Hey! It is time to think about a new Oldfield album!
I wonder what kind of an album would you like to hear next time?

I would happy to hear an instrumental composition like Vivaldi’s FOUR SEASONS. In Four Parts, each about 15-20 minutes. To recall the complexity, the dramatic/lyric mood of  Winter, Spring, Summer and an Autumn… That would something really for M.O!

And what about you?

Really?  Light and Shade hasn't been out for very long, and I'm quite happy with that for the time being.  Albums take time to put together! ;)

The 4CD Elements box set is similar to your Four Seasons idea... but only in terms of the name and the artwork.  Fire, Water, Wind and Earth are each represented with a separate CD.  Very few of the pieces are themed, though.  Also, this is a compilation, rather than a conventional studio album.

The Light and Shade concept is good, but if this had been a 4 disc concept like Four Seasons, there's a risk that half of the tracks would be of average quality (at best).

I do think that an album where the tracks meld together to make one big masterpiece (whether by literally being joined together or just having a natural progression) is far more powerful than a collection of unrelated compositions.  But it takes time to write and produce, and if it's not well received, the whole album can be written off.

I love the old-style MO albums, i.e. long instrumental with several songs, but it doesn't look like they'll be coming back anytime soon (if at all).  Mike could still do a 4CD concept album without needing a long instrumental, but it could be a long wait.  While I was pleasantly surprised by Light and Shade being a double CD, I'm quite happy with 1CD albums if they come out regularly, as multi-CD albums tend to take longer.

Anyway - those are just my thoughts, and should not be taken as gospel ;)

@ tamas, I really like your idea but I don't think Mike has it in him anymore, the inspiration or the inclination, unfortunately.

@ Moz, always enjoy your interesting and well thought out posts. You are becoming one of my favourite contributors.

cheers,
Tracy.

oh , I don't know about that. I think Mike can be full of surprises,  after Islands and Earth Moving, he changed direction and brought us Amarok   :) .   Come on everyone give Mike a break it's hardly three months since the release of L&S  :/ .

Oh yes, Galadriel, I was not refering to Mikes output, no complaints there whatsoever, I just think Mike is more interested in making money these days than making soul searching epic masterpieces, sorry.
