I put this together over a year ago on Magix Samplitude using loops but I always thought it sounded a bit like Mike Oldfield.

Hope you like it.....

Quietman, this is superb - easily worthy of Mr O himself. Please tell me where I can get a copy of it; I don't want to have to rely on the site where it is a the moment. The soaring melody captures perfectly the idea of mountains (I love the title, by the way). You deserve to be hugely successful.

I would buy this now.

I was eager to post by the time I was half way through.

This is about as close as you can get to a Mike song without sounding at all like your trying too.

"Mike" take note,

All it needed (If anything) is a soaring lead Guitar and I say that only because I kept expecting One.

Superb  :)

Hi nightspore

Thanks for the great comments. I've made the track 'downloadable' on Soundcloud now, so you can get the mp3 file.

I live near Brecon, mid Wales, UK and the track is named after the Black Mountains which I can see. From a map the series of valleys actully resemble a hand, hence the name.

Have a listen to another track of mine if you wish called 'Pentre Ifan'. I think this could be even more of a Mike sounding track. Possibly would fit in on the Voyager album which I love. I will be posting that soon....

Hi milamber

Thanks for the comments. As I stated on Soundcloud I think it is a mixture of Mike Oldfield/Tangeream Dream with Phil Collins on drums!!

I don't play guitar just keyboards but if I did then a Mike solo would have been great in this piece.

Cheers

..

There's a black mountain in far north Queensland as well (on the road to Cooktown). It really is black, too. Here's a pic:

I've only commented on a scant few fan tracks on tubenet but yours just got my attention. I like it. It is reminding me of "Far Above the Clouds". 3 years ago I started clicking on the links generously provided by fellow tubes. A good portion of which led to youtube. On youtube, you get to surfin'....you know how it is. There was this really young guy who did multiple vids of himself in a cramped bedroom playing an SG along to MO music. At times his playing was identical to Mike. Try and find -that guy- and have him put his guitar onto your track. That would be awesome for both of you(and me!;). The only comment on your track I can suggest, cut and paste some of those drum fills/rolls they are fine. The basic drum loop is just a little too techno. Too many complain that TB3 was too techno(I think it had it's fine moments-The Inner Child etc), but if the Magix software you named is similar to Sony Acid this should be easy: go more for a QE2-like drum loop. More "prog".
BTW, can anyone confirm something since Phil Collins' name came up? I came across a short article on the web that stated he has some kind of neuromuscular disorder now and can't play drums? Something along the lines of "You don't want to be in the kitchen if I'm using a knife". What's up with the greatest drummer in rock history?
Continue with your work Quietman. Very well done.

Hi,

I listened to this a couple of days ago - I really like it. To my ears it's really well put together but could do with a little bit more variation over it's length...? Maybe....

It is, however, a marvellous track and one I'd buy it was available for paid download.

Cheers,
Terry.
PS: Now off to listen to your other music... :)

Hi Jimbo

(if I may call you that)...

I really apprciate your kind comments.... 'Hand Across The Mountains' was one of my first compostions in summer late year. Since then I have now finished over 20 tracks (all on Soundcloud). The first few were all looped based to get me started and this one just seem to flow with all the loops I put together. It also seemed to sound a bit like an MO track hence me posting (I have only been a member since the beginning of the week).

Adding loops I feel now is a bit like cheating but found it essential in my learning curve but is also a great way for anyone who wants to get started in music creation. I now use Sonar Producer 64 bit and I try to 'write/compose' my own material without any loops involved. I have a variety of excellent plug-ins now which include Absynth, Dimension Pro, Alchemy, Wusikstation, Golden Asset and Drumaxx to name a few. Don't get me wrong, I am proud of that piece as it was the first that really exited me and spurred me on.

On the track, yes it would be good to find that guitarist and let him let rip on this piece and add some 'realness' to it. I will have to have a look on Youtube. It would be good to 're-create' the piece in Sonar and maybe instead of the loops use some MIDI instruments for some realism. The loops came from a Magix loops DVD which I bought with Samplitude.

It's truly amazing as to get started all you need is a simple DAW (i.e. Samplitude) and a MIDI keyboard (in my case M-audio Oxygen8) which costs about £100 for both and away you go!

I havn't heard about Phil Collins and his disorder. I will have to have a look and see if this is correct.

Cheers
Martin

Hi Terry

Yes, you are right, it is a bit repetative and needed some variation but that was over a year ago now. I try not to be too repetative now and that track was 'looped' base with only one melody actually created in MIDI.

All my tracks now are MIDI based rather than loop based.

Cheers

I agree with Ginger Daddy about the repetition. And it could use some of that soaring guitar. But I Do like it as it is.  :)

I wouldn't tamper with this, Quietman. The loops and repetition capture just what it's like to climb mountains (another barrier to get over, another time to rest). I remember on one of my UK visits climbing Ben Nevis: at the base you think it's going to be child's play, but it's only about an hour later that you realise you haven't even seen the real mountain yet!

Thanks for drawing my attention to these, Wiga. I've just listened to "Illusions of Another Day", which I also enjoyed. There's something about it (perhaps the percussion) that reminds me of "Sunset", and the refrain melody reminds me of the eerie melody in the Maestro game when you approach a portal.

Hi

thanks for the comments on my music. My style is more or less ambient but then the occasional trance track comes out. So I genre hop!

Hope to be posting some new tracks soon.

Thanks again!

Any chance you could make "Cosmic Sorrow" downloadable? I like that one too. You could probably make a career writing music for films, incidentally.

I found out what happened to Phil. He will never play drums again because he put so much into it, he pounded his spine into oblivion. That's dedication, the mark of true passion for something. Hey, look at what happened to Roger Hodgson and his return.....perhaps....but doubtful. Whenever you watch a video of Phil "back in the day", think about what it cost him and appreciate it more. It truly is blood on the rooftops. Read about it here:

Hi All

I'm currently working on a new version of 'HATM' for the Tubular album. This was my first composition 18 months ago. It's going to hopefully sound less 'loopy' and a bit more mixed and produced on Sonar than its Samplitude original.

It will also have a little surprise in it for the MO fans!

Thanks for listening as always.

I'll keep the original version just in case...  :)

One thing I like about HATM is that for once the fade-out is entirely appropriate: you get the impression that the ascending goes on for ever until finally everything is out of sight, just as when you look up at a real mountain.
