Hello all!

On this site of Tony Palmer, it says that all the series of all you need is love is coming out on dvd! Have a look:

http://www.allyouneedislovedvd.com/

Mike Oldfield's episode, which is circulating on the internet in very bad quality, is on the last dvd (nr. 9, episode 17). Great isn't?!

I've just interviewed Tony for the next Dark Star magazine.

They are currently in the process of remastering from the archived transmission tapes held by ITV. Sadly, everything else appears to have been thrown away. However, it will be great to get Episode 17 in better quality.

Ah, good job Airborne! Looking forward to that! But what are those archived transmission tapes by ITV you are talking about?

YAY!!!! Should at last be able to get hold of a better quality "Making of Ommadawn" film   :D . I guess most of the series could be quite interesting,  there's some that doesn't interest me,  but the Blues, Rock n Roll, The Stones, Beatles , Led Zeppelin and of course Mike most definitely does  :D .
I did happen to find a copy of the accompanying book for £15 in Reading Collectors Centre, strangly enough located in Reading
, have seen this on e-bay with bidding reaching £85.
BTW for those of you who like real ale I can reccommend checking out The Hobgoblin pub in Broad St , Reading, don't be put off by the name it's NOT one of these fake plastic chain pubs, but is a real pub, it appears to be the only pub in the centre that doesn't need bouncers on the door, and it's also only a short stagger from the railway station if you happen to imbibe too much of the real ale.

Now all I need is a job so that I can go and buy myself the above mentioned DVDs along with other things on my shopping list, which by now must be longer than my arm  .

moonchildhippy: in that All you need is love book, is there a large piece about Mike? Does it contain photographs of Mike?

But what are those archived transmission tapes by ITV you are talking about?

The original UK transmission of the series was by LWT (London Weekend Television) and the tapes were 2" quadraplex format. These were subsequently copied to 1" C format tapes and then to D2 Digital. It is the D2 Digital copies that are being used for the DVD remastering of the series.
LWT has long gone and ITV (Granada) hold the D2 tapes in their library.

We are lucky that someone had the foresight to archive these programmes as EMI/Polyram are thought to have destroyed the celluloid in the early 1980's.

Argh, what a waste! I was afraid something like that happened. I can't understand and imagine people would do such a thing! It's important to archive! Fortunateley they made those copies, otherwise we would have never seen it in better quality.

Now we're at it: didn't Mike say he had the original footage of the Queen Elizabeth Hall TB performance from 1973?? I'm still hoping in seeing those one day! And of course The Essential on DVD!

Yes there's quite a bit about Mike in there, It also has a photo of Mike, the one of him pictured with the doves :D , as used on the Theme From Tubular Bells/Froggy 45 cover.

The book is interesting reading (well most of it), guess I just happened to be in the right place at the right time :).

Yes indeed so many great things lost possibly forever, many episodes of Doctor Who are missing.  So glad this series has been archived, and I can now get a decent copy of "the Making of Ommadawn" as my PC download seems to stop at 10.32.  I've  quite a few Laurel and Hardy videos, bought about 10-12 years ago, the quality given that these are 1930's recordings is amazing. The colourised vids look more like 1950s rather than 30s.
BTW the music in the Ommadawn film is different to that on the album, I wonder how much of the original Ommadawn survives intact.
Sorry gone slightly off topic there, what with Doctor Who and Laurel and Hardy.

The QEH 1973 performance of TB, yes please I'll second that I'd love to see this on DVD too. I guess there's time, given that next year is the 35th Anniversary of Tubular Bells, to find the footage, clean it up and transfer it onto DVD, jsut hoping the footage isn't lost after Mike's house move.
