'I've always liked what they now call Heavy Metal' - Mike Oldfield

As a (sort of) counterpart to DelfĂn's New Age topic, I'd like to know if there are people out there who like Heavy Metal, and if so, which bands.
Also, who do you think had an influence on Mike, and on which pieces does it show?

PS. Have you heard Blind Guardian's To France cover? Don't you think that, taking Blind Guardian for what they are, their version is quite adequate? (I've only listened to it twice so far, though)

Well, obviously, one of the heaviest pieces from Mike is Shadow on the Wall. Don't really listen to the stuff though, prefer 70s rock, the heaviest I've gone is Led Zep wink. I know this wasn't really what you wanted, Archangel Foster, but still.

Well, why not? wink I agree about Shadow On The Wall and I've already pointed out the connection between this piece and Outcast, which is another damn heavy one. And I know there's a lot more, but I can't seem to remember at the moment...

I don't own many records that could be called heavy metal, but I certainly don't mind listening to it sometimes...I know quite a few musicians who are into that stuff, so I've played stuff like Metallica and Guns 'n' Roses with bands before now and of course some stuff like Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin. It's a type of music that can be very exciting if it's done well, but just funny, or boring (to me at least), or both if it's not wink
A couple players I have a lot of respect for (ok, so I have repsect for most players in one way or another) have ventured into heavy territories - Those are:
Brian May (of Queen), who has done some really hard rocking songs together with the likes of Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters' drummer) and the legendary Cozy Powell (deceased rock drummer).
John Paul Jones, the ex-Led Zeppelin bassist who knocks out some killer riffs on his 10 and 12 string basses on his last album, Zooma.

I have heard Blind Guardian's "To France" once...I don't remember it that well, but I do remember that it wasn't totally awful.

Cochise was supposedly influenced by Led Zep's "Whole lotta love" although the connection seems rather small to me (unless the comment about the similarity was made about a demo version with a long percussion solo in the middle, over which Mike screamed, played the guitar with a violin bow and extracted buzzy whining sounds from a theremin). Paul Kossoff from 'Free' is another rock player who Mike has said influenced him, although I wouldn't count his playing as heavy metal.

It's Mike Oldfield and his guitar's riff who led me straigh in Heavy Metal.
First I've listened some 'Guitar Heroes' such as Joe Satriani, Steve Vai or Patrick Ronda, certainly because, at the time, they all played instrumental music. It was a sort of bridge with Mike. And I liked it very much. And so, after, I've listened to Metallica (which I still enjoy very much), Guns n' Roses (I was a great fan of Slash !), Iron Maiden, Annihilator, Gwar, etc... as much that my hairs were getting longer !
I still appreciate Heavy Metal, but in a more moderate way...
I think to know that Hank Marvin ('Wonderful Land') from The Shadows have influenced Mike ( as JM Jarre). Hank was considered as the greatest guitar player at the end of the sixties...
In my opinion, the most heavy metal pieces of Mike are 'Outcast', the little 'solo' guitar part in the 'Storm section' of Hergest Ridge, 'QE2', 'Taurus 1', 'Incantations part 3' and the first part of 'Four Winds' (which always remember me the 'Four Horsemen' From Metallica). I may have forgotten some...

Hi Archangel, If I remember correctly, the next sentence in the interview is 'I simply call it rock.' (Or so.)
So maybe it just means 'I've always liked rock.' ? -Just an idea.-

I wasn't going to say anything about that but...

If it's the interview I'm thinking of, Mike says "I've always liked what they now call heavy metal. We used to simply call it rock." (with 'now' being some time around 1983).

Absolutely correct, Korgscrew. Do you think I took the quote out of its context so that it doesn't work on its own? I think what he meant is that back in the 70s the term Heavy Metal was not yet in use or at least not so widely recognized. Sorry for the bad English in this post but I'm just listening to a Folk-Metal band with Swedish lyrics... called Otyg - check them out, they're fantastic.

I don't think he was heavy then, but he can be really heavy NOW:
Listen to Out Of Sight (Guitars)! Now, isn't that heavy? Like Heartbreaker by Led Zep! Or even more...

Folk-Metal? I hope they're not just playing fiddle tunes on distorted guitar - that has been done too often. But I'll check Otyg ... see y'all! -Carsten-

I'm into quite a lot of metal bands, but not Led Zeppelin (I listened to one of my dads albums, it did nothing for me). I'm into stuff like Nine Inch Nails and the like - gothic/industrial bands. There's so much feeling and inventiveness in their music - they're not all brilliant players, but they compensate with innovation.

I also like Metallica, but that's really a one off. This awful 'rap metal' and 'funk metal' thats around right now - that has to go. It's that kind of thing that has brought me back to listening to MO - at least he can PLAY his instruments and put together a decent composition longer than 3 minutes. It also led me to recosider my opinions on the prog-rock scene - bands like Yes and Emerson, Lake and Palmer (who inspired my name for this forum) and found their way into my collection lately - it's my means of protest again Limp Bizkit and Eminem.

And I'm only 21 years old - any Velvet Underground fans here, BTW?

in my opinion, what defines heay metal is not neccessrily the music, the guitar playing, or the words, but the image. Some of mike's music may be heavy, but i'm not sure that that makes it metal. i'm a bit of a fan, having a fair few iron maiden, metallica, nin albums, as well as some saxon, black sabbath etc... and i think the defining aspect of these bands is their image. limp bizkit is an example of how anyone can pretend to be a heavy metal band, but don't have the image to back it up. incidentally, although commonly attributed to the metal scene, Led Zepplin claimed that they weren't anything to do with heavy metal. i have a feeling that i've just disproved my own point... oh well.

I agree with KE9, limp bizkit is the worst shit i have ever heard. Can't say I'm much into metal, I like some 70ies rock though, pink floyd, early alan parsons project. i rarely think of mike as a rock artist...

There is a Welsh band called Karnataka that plays heavy folk rock, not bad either. I heard them on Bob Harris' radio program, there is probably a link to their website somewhere at http://www.bobharris.org

Bob Harris has also played bits from TSODE, TB3, Guitars and TMB, and introduced me to Celtus (a great band if you haven't heard them).

I like quite a lot of heavy metal. I'm not in it for the image though, I just like stuff that rocks. For that to work for me, musical talent is an essential ingredient. That's why I like Metallica and have already got the CD and DVD of S&M. They're great players and their songs are great to turn up loud!

Unfortunately, most other metal bands these days just aren't like that. They'll just take a dark subject matter and scream about it in a deep voice and try to pass it off as music. There are a couple of tracks in a similar style to this that I actually like such as Loco by Coal Chamber, but only if they have good riffs and rhythm. Bands like this often just forget about musical content altogether.

I also don't like the goth/industrial stuff like NIN. The only feeling behind it seems to be disturbed and depressed people trying to make others feel the same way.

Generally, I prefer the older stuff like Dio and Led Zeppelin (haven't bought any LZ yet though).

I also like what I've heard from Blind Guardian. They're covers of "To France" and Dio's "Don't Talk to Strangers" are great, and songs like "The Last Candle" and "Goodbye My Friend" show that they're own material is great too.

I never liked any lyrical music until I heard NIN. Most pop/rock lyrics are so stupid, but at least Trent Reznor make a better job of them than most. I know it's depressing, but that's my state of mind. Or at least some of the time. I mean, I was listening to 'Roundabout' by Yes today, and if that ain't the mirror opposite to 'Star****ers Inc', I don't know what is....(Crises also got it's first airing in months, though ironically I skipped 'In High Places, as one Jon Anderson song was quite enough for one day).

No, come to think of it, those two songs DO have something in common. They're both on albums referred to as 'Fragile'.

the smashing pumpkins could be called a 'heavy metal' band but they also can be one of the softest and most delicate...their music permeates the same strength of emotion that mike's does...and yet unfairly becuase of those misinterpreting his intelligence as arrogance, Billy Corgan (the singer) has been portrayed by the press as an egotist, just like they have done with mike...their music is thoughtful, and has integrity, which is the most important thing that a musician/band should have...adore is the most genuinely beautiful album not by mike that i have ever heard...they are INCOMPARABLE to any other heavy metal band, their diversity, passion, genius is unrivalled...but now sadly, they are no longer a band frown...

Quote (KE9 @ Feb. 26 2001, 15:51)
any Velvet Underground fans here, BTW?

Wouldn't call myself a fan and nowadays I hardly listen to them, but Loaded is great and especially their early records with John Cale. I adore "Songs for Drella" (not a Velvet album,
but an outstanding piece of  music, mainly written by Reed)-
Reed and Cale reestablished their relationship and produced a
fantastically good album...

Well, what about the mad guitars on Out of Mind,Cochise,Amarok,Outcast,Crises and Shadow On The Wall?
W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L !
Mike on that tunes makes me getting into headbanger´s mode!

Sometimes I like something like heavy stuff.Saw Joe Satriani live this year.I like the nu-metal from Linkin Park( ;)  ).I need to exorcise my demons sometimes. And that kind of stuff is perfect.
