Hello everyone, I just found a 3 cd collection called the Legendary Harry Nilsson on the 'Sale' counter at my local music store and felt compelled to buy it. I was too young to really remember Harry in his heyday but 'Without You' always sent chills down my spine, what an octave!

Knew nothing at all about Harry but after reading the album notes I can see he was a big influence on the music scene in his day. Born in 1941, he started out writing for other people, his first hit being the Monkees recording of 'Cuddly Toy'. He debuted his own voice in 1968 and his first Top 10 hit was 'Everybodys talking', funnilly enough not one of his own. This song featured in the movie 'Midnight Cowboy'. In 1969, Three Dog Night hit number 5 with Harrys 'One' which was a number one hit in Australia for John Farnham. It became Nilssons first million dollar selling composition. In 1972, he hit Harry Gold with 'Without You', a number one hit in the US, UK and Australia. His output started to decline after 1974 however and on Jan 15, 1994, at the age of 53 he suffered a major haeart attack and died. But his exceptional talent for writing and performing quintessential pop music lives on. Cheers.

Some of my favourites from this package include:

Everybody's Talkin
Me and My Arrow (Nilsson)
Coconut (Nilsson)(beautifully done by Kermit the frog)
Cuddly Toy (Nilsson)
Without You
I Guess the Lord must be in New York City (Nilsson)
Many Rivers to Cross
Nineteen Forty-One (Nilsson)
Mr Bojangles
One (Nilsson)
Jump into the Fire (Nilsson)
The Puppy Song (Nilsson)
Over the Rainbow
As Time Goes By

Golden voice, master songwriting craftsman, great sense of humour and a bit of a madcap. Quite simply, one of the greats.

Best album: Nillson Schmillson

Three cheers for Harry! Alot of singers are blessed with an amazing voice and Harry was one of the best. In my humble opinion few have captured the gift of humanity in all its forms to grace every note of every word of every song that he gave life to. From the absurd to the sublime and everything inbetween he always stayed true to himself for better or for worse. Everytime I hear a Nilsson song I get the impression that he's taking the listener into his confidence like an old friend. Mike Oldfields music has alot of the same qualities that harrys music pocesses. Although very different in style and form the honesty, humanity and yes insanity all shine through for the listener to connect with and see themselves in bringing all of us a little closer.

read some place that, Without you, is down as the song with the most tragedy linked to it.

Very emotive song thats for sure. I also really like 'All By Myself' by Eric Carmen if memory serves, and portrayed beautifully by Bridget Jones! Feel like playing them right now but it's early and my son is still in bed.

Any great songs on 'Nilsson Smilsson' I didn't mention above?

What I meant was that most people connected to this song either writers or performer's that have had a hit with it, have came upon some serious bad luck, usually involving death or mental illness.
