Hello!

If you were in total control over a Mike Oldfield CD re-releases, how would that look? Bonus tracks? Artwork? Liner notes? Extras? Demos? Live version?

Mike did include the demos for Tubular Bells on Tubular Bells 2003 DVD-A and that made me start thinking of other albums with that little extra.

The YES reissues from Rhino for example are CDs filled with extra tracks and cool stuff, could you imagine if Virgin would have done the same with the HDCD reissues?

EXAMPLES

Tubular Bells 1973
Bonus tracks: The original demos and the live premiere?

Platinum 1979
Extras: Sally (Of course...)

If you could pick an album and package it and include anything you wanted post a replay and tell us?

That's a good topic. At the moment, I don't have enough time to think about it, but yes, it would be nice to think about extras. If anything, each album should contain singles and B-sides from its era. For example, Tubular Bells would bring things like 'Froggy Went A-Courting", and Ommadawn would have "In Dulci Jubilo" and "Pipe Tune", perhaps? Crises would have "Crime Of Passion" and "In The Pool" and extended versions of "Moonlight Shadow" and "Shadow On The Wall", and Discovery would definitely bring goodies like "Pictures In The Dark", along with an extended "To France".

Another idea is to gather all these singles and B-sides and miscellaneous into a compilation. I still need to think of a nifty playlist, though.

It is indeed frustrating that there was no effort to gather these assorted tracks as bonuses. They would definitely be very welcome.

Either of these possibilities would definitely be the way to go. I tend towards the latter; a proper collection of all the rare material from the Virgin era would be the thing if you know what I mean :) Strange they don't do it, come to think of it, I guess there would be enough buyers for it to pay off.
However, if one was to go with your first suggestion, then Pipe Tune would definitely, absolutely need to go on Incantations - if there's any space left on the disc, that is... (probably not, seeing as how the early CDs of Inc had a piece cut out...)

The problem is with the record companies, they have no interest in Mike. Sucked him dry, then forgotten him.

I feel he would actually be beetter off with either his own label, or a small independant who would fight to get licences to his old stuff.

My choice for re-issues would be 2 or 3 b-sides/single only tracks, plus some dvd video extras

If I were re-issuing albums I would like to try and have Mike be involved in writing some of the liner notes, prehaps talking about the making of the album and some history behind it. Including some B-Sides and other rare tracks and things would be a great idea: Songs of Distant Earth could have Song of the Boat Men, Indian Lake etc. You could include all the extended versions of songs like Moonlight Shadow, Heaven's Open, the instrumental Tricks of the Light and heaps and heaps of other B-sides like the ones from Boxed. I'd certainly like to hear some outtakes from Amarok or Music from the Balcony!

There is just so much stuff to include, and then you could start on the live performances. Wow.

Well I can see what you mean in terms of sound and musicians and where it was recorded, but Guilty does quote liberally from Incantations itself.....

Yes, Guilty sounds more related to Incantations than to Platinum, melodically speaking. Also, it would be nice for a contrast. :D

I suggested putting "Pipe Tune" in Ommadawn because, well, Incantations occupies almost a whole CD, and I think it would be pushing too hard to include more stuff... though a second CD could do it. Also, "Pipe Tune" works as a "prequel" of Incantations, I think. I dunno. Really.

Well i am amazed people are talking about re-issues,when most of the time people are complaining about buying all the same music again,if you bought a reissue with extras, you are still buying an album you already own,so,the best thing would be a new package, maybe 2,of demo's,different takes, live cuts, unreleased tracks etc,and if that did happen,it would be nice for Mike himself to write about each track.I'm sure this will all happen one day,but maybe it's a little to early in Mike's career yet, plus all the usual things about rights etc.

Well, we aren't considering buying all CD's again with extras included (though there are people who would do it), but it would be extremely nifty if the HDCD remasters, for example, had included those goodies. As for now, we can only discuss and ponder over the matter.

They do?  Damn, I must dig out my old vinyl of Platinum because I can't even remember how that one goes.

Well if this is the case then I agree - Guilty gets moved to Platinum, along with the 'proper' version of Sally, Blue Peter and Alright Now.....

You know, even after listening to Incantations numerous times and Platinum dozens of times, I never saw the slightest similarity between them, melodically. Really. I don't know why they should "go together".

The similarity is not in melody but harmony. I'm too lazy to check it out exactly now, but I will sometime in the near future, and will let you know about it  :D

Hello!

If I remember correctly, Mike Oldfield mentions in one of the interviews on the video "The essential" that he wanted to make a more upbeat "disco" thing based around the chords or harmony of "Incantation". He wanted to use the basic disco stlye arrangement with bass and drums but use a different set of chords and harmonies usually not found in commercial discosongs.

So maybe "Guilty" is more related to "Incantations" on a chord/harmony way and with "Platinum" on the arrangment and rythmic way?

Great replies everyone!
