I was recommended this album over the weekend by a friend of mine after her performance on the Jools Holland show which I sadly missed(although I`ve since watched it on you tube so all is not lost) But anyway I`ve been absolutely blown away by this album these last few days I just can`t stop playing it.So Imelda is an Irish lady who sings writes her own songs and plays the bodhran. But don`t let your imagination run away with you there because her roots are without doubt firmly planted in rockabilly.Well ok maybe it`s a long shot that there`s any of you "hep cats" out there I know. But honestly even if you`re not big on that whole old time rock n` roll vibe I guess. This album is just jam packed with fantastic songs. There are also some very fine torch like ballads contained here as well for instance.Anyway imo she has an amazing voice and her band are absolutely top notch with a first rate production job here as well.Which she also did herself apparently aah is there no limit to her talents?

Anyway kind of a strange thing happened to me this morning because the guy who plays guitar in the band and who is in fact Imelda`s other half so`s to speak.Well I`ve actualy kind of known this guy for quite a while in a way from posting on another message board (football related). So of course I went on there earlier whilst listening to this album at the same time curiously enough and everybody`s kind of congratulating him for his performance on the show etc.Well it certainly took me by surprise because in fairness the bloke just does`nt mention it at all. He`s a great poster on there though with a fantastic sense of humour I always enjoy reading his posts. So yeah I feel like I`m rubbing shoulders with celebrities now     :p Anyway imo he may have trouble "keeping it quiet" for much longer because I rather think himself and his good lady wife might be going places.I`d certainly love to think so anyway.

The two songs Imelda performed on the Jools Holland show are linked below for anyone interested.A certain Jeff Beck was in the audience as well who had expressly come to see Imelda and the guys perform..Great stuff.

I don't really like rockabilly (too far back in time for me...) but the slow piece in that clip sounds really nice. And her voice also does. Thanks for the tip, Dirk. ;)

Good on yer fella`s.I know there`s kind of a "glut" of female singer songwriters around at the moment particularly here in the UK.So yeah people like Amy Winehouse,KT Tunstall,Kate Nash,Amy McDonald etc.Imo I think it`s all too easy to lump a lot of these people in together as yer "housewife`s monthly choice down the supermarket" or something.Which is maybe a little bit dis-respectful I suppose, but nevertheless there`s certainly a big market out there for this kind of stuff nowadays. So Imelda is`nt quite in that elite bracket just yet but imo she certainly has more than the potential to be so.I learned yesterday that Jools has apparently invited her onto his New Years show which could well be the making of her in some respects. It certainly did wonders for KT Tunstall over here.

@Ugo..I actualy got to speak to Darrell the guitar player in the band online yesterday.Just really to congratulate him on the album more than anything else. But anyway whilst doing so I was really tempted to tell him that this album was so much more than just a rockabilly album to me.There`s a whole lot of musical styles explored on the album for instance. From some really achingly beautiful torch like ballads as I said earlier. To one great little number that sounds like a distant cousin to The Beatles track Dr Robert.I kind of stopped myself from mentioning it in the end because I`ve since learned that he`s been plugging away at the rockabilly scene as a solo artist himself for years. So yeah I did`nt want to offend him by trying to pay him a compliment if you know what I mean?Plus also I`m sure the guy`s quite aware that it`s much more than a rockabilly album himself so I guess I did`nt want to look like an idiot either..  :p

That said I can see how songs like "Johnny`s Got A Boom Boom"..may well be a tad too stylisticaly irksome for some people.I mean personaly I love a lot of rockabilly stuff so I don`t have that problem fortunatly.I just hope that the "rockabilly" tag is`nt the thing that stops her from "greater things" if you like.Becuase with all due respect looking back at some of those names I mentioned at the top of this post..Well I rather think the "mainstream" would be missing out big time imho.
