What do people think? Will TB 2003 achieve the same success as the original?

In my honest (and considered) opinion it will get to number 1 in the charts (I'm sure a lot of parents will buy it).

If it gets to number one - how many weeks will it stay there? I think maybe 4?

Your opinions please...

An interesting one this, because,Dark Side Of The Moon, only got to about 14 when it was re-released in the UK charts, but i think that was because a lot of people already have the album, and unless they want to rush out to buy a SACD player are not going to buy it again, which is fair enough, but unlike that album, the new Tubular Bells is basically a new record, but people have a fair idea of what the quality of the music is before hand,so,i think it could do very well,it as always goes down to the way it is marketed,Mike's record companies have not really been fair to Mike with marketing his last few albums, hopefully this will change with Tubular Bells 2003

I'm not sure how here in the Netherlands they will handle it. Like Tres Lunas, never heard anything about it except in the record store in magazines. But on tv: nope, not even the To Be Free videoclip. But they did broadcast that To France cover  :(

Tubular Bells however is very famous with, like gregrobson described, parents and older people. But for the rest, I don't think it will be in the charts here. It only contains crap crap crap. I will be suprised and happy if it does make it in the charts. Bloody people here.  :(

I think it has the potential to do well here in the UK. TB2 was promoted with complete saturatiuon coverage and so did very well, also it rode the crest of the ambient wave which was sweeping the land in 1992, remember the Orb had just had a number one album and a 40 minute long number one single so the timing of the release of TB2 could not have been better.

What this new recording has going for it, in terms of chart success, is that there is bugger all else happening in the music industry at the moment. I don't think there are any major bands releasing albums next month and I think the record buying public are desperate for genuinely good music to be released. Of course whether or not the new TB is any good or not remains to be seen, if it's crap it won't chart for long, if it's fantastic it could do very, very well for Mike. I would certainaly expect to see the promotional campaign for the release to start round about now. I've noticed a few of the May issues of the music mags starting to appear on the shelves but I've yet to spot any word on Mike, hopefully we're not going down the Tres Lunas road again. I suppose it could be a case of the media being bored of TB albums which is a possibility

One thing to add however is that we can now assume there won't be live performance, unless they're leaving it to the last minute, which I doubt. I think this is a real shame as both the TB2 and 3 premiere's did a lot of good in terms of helping album sales especially the live TV broadcast of TB2 from Edinburgh, it made this a real event.

Oh would it be so cool to see this album do so well (Especially since i wasn't even born yet when the first one came out and stayed at the charts for so long). But quite honestly, and i know this is pessimistic, but there's no way its going to stay long on the charts. sure, it might hit number one for like a week or a day or so, but that's it. It's just the music of the current time. When it came out in the 70s, that was the type of music everyone was goin for: rock and roll with a ambient sounds and long, long tracks. Nowadays, it's all pop, hip hop or dance/trance/club. So unfortunately, it won't be the biggest album of the year (or even of the month). But it would be soooooooooooooo cool if it was.

I agree with you TOBY,

there is a distinct lack of original music in the charts (Pop Stars, pop Idol, and Fame Academy have a lot to answer for), so perhaps this will help.

As for the magazines, I wouldn't count on them too much - their readers aren't likely to have heard the original (why isn't it on the Music Syllabus in schools?). However broadsheets might give it some prominence in their reviews as they see TB as a significant work of its time that shaped the following years of music development.

You may actually find its the other way around. I've still got a lot of the broadsheets from when TB2 was released and some were vaguely positive articles and some were very negative, indeed I think the Independent on Sunday (if I remember rightly) was particularly ferocious in its attack on Mike both artisticaly and personaly. The Times has alway's been a supporter though I think.

With the British music press I would expect magazines like Q and Mojo to at least show an interest especialy Mojo which is aimed at a more mature audience that takes good music seriously. Q has shown an interest in the past although I seriously question it's ability to review Mike's stuff with any consistancy, it gave Amarok 2 stars out of five???????????? and TB3 4 stars out of five????????????? There's also Classic Rock magazine which is aimed at the narrow minded (and ageing) hard rock crowd. It's an alright magazine really but it did give Tres Lunas the worst review imaginable.

I'm just wondering whether Mike will get any publicity here in Australia at all. Mike has been somewhat nonexistant here since I started paying attention, but prehaps the Tubular Bells label will help a bit. I'm really not sure how well it will do: I'm sure that it will sell well, but I'll have to check if it gets on the charts. The main thing is whether it gets over here at all. It took me to christmas to get Tres Lunas, and that was from Canada. Again, the Tubular Bells label will probably help,  so I will be expecting it to be released. I'll see if there's anyone official I can ask.

But let's be honest, TB 2003 is hardly "original music", is it? It's a rehash of something originally released 30 years ago!

Whether or not the CD-buying public actually gives a toss about a re-recording of the original TB remains to be seen. I would expect that the publicity splurge will help it crack the Top 10 for a while, but I really don't believe that music buyers are gasping for a slightly enhanced version of something they've probably already got.

I'm also expecting a fair bit of negative press based around the "Oldfield is out of ideas/desperate attempt at a career relaunch/does the world really want another version of TB" arguments.
