I will be driving down to South Wales in the next few days and thought it would be nice to go and have a look at where Mike recorded Ommadawn and Hergest. Has anyone been around the area, if so, is it easy to get to. I don't want to intrude on the owners of the Beacon but it would be nice to at least see where it is.

You need to head for Bradnor Hill Golf Course. The Beacon is just below the golf course car park. Take first left off the B4355 Kington to Presteign road, up Barton Lane to Bradnor Hill. The Beacon is the black a white building near the top with its own driveway and car park.

The road is very, very narrow. My strategy was to get up it as fast as I could, before anyone was coming down the hill (though there are a few pull-offs). Of course, that didn't exactly work and I had to back down a little bit and pull over. The style looks a bit Tudor-ish.

Isn't that bay window on the second floor the window of his then studio ? Looks like it from the video of the making of Ommadawn.

No, the studio was on the ground floor. However, you can see the bay window in the "Making of Ommadawn" video where Mike stands near the kettle drums. The recordings happened below this.

Got there ;-) Surprisingly humble little abode and not as far in the sticks as I thought. It was weird thinking Ommadawn was recorded in there.

Was the group shot for Ommadawn taken around the back garden of the Beacon ?

Nice photo, mate. The house doesn't seem to be too different from the previous picture someone put up. On the assumption that you took your recently, any idea when the other one was taken?

Also, don't the new owners get a bit miffed when Oldfield fans turn up in their droves taking photographs?

No, that was "around the back" of The Manor when the Jabula drummers were recorded.

My picture was taken around 3 June 2005, early evening, when my daughters and I were staying at the Beacon. One of them and I decided to do a bit of hiking on the trail. I can't remember if I took the picture or if she snapped it--the kids used my camera more than I did. Heh--thinking back....there was lots of sheep dung--we didn't get very far--so I ended up going for a run on the road going past the golf course instead. Gorgeous, gorgeous country. It was chilly and cloudy that evening, and the sunset was beautiful.

The changes seem to be to the exterior of the lower level. Looks like you had a brighter day, Ian!

I don't know if the new owners get miffed--that it had once been Mike Oldfield's was known to them prior to purchase. There have been pictures of it floating around on the web over the years, and I posted a pic rather than a link in the interest of time.

Funny, but guess I have become so immersed in Tudor, Britain these past couple of years that when I see pictures of the Beacon, the first thought that jumps into my head isn't "Mike Oldfield's studio" but rather "Oh--Tudor-style!" Oh my.

A very nice location! no wonder mike felt inspired and created ommadawn! far away from the madding crowds, sweet seclusion, he still cherishes his privacy, it agrees with him, not a social butterfly down to earth, family values, deb

I still think he was mad to leave the Slad. Now that was a nice building.

Yes, it was very very humid and I had terrible hey fever that day. I didn't really make it obvious when I was taking pics as I was also interested in the landscape. I wanted some good ones of the unusual sheep for my stock images but I couldn't get too close. I would have liked to have seen Penrhos Court but didn't have the time.

When we initially reached Kington, I got a bit misplaced, missed the turn on to the road from which you make a left onto the road with the Beacon and golf course (lotta sense that makes, I'm sure--don't have the atlas with me), and ended up having to turn around at Penrhos. That wasn't anything compared to getting "misplaced" on the way to the literary festival at "Hay-on-Wye," though the area is so breathtakingly gorgeous that the kids thanked me for getting lost. Of course, they were the ones navigating, so hmmm.......
