Hello. I've slowly been getting into Mike Oldfield over the past year, and a few weeks ago I finally went nuts and bought the bulk of his CDs. Great stuff! But you knew that. What I'm here to ask about is the tubular bell image that spans the spine labels of the whole collection. Most of the CDs I've ended up getting are part of the Caroline HDCD series, and their spines are printed so that when lined up, you get a multicolored tubular bell.

I've already realised that Islands has the wrong artwork. However, I also seem to be missing one piece of the bell between Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn. Since the artwork seems to be assembled in chronologic order, and I'm not aware of there being any remasterd albums between Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn, I'm wondering what could go there. Anyone know?

Thanks!

Jeremy, a new Oldfield fanboy in training.

I'm not sure if Orchestral Tubular Bells is in that remastered series, but if it is then that would be the missing piece. However, knowing the amount of mistakes and the like which are on the remastered editions, I would not be surprised if this is just another slip-up. I saw a site with a huge list of these mistakes, but I can't remember where.

Wow! I'll be perfectly honest and say I'd never noticed - but then, I don't have them all!

I have a large chunk of eealy work to get at some point - so I think I'll give priority to the HDCD stuff!

13 albums so far.... over half the way there :)

Yes OTB is part of the HDCD remastered series. It is one of the few remastered CDs I own. Purchased to replace my cassette version.

No, Islands has the UK cover. It was originally issued with two different covers, one for the US and one for the UK. They apparently decided to use the UK version for all the Islands remasters.

Oh, and see yourself here

I'm sorry, I didn't mean the cover artwork, I meant the spine artwork - the Islands HDCD has the same "puzzle piece" as QE2, when it should fit between Discovery and Earth Moving. It even seems as though someone has already gone to a lot of trouble to make a replacement:

Anyway, thanks for the replies, I guess I'll keep my eyes out for an Orchestral Tubular Bells remaster, luckily I'd like to hear it anyway.

Ah yes, I see. My bad. Also, it's rather annoying that the bell motif has been designed so that it looks fine when you line them up on a table or a shelf so that the CD's are vertically, but when you put them on a CD tower the pictures in each spine are the wrong way around, which is rather annoying...

I have the complete set of remastered cds and have also noticed that they should line up to create the bell pic but they don't?? :/  Maybe there is one more and i don't have the set yet it could very well be that OTB has been remastered, but i've never seen it. It would be nice if they made up the pic in the correct way, which i suppose they were intended, it would look cool no matter which way you stack your cds :D

I've made a scan of the back cover of the remastered OTB and uploaded it to my site. Take a look and see if it completes the picture. The URL is .http://www.dbennett.karoo.net/OTB.jpg. Let me know the results.

In fact that gives me an idea. Could some one send me a scan of all the spines (apart from OTB, FMO and Islands)? I'll edit them together and post the resultant pic on my site. Either point me to a URL or email me at yetanothermikeoldfieldwebsite@yahoo.co.uk

It's amazing that after all that effort (or lack of), they still messed up the artwork. Do they not get anyone to check or something - it's a pretty noticeable mistake *grrrrrrr*

I remember buying Ommadawn as my first remastered CD and I had heard that there were going to be photos in the booklet. At the very least I expected a copy of the two pictures from the inner sleeve of the vinyl. What I got was a small picture of concrete. Are they taking the piss or what?
