I wonder if there is any numbers on that. We know about us, but who and how many is it?
Where do they live?
I know about norway and that isnt many at all.. But some one really love him, but most of them play guitars and is musicans. Why dont world know? Any or everybody i play mike for, love his music at the moment! And they dont know him!!!
This confuse me, beacuse world wide know tubular bells have sold so much ect ect.. (but tb time is over) We are in the millenium now, and we wait for his dobbel album Light and Shade. But i never hear or can read about him at the music news, papers or anything else, and still do he make money!! This dont make me sense, so he must have many fans to make this out , or what??

There are a lot of people out there who know Mike's name and a lot of people out there have heard of TB. The amount of people you would class as fans out there probably isn't so great these days. Mike probably has what I would describe as dormant fans, fans who used to love his stuff during the 70, 80's and early 90's but don't really know where it all went wrong after that. I certainly know a few people who I would classify under this catagory. I suppose these people would re-awaken pretty rapidy if he did something mind blowing. In a way Mike has undermined himself in recent years, for a long time he rightfully distanced himself from new-age musak and rightfully told the world his music was something more, however I get the feelling his music and new-age music are now closer than they've ever been so i think quite a few people just associate him with new-age these days. He certainly seems less keen in denouncing new-age music than he used to in interviews.

I think it'll be interesting to see the final direction of this new album, what the fans think of it, what the critics think of it and how well it does commercially for him. I don't know what the ratio of fans shed to new fans gained is with all these recent albums, I think thats the key question.

My uncle has a pretty mainstream taste in music, he said whilst Amarok was playing 'Mike Oldfield almost learnt how to play these instruments!' in the harsh sounds bit at the start, I tried to explain but he said that was a rather weird thing to do in an album, then during Crises he said, 'it's a shame that Tubular bells was the only good album that he made'

I burst out laughing  :D

We did have it as background rather than in the forefront, my Aunt refers to it as noise...............  :/

There are quite a few fans obviously, but they are scattered and don't necessarily know each other except from fan meetings etc. I'd say the vast majority of Mike's fans lives in Europe, and most of them make music themselves in some form.

As an American, it seems that there are about 11 total Mike Oldfield fans in my country. Unless some breaththrough happens, he will be known forever in an obscure way as the "devil music guy" or "the guy who wrote a song for Hall and Oates" :)

There are lots of ways to find out such information...

Take a look at sales figures, for example. Depending on your definition of what a fan is, those will give you an idea (if your idea of a fan is someone who buys everything Mike does, no matter how good or bad it is, I'd suggest trying the figures for Heaven's Open).

Looking around all the various forums from around the world can also give a vague idea of how many fans there are online. You'll start seeing various people in more than one place...

There are about 1,000 members in the Dark Star fanclub, if that's helpful to know.

there is many sites for mike world wide. I can see many from spain, german, and other europan country'. I also see brasil as an "love mike" people. About my time in greek, crete, i found a very special store in Chania. There it was an lady (35 year). She had a very paint artist look, just like a gypsy. We became to talk a about music (this wasent a music store, but a mix of meditate things, candles, smells, things and some chill music with nature sounds) I ask here about mike oldfield, and she suprised me with a smile; "Oh! mike yes!! Hes my favorite! I just love everything he have done ect ect.."
This was a cool inspiration for me. I think that more south you travel in europe, then many fans of mike you will find. In the spirit of spain, italy and greece you find some very special people that have they interest in mood and chill music. In they stores you certainly find mike oldfield! Not only cd, but lp (vinyl, too) The last one that i love!;) And i think for my self........................... hm.........
Its not a second thought that i dont wish to take my wife and kids to spain. I will live there!! I feel mike music more in the warm countries. The ocean, spirit, art, warm winds and landskapes. But... hes not my only reason for wish living in spain. Im not that huge fan he he...
I only thinking.....
and after thinking ... i think about other fans and how many we really is..
quite many, but one man in the million around every corner..

Another American here - I can count on one hand the number of people that I've met in my life who have even heard of Mike Oldfield.  Many people may know the Exorcist theme, but don't know the name of it nor the name of the artist who wrote and performed it.

Yeh I would think that album sales is the only way to tell really, and with Korgscrews suggestion, if you look at the sales for HO, being his least popular album I am assuming, you would get a truer example of the die hard fans who buy everything and have stuck with him through the entire journey. So where do you look to find out album sales numbers?

There was an interesting poll about the geographical location of MO fans a while back: http://tubular.net/forums....ns+live - though of course, the result is probably flawed by some fans not having access to the internet or knowledge of English, so that they don't even come here in the first place.

Mike has 187.3 fans.  One of these is very sick, so this figure may be subject to a later recalculation.

:D

But I would have thought that some may have bought HO due to being religous etc. Just because it isn't well loved by Mike's fans doesn't mean that no-one else but the 'hardcore' would buy it

hahaha. and the number will go down by 23.9 fans if he does "TB4" (the reduction is only 1.7 fans if he instead does "Tubular 4 Ducks")

Just out of interest is there somewhere online where you can take a look at an individual albums sales figure's. I'd be interested to see any breakdown of Mike's catalogue in terms of sales.

In Brazil Mike is seen as a new age artist than a prog rock artist :(

And he's not a household name like other prog rock acts like Yes,Genesis,Pink Floyd. But here there is people who know who Mike is.

If Ray Wilson(ex-Genesis) did a solo concert here and he's not well known in here(less than Mike),why not Mike playing here one day? I'll do my best to see this concert happeing one day !

For many years, I always found Oldfield in New Age bins in music stores. Recently, some call the bins "Lifestyles" instead. In the US, when he is known, he is known as a new ager.

You know, I don't like the word "fan". When I hear "FAN", I think about someone, who dosen't care about the music, who dosen't eaven listen to the music, becouse all attension is focused on screaming "WE LOVE YOU" or something like that. I think about someone, who dosen't care about music, becouse all attention is focused on kissing photo, and putting it under the pillow. It's funny, of course, but I would not call my self "FAN". I honestly Love MO "sound-worlds". but "Fan".... Let's find some better expression!  :p
