As we all know theres tons of Tribute Bands out there.. Some Good others Not so...   With Mike Being pretty Well Known I wonder if any one Has got around to Having a Crack at forming a Band...    If so How would it do out there ??  I reckon sticking to the Shorter Songs with a good vocalist, Vocalists it would still do pretty well.  Obviously if the thing was called the "Official" Tribute Band it would stand a better chance ...    At least there would be some "Gigs" to go to then .. :)..

There's been a lot of covers......The California guitar trio has a cool version of TB1 on youtube and plays it on thier tours. Citay is band that claims to be influenced by MO particularly HR. I think just about anybody who ever learned how to use a sequencer with synths to try and be a one man rock band had MO in mind. But I've seen these young guys on youtube playing MO guitar riffs note-for-note perfecty. Some are incredible. I'd like to see one of them form a tribute band. I do have my own question tho.....I seem to remember one of MO's kids did some keyboard contributions on Light+Shade. Am I right? Wonder if his kid(s) will continue the folk/art/space rock tradition.

There was Duo Sonare a few years back who did a re-recording of the entireTubular Bells album. But as far as I know that was just a one off thing I think.Personaly I think a tribute band would do ok,although it`s not something I`m too into myself.Obviously they`d have to be way above average proficency to carry it off, particular in the guitar playing department. But yeah given a similar kind of premise to 3Wheeler`s here I think it could work really well. It`s a shame he didn`t have a few more familiar shorter pieces I guess, with the general public in mind. But then I wouldn`t have thought they`d be the kind of outfit you`d see turning up at The Crown & Anchor on a sunday evening. Some kind of organised anniversary type shindig though, say down in Hergest Ridge somewhere.Would be something I`d certainly consider going to myself I must admit.

Must be quite hard to be a MO tribute band. ABBA have a fairly contained distinct sound and style. Trying to go from TB to incantations to punkadiddle, moonlight shadow, TSODE, Bits of TBIII and then On my heart requires quite a range!!!! As 3Wheeler said maybe you'd have to restrict yourself to one style.

I'm sure i saw some footage on Youtube of some guys playing parts of Hergest Ridge acoustically in what looked like a pub.Very serious looking gents.
I really don't get the whole concept of tribute bands.Covers bands i understand having been in more thana few but with the proviso that you put your own stamp on any given song and that you can at least do the the song justice. The problem i have with tribute bands is that they slavishly learn stuff note for note and they then are left with no part of themselves to be heard.A MO tribute band would require really seriously proficient musicians to carry it off, especially as Scatterplot says, the guitarist. As we've all said Mike is an incredibly good and technically gifted (IMHO)guitarist. At least half of what he does i can't begin to figure out.So if the guitarists and other musicians in a proposed tribute are good enough to play his music how would they fare on other stuff, such as original music. That would be good to hear.

Oh Yeah Deff ,, You have a Point there.. The Best Tribute. Covers Bands Shouldnt play or even try to copy note for note..

Just a Fresh take on the Songs or tks is sort of more interesting...  sticking around crises,5miles out, discovery, earths moving,Islands, heavens open, and a few condensed longer pieces I reckon youd have a good show going there...

Well Mike always played condensed versions of his own work so why not.As far as i'm aware (QEH June 73 notwithstanding)he has never played TB all the way through note for note.
Besides as a musician i love Mike's music and i love to (try)to play along at home but it's so tightly structured there's no room to improvise.Again this kind of stifles your creativity,.

Sorry but I find the idea rather funny,   are you suggesting that one guitar player represents each finger?

Don't you mean tribute player?

Hadn't thought of that.A tribute band consisting of 4 or 5 Oldfield-a-likes.If they went the whole hog and even dressed the part it would be like the video for The William Tell Overture. And if they went into later stuff they'd have to employ a couple of percussionist to look like Mike Frye and Morris Pert.I know i've said it before but those 2 make me laugh on Montreux.

For the new people:

The best MO Tribute Band I heard was a CD made in 1997 (12 yeasr ago) by fans of the late "Amarok Mike Oldfield Mailing List" called "Lost in Static 18".
It was a collection of songs made by members of the list joined by Jörn Brackhagen.

The songs are fantastic and instead of trying to explain, please
follow the link and read the review:

http://www.speedysnail.com/twisted/static18.html

It was distributed by normal mail and FTP, since there was no peer-to-peer programs at that time. I was one of the "distributors" and still have the "master" CD.

I know there was a hungarian MO tribute band called "My Goldfield". They did a version of Mistake. That is so obscure! More information would be appreciated.
