Halloween is just around the corner and I was wondering if any members had a piece or pieces of music that they like that one could consider Spooky, or Halloween related.

My particular favs are,   The Halloween soundtrack, John Carpenter. obvious.....

Steven by Alice Cooper.

Dance Macabre by Camille Saint Saens.

Great thread...

:A Night on the Bare Mountain ~ Modest Mussorgsky(wonderfully chilling)

:In the Hall of the Mountain King ~ Greig ( not so much scary as unnerving, creating many images in my mind)

:Mars the Bringer of War ~ Holst (used to scare me silly as a child, still does)

:Dance of the Knights ~ Prokofiev ( This piece has such drama & is possibly my favouritest piece of classical music ever - but then I haven't heard Music of the Spheres yet!! )

:Mad World ~ Michael Andrews ( the loneliness I associate with this track scares me so much & yet I find it so beautiful)

Just remembered another,

Valse Triste ~ Sibelius ( always makes me think of dancing at midnight in graveyards lit only by the wintry moon , it's really beautiful )

It's nice to see Ruddigore mentioned - when I was in an amateur musical theatre group, we did quite a few G&S shows... :)

I'm loving the Pumpkin on the Tubular.net frontpage, too! :D

Rather spookily I was listening to an extract from that this very morning & thought the same!

Not familiar with the Kraftwerk piece, will have to seek it out.

It's on the The Man Machine album. Not sure everyone will find it spooky though. Maybe the album cover is generally spookier.

:p

About Valse Triste. It's composed for a play called Kuolema, which means death, so no wonder it reminds you of dancing at midnight in graveyards lit only by the wintry moon. Maybe you didn't know that?

These are, currently, my top musical scarers:

- John Williams' "Main Theme from Jaws".
- "Speak to me", from Pink Floyd's DSotM.
- "Love and Death and an American Guitar" (a.k.a. "Wasted Youth") by Jim Steinman. If you don't know this one, look out for it. :)
- "Metal Machine Music", end of Part IV, by Lou Reed.
- "Child in Time" by Deep Purple - believe it or not. :D
- "Into the Night", by Julee Cruise, from the Twin Peaks soundtrack.
- "The day before you came" by ABBA. Again, believe it or not - just listen to those chords under the "Aaaahhh" parts. :D
- "Mer Girl" by Madonna, from the album Ray of Light.
- "November Rain" by Guns 'n' Roses, especially the heavy ending part of the 9-minute-plus-long song.
- "Waiting for the Night" by Depeche Mode (in the original version - no other version beats it).
- "Extreme Ways" by Moby.
- "Pax Deorum" and the first half of "Cursum Perficio", both by Enya. Again, if you're not familiar with these, look out for them.

There are plenty more I could list, but for the moment I'll limit myself to these. Maybe I'll come up with more stuff in the next few days... ;)

@ tubularman: I'm not sure whether demonic music actually exists. There may be demonic-themed or satanic-themed songs or lyrics, but music per se is never really demonic.

Ah, I've got another: the video version of Michael Jackson's "Thriller", which I've ripped from the DVD [starting from MJ's spoken line "It's only a movie!" :)]. It's very different from the album version: it sticks all of the song's 3 verses together, one after another; it features a 'scary music' interlude (by Elmer Bernstein); and, most importantly, it delays the poppy, backing-vocals-laden, heavily-choreographed chorus till well after Vincent Price's spoken part. The video itself doesn't scare me at all - indeed, when I happen to see it, it often makes me laugh hysterically at how cheesy it is! :D - but the way the song is played in the video is, I think, quite scary when listened to on its own, without the images.

I haven't heard that one, but I've always thought "Showroom Dummies" (from Trans-Europe Express) was kinda creepy.

Another Halloween-ish album, for me, is Peepshow by Siouxsie & the Banshees.

It's so sad, but I don't think I know any scary music. Not really scary.

I know some horrifying music, like Cliff Richard's 'Congratulations', but that's not quite what everyone means, is it?

Love's "Forever Changes". It has a very creepy atmosphere even though it's quite upbeat and jolly.

I didn't know that at all, so that makes it even spookier for me. I guess it shows how powerful music can be.

& just looking through the list of suggestions makes me realise scary music can take many forms, not only classical, although often instrumental.

Another strange thing is, once I've heard a piece that is scary, I find I feel better...confronting deep fears maybe? I think it does you good, so I wouldn't worry about listening to dark music Tubularman, if I were you!
