Every now and then , a certain track or part of a piece of Mike Oldfield's music becomes very relevant to my state of mind. I've been wondering about Guitars and some of the inspiration behind the 10 tracks. Although I don't think it is his very best album, it is good & I do listen to it quite a lot and I'd like to know what Cochise is all about. I have been unable to find out much about it. Any ideas? Or should I stop being so pedantic!!

You might like to have a look at this article where he talks through some of what's behind the tracks.

Cochise was a Native American chief - I'm not the Native American expert around here, but here are a few pages which should give you some useful info (I haven't checked its authenticity, but the stories seem to add up):

What a wonderful website this is! It's great to find out so much.

Listening to Cochise now, I hear more. Thanks!

What makes the music of Mike Oldfield unique is the fact that he draws his inspiration from all over the world.

Wonderful stuff!

INTERESTING FACT (okay, okay, "uninteresting bore"):

Mike Oldfield's "Cochise", according to Oldfield himself, is "loosely based in the first few bars of Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love" (meaning the chugga-chugga-chugga guitar rhythm, I guess - also draws the melody from Jewel In The Crown, but that's for later). Audioslave's "Cochise", song from 2003, is a huge rip-off of Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love!

Coincidence?

As a result of a question posed about "Lakme" in the L&S topics, I've been directed here.  I've often wondered who or what was Cochise, now I know  ;) .

Thanks Korgscrew for the links, very informative, cool stuff.  Reading about Mike's inspiration for the tracks on Guitars, I've played Guitars with a new insight   :) .  I don't know why this album isn't so popular amongst fans.

Just a thought about Out Of Mind, I've always heard a piece that wouldn't sound out of place on the Rolling Stones' Exile On Main Street, but sounds Stonesy with a MO twist.  I think if Mike were to jam with  Keith Richards or Ron Wood that would be interesting  .  That's a point seeing as Mick Taylor played on Tubular Bells for the "Second House" programme if there were any jamming sessions between Mike and Mick.
