Well, I'd say 2 1/2 because there's one Moody Blues forum I used to spend lots of my time at when I was younger, but almost nobody goes there! So I guess maybe just 2.

There was also another one that I visited but it got really boring

Well, this is pretty much the only forum I vist (and post in) with a constant regularity. I'm registered to other places too, but this is definitely my steady harbour in the big ocean of the WWW. :D

Mainly here, plus a fun place called rathergood.com. In fits and bursts at URU (game) sites and occasionally the yesworld . Oh - and myspace.

I get plenty of spare time at work these days and the forums pass the time. Forums have really made the world a smaller place for me, chatting to people on different continents at all times of the day.

I am a member of four forums.

Tubularnet where I use to spend most of my time and definitely the most posts.

Anglersnet, a UK fishing site where I visit the Photography forum, enter most of the Comps and have won one.

Paisley Days which is a US hippie forum, all about Peace and Love and anything you want to talk about. They desperately need new members, only have about 50, so if anyone is interested, please let me know.

Sia, an Aussie singer, she has featured in the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack and on the final episode of the tv series Six Feet Under, she's right up there with Kate and Tori and Sinead.

But at the moment I am obsessed with You Tube. Last Wednesday I saw a video from a man known as MHarris1920 who was challenging geriatric1927's claim to be the oldest member of You Tube, which has afforded him a lot of publicity and over half a million views of his videos. Martin had made 4 videos in a week which I watched and then discovered from a comment posted on the last video that he had passed away on Oct 9th, just 3 days before I saw his first video. His wife may continue to post videos in his memory, very sad.

Hey all,

This topic seems to have been created by a spammer, but it was a half-way decent one, so we made a few course corrections and left it.

This Board had pretty-much been it for me until a few months ago when I joined another one for perspective, and then recently yet a third. The first one is a Rush Board. Nice group of people--huge forum and I keep getting lost, but find my way back to where I want to be. The other one I just joined and haven't had time to make so much as one "hello" type post. That one focuses on IQ (er, the prog rock band as opposed to the test).

Lately I've been finding my direction again and am seriously thinking of heading back to school for another degree. I want to focus on some aspect of online communities/virtual worlds with regard to sociological or anthropological aspects.  For me, increased involvement in virtual communities has led to greater  blurring between "real" and "virtual." For example, last week when my 12-year old had amnesia and knew I was out of town but didn't remember where and she was too lazy to ask her sister in the next room, she messaged Korg, who informed her. Someone half a planet away tells her where her mother is. In Second Life, some artists digitize their tangible paintings to sell to folks for their Second Life homes. Some SL residents buy virtual ones, while others go on to buy the real painting to hang in their real homes. As you well know, many "Planet Oldfield" community members have met in real life. I find it interesting how "virtual" and "real" impact on each other and shape community, both the virtual ones, but also the real life ones. Relationships seem to be the most important component. Whether it is a forum like this, or something with more immersion like Second Life, perhaps virtuality is a medium that sustains relationships, whether they are completely virtual or mixed reality. <needs to finish Howard Rheingold's book>

That's a funny story about your daughter! :)

I used to visit a lot of forums when ezboard was popular (circa 2001-2003).  I had a few friends who had their own board, as did I, and some members posted on all of the boards we owned.  Gradually, all of the boards died out except for mine.  My board left ezboard and I closed it a year later (in early 2005) due to low activity.  After that, I noticed the same thing happening at almost every board I visited: people just weren't interested in web forums anymore.

Recently, I've been using slightly more forums than usual:

Tubular.net (of course) - I don't read much outside General Discussion and Fan Tracks / Fan Music Discussion, and I don't post as much as some, but I do enjoy reading even if I keep quiet some of the time.

Flickr - This is a huge photo community and there are some very interesting groups.  FlickrCentral is a particularly active group, and it's nice to be able to post a topic about experiences of being an amateur photographer and get 50-100 replies within a day!

Yuku - The successor to ezboard, Yuku hasn't become all that busy yet, but it is a good service and continues one of ezboard's main selling points (aside from "ease of use"): a network of boards that you can access via a single username.  I don't post much as not many people reply, and it feels like I'm talking to myself!

The Thrillseekers - I don't visit this forum much, it's pretty quiet.

Plus several others that I don't visit often or are too quiet to be worth mentioning :)

Interesting story, and I think such a study about those things would be very interesting too...
For me, I always 'feared' life getting too eh, digital... I was always kind of afraid that all things we do manually will be done by computers in the end, and that all shops would disappear and only online shops would remain... Hmmm... Of course some good points can come with it too...

If it's any consolation, the literature indicates that people have been concerned about the dissolution of "community" ever since Gutenberg invented moveable type. Prior to that, people gathered in the town square to hear news from travelers and others. Mass printing eventually led to the development of newspapers, which (especially after literacy improved) people would take inside their homes to read instead of hearing the latest in a community social setting. The invention of the telephone was also met with skepticism and concern--such an impersonal, strange, mechanical way to communicate--what would be its effect on society? Those inventions altered it, but humans continue to find ways to socialize and build community. There are now 800,000 members of Second Life, and that figure is expected to be in billions within another year. Once you have 3 billion people interacting, buliding friendships, communities, and learning about each other in such an immersed environment, maybe we finally do find a way to
'all get along." Though of course there will still be digital divide issuses. When I hopped online nearly 10 years ago and found geography no longer much of a constraint for friendships and collaboration, I had high hopes for that. We'll see.... :)

Well, today, I'm spending a lot of time on forums. It's a teacher training day at my school, so I get to spend time at home doing fun, fun, fun...and homework. Blast!

Anyway, I've spent most of my time on forums such as The Internet Movie Database when I haven't been obsessing over work. I visit YouTube sometimes, see if LemKuiper's done anything new. But, the friendliest of all the forums appears to be this one, so it is a personal favourite.

Im on 4 forums.

This one, runrig (stopped posting coz it got utter shite), alternative nation (got crap aswell) and celtic radio (people were a bit weird)

Forums can be pretty good but too many of them get rubbish with the same people talking crap all the time.

This is my favourite one of them.

I spend quite a bit of my free time online. I used to administrate two communities - one for Tolkien fans and another for creative writing. After a few years, I experienced a bit of burnout and retired. So what do I do? I go and join a Mike Oldfield fan community.

Which is weird because in real life I'm rather antisocial.

Strange you should say that Sweatpea I was also an administrator for a website but for Retro Music. I also experienced a burn out and retired only to find myself Moderating one of the biggest Football forums. Still not entirely sure how that happened!

I'm not a big poster on this forum. Although i often read this forum.

This one, obviously. Enya forum (which I don't like too much due to extremely tight moderation but it's the best source of news). Pet Shop Boys forums. Popjustice. I lurk on bodybuilding.com as well. In general, yeah, I spend too much time on forums, but I like it and I refuse to feel guilty...

How much time? Hmm...well what time is it now?
Oh... 1 o'clock in the night, so I'd guess that will be my answer -too much time.    ;)

Exept from this forum I use to be at www.zoolook.nl and www.jarreforum.com.
...and trying to visit these once in a while: www.forum.francisrimbert.com and www.ibanez.com/forum.

But I have never figured out how to register on www.unknowncountry.com/board/index.phtml?winmain
because they don't exept hotmail addresses. :D

  I think there are times when all that's needed is either a brief respite or a change of scenery.
