Everyone on tubular.net --- Please spend 5 mins and go to the 10 Downing Steet website and sign my petition asking the UK government to acknowledge Mikes lifes work with an honour OBE / MBE etc?
Please sign it and then tell all your friends / neighbours / pets - anyone with an email address to sign as well. We need 1,000 signatures for the government to have to take it to the appraisal stage.
COME ON GUYS ----- LET'S GET MIKE RECOGNISED !!!
Dave

Once you sign you will receive an "authorisation" email which you must open and click the link to get your name up in lights on Mikes petition.

Nice idea, I've added my (virtual) pawprint.

How to we raise the money to pay to Tony though? Could all tubular.net members chip in say £10k?  ;)

I dont see the point in CBE's etc, I mean, in the words of my favourite comedian-

"CBE's, or OBEs make you commanders of officers of the british empire, but They might as well make him a commander of milton keynes, at least that exists..."
- Spike Milligan

but even at that, yeah he deserves some kind of recognition :)

Hi Matt - Thanks for your paw mark - we are off and running.

Hi Jonny - sorry you can't sign - you aren't out of time by the way - the deadline is Feb 1th 2008 !!
Maybe you can take Matt's advice and send you £10K (ster£) direct to Mr Blair??

Please everyone keep those signatures coming in --- get your friends, family, pets etc to sign or email the UK government in to doing the right thing..

Dave

For us non-Brits, I am assuming Tony is Tony Blair?  And if so, why would you send him money?

Now that's a good question!!!

As for the petition, I fully believe Mike deserves recognition of some sort, but would he actually like an OBE or CBE? I think you have to be careful about things like this, he might be over the moon and extremely pleased or it might be something he disagrees with.

To my mind he is very badly acknowledged by his own country. He is one of the best composers/musicians we have ever produced and the fact we hardly acknowledge this is rather shameful. He did once get the key to the city of London ( I think that's right) but what else, no awards or anything. But, thinking on, perhaps he doesn't like the limelight and all the publicity, & I couldn't blame him for that. To be Free....

:)

P.S A No BELL Piece prize for his next album, maybe? (Sorry that's too bad!;)

Guys - PLEASE send no money to Tony Blair - Matt and I were joking!! There is curently a big issue in the UK where Tony Blairs government are (allegedly) giving away honours for cash, but I doubt in our petition that would work! Forget the money!

I think we should all assume that as Mike accepted his "freeman of London" title then he would accept an honour such as a CBE or OBE with the same graciousness.

Bee is so right - this country has been very bad at acknowledging REAL talent such as Mike's hence I just want to try and do my bit and get someone in the ivory towers of Westminster to take notice.

Hopefully.....David  :p

Yeah, i wasnt too sure either, in fact I had this discussion with my dad, and we both agreed that we dont really know if mike would like one or not,  think he'd like to be asked and all, but probably wouldnt be too upset either way.

But we might as well get him the opportunity! so every brit out there get signing!

I guess that's what discredits the honours system if the government are/were (allegedly) giving honours in exchange for cash.
I think the honours system would be so much better if it was left for the citizens to decide.

Yes Mike is vastly underrated.

Cheers James, your support is appreciated. Still need plenty of signatures to get the petition noticed by the powers that be!
Come on all you UK Oldfield Fans, get signing and get your mates on there too.

One problem I have (and I think many others on this board have as well, partly why we are here I imagine!;) is that I don't know anyone else who likes Mikes Music, certainly not to the extent that I do. Word of mouth and getting pals to sign might work fine for anti car tax campaigns but is a bit more difficult for Mike.

Maybe if anyone is on other mailing lists or boards they could spread the word that way? Tubular.net is the only place I visit that has anyone who likes Mikes music.

I am working on my children (they all love Moonlight Shadow and my 8 year old is even starting to like Amarok!;) but they have a few years to go before they can sign petitions :)

Thanks for the note Matt - I think the main problem we have here is to get even those who are on the board to sign first - let alone their friends etc!
We are only up to 15 signatures so far....must be more UK fans using tubular.net, and this thread has been read enough to have a lot more on I would have thought?

Anyway we must keep trying and plugging away and we will get there.

Cheers NWM  :p

PS: I do note Caroline M has signed ----- thanks CM - xxx

hmm cbe's ,obe's ?

Thing is Mike Oldfield *IS* recognised and acknowledged for his great contribution to music already.......by the people who (i  hope) are important to him,and that is people like us...you,me and all the other squillions of fans around the world who have bought, and enjoyed his great music, and been to his concerts over the years.....
As already seen in this thread, there are a lot of fans out there who cant vote for Mike even if they wanted to,as they are not UK resident...Im sure Mike has got used to the lack of credit by the industry / country in general...I doubt if he is continuing to produce great music in the hope of getting recognition by people who most likely dont listen to his music anyway.....the important ones already do   :D

Love From Bleat

Just trying to do our bit to get the country to recognise our hero's achievements...so richly deserved.

Cheers...Dave

Hi Ratty, long time no see.

But wouldn't herding sheep over Hergest Ridge be more appropriate???  I doubt there's very few sheep if any in the vicinity of London Bridge :O.

BUt isn't our PM meant to be a Mike Oldfield fan anyway, so I don't see how he could refuse making Mike  a Sir. After all  Richard Branson is a Sir, and without Tubular Bells I doubt there'd be the Virgin Empire there is today.

Just signed petition, only the second girlie to do so.

BTW whilst on the subject of music has anyone seen my topic re new music licensing laws in General Discussion, soz not sure how to link to page.
