Really? Light and Shade hasn't been out for very long, and I'm quite happy with that for the time being. Albums take time to put together!
The 4CD Elements box set is similar to your Four Seasons idea... but only in terms of the name and the artwork. Fire, Water, Wind and Earth are each represented with a separate CD. Very few of the pieces are themed, though. Also, this is a compilation, rather than a conventional studio album.
The Light and Shade concept is good, but if this had been a 4 disc concept like Four Seasons, there's a risk that half of the tracks would be of average quality (at best).
I do think that an album where the tracks meld together to make one big masterpiece (whether by literally being joined together or just having a natural progression) is far more powerful than a collection of unrelated compositions. But it takes time to write and produce, and if it's not well received, the whole album can be written off.
I love the old-style MO albums, i.e. long instrumental with several songs, but it doesn't look like they'll be coming back anytime soon (if at all). Mike could still do a 4CD concept album without needing a long instrumental, but it could be a long wait. While I was pleasantly surprised by Light and Shade being a double CD, I'm quite happy with 1CD albums if they come out regularly, as multi-CD albums tend to take longer.
Anyway - those are just my thoughts, and should not be taken as gospel
