affair' - 'To be Free' - 'Pictures in the Dark' etc.

It really depends on who you're playing it to.  More musical chums may appreciate the likes of Ommadawn or Amarok, but if they're more into straight pop, then who can resist the charms of Moonlight Shadow (especially the long version), or To France, or Crime of Passion?

Alternatively, some of the 70s singles tracks are ideal for people who'd appreciate Mike's instrumentals but wouldn't have the attention span to 'get' his major works initially.  In Dulci Jubilo, Argiers, Portsmouth, Pipe Tune and Cuckoo Song should go down well.

Or if they are a child, or a child at heart, just play them On Horseback!

:)

I have my work cut out with a black/gothic metal fan. :) What would you advise in this case? He appreciates tunes but only the more consequent, simple ones. As a metal fan he surely prefers heavy guitar sounds.

I showed him Ommadawn Part One from the Knebworth video and he was struck all of a heap while watching how Mike plays the guitar. :) However, he said that it's something like jazz: technically perfect but without caring about the tunes, he doesn't see the leitmotiv in the music. Another thing he said is "this isn't about music, it's about atmosphere".

What is the "drug" in this case? Or is he totally hopeless to become an Oldfield fan? :)

Give up. If he's going to get into Mike Oldfield, he'll have to do it by himself. His view on music is radically different from yours.

But if you're willing to try, play him Bob Marley to show him really when music is all about atmosphere and not about tunes. ;) Even if that's not true...

Plenty of heavy metal fans seem to have a soft spot for Pink Floyd, so it's really not that much of a leap to Oldfield from there.  But, frankly, EeToN, would he be able to turn you onto any of his favourite records?  Sometimes it's a case of "never the twain shall meet".

He tried. :) There were some quite good songs from Nightwish but I think Slipknot is horrible... Interesting though that he liked the songs I made (maybe with some Oldfield inspiration). :)

P.S. Anyway, unfortunately I don't like Pink Floyd. :)

My friends have one thing in common with me, they are teenagers. They may gang up on my musical preferences and called Oldfield's works 'gramps music' etc but I have converted several people, my girlfriend for example!  :D
