Does anyone else get the feeling that Mike has all but retired from making new music? He's living on a boat with his family and has said he has no plans to make any new music. If he has no studio on the boat it makes me wonder if that's it?I wouldn't really mind if he did as he's 56 now and has already given us a huge and varied body of work. Also MOTS would seem to be a very fitting farewell as it's orchestral and has hints and quotes to TB all the way through.
It has to happen some day but should we brace ourselves for no more new MO music?

Reading this recent quote provided by Matt from the Mojo article I would say no.Mike talks there about being inspired and also about suffering for your art etc.But I`ve never heard Mike yet give an emphatic "No,it`s never going to happen"..And even if he did,I doubt there would be many who would believe him given his own changeable moodswings and personality in general.I`m sure we all have our own general feelings about it but my initial reaction to reading that quote was "he`s already gearing himself up mentaly in anticipation to starting something"..Whether that`s due to happen in the near future or not I would`nt like to speculate. But I think Mike is probably aware that it will happen at some point..Has anybody got his cosmic email adress?     :p

He has to make another album for Mercury. He has signed for three albums, that is, Light and Shade, Music of the Sphere and the next one...

I also read that but took it as "if you say you can why don't you?".The Telegraph interview (i think)seems to point to nothing being in the pipeline saying,as it does, that no new music is being planned. There sems to be a well deserved winding down.He just seems to be looking back with the re-issues far more than he ever has and not talking about the future much which he always has.I hope he hasn't but i don't hold out much hope. Not that it matters much for someone who has given us all he has already.

As I said long ago, I think thats all she wrote. He wrote, ahemm....Just a feeling. I do hope I'm proven wrong. But I'm not counting on it myself. He's not got the drive of the Gilmours or the Hacketts. His priorities lie elsewhere. It happens......but, on the plus side, his body of work is much larger than.....lemme think of one......The Moody Blues. Even better, Steely Dan....or Renaissance. Got a letter from Annie Haslam. They are, at least her and Mike Dunford, planning a Rennaisance reunion. Not that their last effort was anything to write home about.

Well....he is retired now in his mind, but in xx weeks/months he is back on the horse.

MO is a train wreck of conflicting emotions and he has been down this road before - many times - being sick of music.
As all the emotions and feelings start to collide, he needs a vent - an outlet.
That outlet is making music..

Still not convinced but Eric Clapton announced his retirement a few years back and then comes back with the Cream re-union.We'll wait and see.For now i'll be happy to see what he does with the re-issues.For example what on earth will he do with Incantations?Always been one of my favourites.

Hahaha! You're probably safe for the next 66,666 posts. <-;

I'm currently in Niagara Falls, ON resting my feet atm (lots and lots of walking). It's been a great mini-holiday, even if I did have to work a shift on the virtual text reference desk today. I even had questions. While I was on the desk, the girls went to Ripley's Believe it or not (I guess from what they've indicated, they did) then they bought fudge. Someone at the fudge shop had a Tubular Bells ringtone and it wasn't me. Being proper daughters, they tried to find the person, but couldn't. That's their story anyway. /-: The Canadian customs agent asked us lots of questions on the way across the border, btw, and one of them was, "What does your license plate mean?"  (It's ORABIDOO.)  As I blithered on, I said to him, "Oh, I'm sorry to be blithering on about Mike Oldfield."  He said, "That's ok, I get paid by the hour, not by the car." :D He also asked me if I was pro-health coverage. I replied "Absolutely," and with that, he let us into Canada. Whew!

OH--Mike Oldfield?  He is on hiatus--not permanently retired. That was what was revealed to me in the mists of the Falls. Believe it or not. :D :D :D

[post edited to reflect "customs agent" not "customers agent"]  :O

Hiatus, eh? So we've got Mike Oldfield and Stereolab on hiatus, and me hoping it is only a hiatus.

66,666 huh? I hope I live to see that, as well as Mike O. They say the Niagra mist is cold, but the mist contains the hottest blood of all. Hence I'm working in my lab on a thing I call Viagra mist. You just spray it on. If it lasts more than 4 hours...better see your Dr.

"Hiatus", to me, is one of the most dreadful words when referred to musicians and bands. Pink Floyd went on "hiatus" after The Final Cut and they came back drastically changed - in every sense. Genesis went on "hiatus" after the horrible (IMHO) Calling All Stations album, and would have simply dissolved if Mr. Collins hadn't suddenly decided that he'd like to have a go at playing with his old buddies again. :) The Cranberries are currently on "hiatus", while Mrs. O'Riordan has already issued two very weak (IMHO) solo albums. So if Mike O. is really on "hiatus" I don't think we can expect new music from him for at least 7-8 years. But he never really said that he was going on "hiatus", did he? :)

Ha....and the wildest, most urgent.

Actually, the mist was incredibly cool and refreshing after a long, fast walk in the (relatively) hot sun. I love the way the mist rains down....and the wind....yum! The problem is that you never know when it's actually going to happen. You can watch the falls, think you see the build up, and then either nothing or oh my--you're drenched!

BTW, no more q's from the customs guy on the US side, but we had to go through a sobriety checkpoint this evening and one of the police asked about the license plate. I suspect everyone who sees it really wants to know. Customs and police just get an opportunity to ask. (-: Maybe I should just get a bumper stick explaining it.???

Re: hiatus.....No Ugo, I think his words were retirement, gone finishing, given it up, hates music, etc. :D We could just call it summer vacation, if that's any better. Oh yeah. Where he is, it's always summer vacation. :) No worries....he'll do what he does, when he does, if he does, how he does....and WHY he does <feels like I should be conjugating a verb here>.

Scatter, it's "Niagara". I'm sure there's no word that rhymes with "Niagra", and even if there were, I'm sure it wouldn't be a Freudian slip on your part!  :D

Well it had to fit better to rhyme with Viagra. Sometimes we poets of old must change words slightly to do the iambic pentameter thingy. I believe thats how "thingy" got invented. Lord Byron I think came up with "thingy".

Actually, though it's spelled "Niagara" -- and maybe it's my cloth ears -- but I've only ever heard it pronounced  "Ni-a-g'ra."  I used to be part of a group of astronomy clubs spanning both sides of the border (and Niagara was in its title), and I just can't remember hearing it pronounced any other way. ???
