There is a seller on eBay keeps posting illegal bootlegs of various things including Mike Oldfield shows. I have no objections to bootleg trading between fans providing they're the sorts who will buy the studio albums anyway but this guy is making money by making illegal copies of Mike's music and that of others.

A complaint from me to eBay has fallen on deaf ears, I was just wondering if anyone knows of anything we can do about this. If it will be allowed on this board I would be happy to post this person's username but given it's illegal stuff I'm concerned I may get in some trouble for doing so. He currently has 30 items for sale and all of them are CDs he's copied.

So what can be done about this sort of thing?

I'm not sure why they won't pull the auctions - I've seen illegal software auctions that have been removed.  Have you tried the ebay community forums?  They may have a better idea of why these listings are not being removed.

What I don't like at all to see to be selling on Ebay are Mike's Autographs, since it's only "Mike Oldfield" and there's nothing sooo special(like a personal note before signing) on them...

Is there any other way to get these shows aside from buying such bootlegs?

If people would share them, then there won't be the need of buying. But most are difficult to find and sometimes there's no other option. I have uploaded a few things to eMule:
- Edinburgh 80 (FLAC)
- Tr3s Lunas II (MP3)
- Return To The Origin (MP3)

Also, uploaded by other people, you can download these:
- Katowice 99
- TMB (acetate)

Also, have a look at the eMule links topic on this board  ;)

I don't consider emule to be an option. Several days to download something via broadband does not cut it. Also, isn't there something about it that forces you to upload? That's a major drawback to me; it's like a restaurant that requires you to spew food as you eat it.

I can easily understand why you personally wouldn't want such items, Tati - but I can't see why you'd object to them being sold on eBay. Obviously there's nothing as good as a personal inscription, but sometimes that simply isn't possible.

I know, for example, that basically it would be almost impossible for me to get Alanis Morissette to sign something for me, but I've bought one or two signed items that have given me a lot of pleasure over the years. I may not have been there when she did it, but my copy of Under Rug Swept is (genuinely) signed by the hand that made it, and that gives it an extra resonance for me.

The real problem on eBay is not the existence of signed items up for sale, but the huge proliferation of both obvious and not-so-obvious fakes that somehow find buyers!

I would never buy an autographed item just because it was autographed because unless you saw it being signed yourself, how can you tell if it is real or not. How do you know your Alanis siggy is genuine Alan?

At the time I was using an Alanis message board, and I asked if anyone who'd met Alanis and had asked her to sign something for them (so the pedigree of the signatures was unassailable) would scan their autographs and post them. A lot of people responded, and it was really interesting to see so many all together, absolutely characteristic of her signature - which is really lovely - almost an abstract work of art in itself. Even when scrawled on a T-shirt, it was easily recognisable as hers.

I've spent most of my life looking in great detail at drawings and manuscripts, so I've gradually acquired an eye for recognising certain characteristic hand movements in drawings and writing styles. Once I'd seen a good sample of genuine autographs, it became clear that of all the autographs on eBay at any time, probably fewer than 1 in 10 were genuine - but the genuine ones really were quite unmistakable - once you get used to her style, and you know what to look for. It took quite a lot of work for me to get to that point, but it was worth it (and what's more, a really interesting exercise).

Here's my autographed copy of Under Rug Swept.

And here's a signed promo photograph.

I know this is off topic, but it doesn't seem worth starting a new thread for something of such limited interest, so here goes.

The most rewarding of all my Sherlock Holmes-style detective hunts to verify an Alanis autograph on eBay concerned a signed copy of Jagged Little Pill.

The problem (my dear Watson) is that Alanis's autograph has evolved. The beautiful signature she uses now is very different to the one she used back in 95/96 when the Jagged Little Pill tours were on. So when this one came up on eBay, I just couldn't tell for sure if it was genuine - see here. It felt right, somehow, in my bones - but it was so different to the ones I'd become so familar with. However, in this case there were two other signatures - supposedly by members of her band, Chris Chaney and Nick Lashley. I had no idea at all what their signatures were like - but if I could verify those, then clearly the Alanis one would be genuine also. With me so far?

OK then, so the game was afoot. But I couldn't find anyone who had a 'real' Chris Chaney signature. Then I found a photo of a Chris Chaney guitar pick, with his autograph stamped on it. It was in a light colour, so I reversed the tones of the black signature on the CD cover and matched it up against the guitar pick reference. You can see the comparison here. That pretty well clinched it for me, but it would be even better to be able to authenticate Nick Lashley's autograph as well - right?

Again, nobody seemed to have one, but again I found a photograph of a Nick Lashley guitar pick. Here are the two compared.

So that was that. The case was solved, Watson wrote it up, and I went back to playing the violin and looking for my deerstalker.
