It's that time of year again when M.O's festive hit (it got to #5 you know) is used on countless XMAS compilation cd's and can be heard in the background of TV show's (Eastenders to name just one...) However, this saturday on channel 4, Noddy Holder will present a show called Christmas top ten hits, showcasing the most memorable XMAS hits. Anyone want to hedge any bets whether Oldfield's hit will be mentioned (and remember- it's in the album charts at the moment on the 'NOW xmas2005 massive hits' compilation...)

doubt be Mikes most played Tk..... Thank God its Decent

they format the Table I guess.....  on Plays or sales !!
or even worse whats presumed to be Cool  !! Mike appears
to be in "The not cool" camp at the moment so have to
wait and see I guess,,, That said Old Dog Noddy may
have a say and select it as he has a pretty good  ear
for quality !!  Ok Whos going to run a Book on it !!
33/1  to be top 3  16/1 4 or 5  8/1 6 or 7  3/1 8 or 9

I didn't even realize that was a Christmas song. I've never heard it over here in America.

I've seen it all over the place in hymnals and Christmas song books. It is often called "Good Christian Men Rejoice" (or "Good Christian Friends Rejoice"). As a Christmas carol, it is a lot slower than Oldfield's version.

I've also heard some versions, but never the Mike Oldfield version. I can only hear it if I play "Collaborations". Here, it is one of those "never been played on the radio, tv, etc" songs that is big elsewhere (similar to "Moonlight Shadow").

Oh, that's sad, I feel so sorry for you in the US etc. One of the reasons I look forward to Christmas is that I hear In Dulci Jubilo frequently at this time of year & in unexpected places!! They're always playing it on the radio and in shops and in lots of people's houses (who have bought a compilation cd of Christmas songs and who often have not the faintest idea of the musician that crafted it). For me, it's like walking into a room full of strangers and then your eyes, or rather ears, settle on the most wonderful old friend. Familiar and warm and joyful, makes me feel good!! Thanks Mike, yet again!!

Maybe to raise the interest levels of the masses re the genius of Mike, a new Christmas piece of music that will be played alongside In Dulci Jubilo, with trademark guitars and now even a voaloid-thingy???...Silent Night? Nahh.... God Rest You Merry Gentlemen...Hmmm...  The Holly and the Ivy...which to choose???

BTW, on a recent UK television tribute to the late George Best, an immensley talented footballer (also of Irish descent...so this is kind of linked to Mr O...a bit) a section of footage was played with Tubular Bells as backing. It was superb and rather apt, I felt, in being music heard for the first time in the 1970's when George Best was in his prime. It all went together very well.

I would actually rather like that job, of choosing music to fit with programmes on television, but I think I might be a wee bit biased!!! ;)

O, now I hear it. I've heard Good Christian Men Rejoice, but I never recognised the melody before.

It also featured on BBC radio 2 yesterday in a xmas song quiz- listeners had to correctly identify 9 'snippets' of songs, of which In dulci was the last extract...

Actually radio 2 is pretty good at playing M.O, I often hear Moonlight Shadow, and most of his promo interviews take place on there...

As I have worked in retail stores for far too many years, I was thinking how many times I've heard In Dulci Jubilo..

Let's see...one hour looped cd, 9 hour shift, cd starts 5 weeks before Xmas, 18 years...

that's 4050  :O

And that doesn't include listening at home on various compilations.

Mind you, that's easier to live with than 4050 of Slade or Wizzard's Xmas song.

I had no idea it was a Xmas song either.

@ Sentinel Gard, they do play 'Moonlight Shadow' occasionally on MMM and those middle of the road stations. I listen to JJJ and they were having a 'moon' theme once so they played 'Moonlight Shadow'. The DJ said, 'I bet that was the first time you ever heard Mike Oldfield on JJJ and it will be the last'. That really bugged me because while I personally am not a fan of his songs I still appreciate that many people are and that song in particular brought him into the Public arena even moreso than TB, but I still think the songs are in NO WAY indicitive of Mikes 'true' style. If JJJ played excerpts (obviously long instrumental peices are a problem for ANY radio station) from albums like TB, Amarok, SODE and so forth, I have no doubt whatsoever that some of the young fans who listen to JJJ would go, OH MY GOD, this is brilliant, who is this guy!!!!!

Heard In Dulci Jubilo playing in Wilkinsons, IDJ always makes me feel so happy  :).

I remember  hearing IDJ and Portsmouth as a kid, must be between 1976-78, unfortunately back then I didn't know that Mike had so fantastically crafted these tracks.  Up until the release of Blue Peter I always thought of  Mike as "the Tubular Bells guy"  :O , I'm sorry Mike. ( I seem to remember seeing Incantations in record shops too).

I'm wondering if someone had told me that In Dulci Jubilo and Portsmouth were by MO, would I have become a fan of Mike's music earlier on in my life. Yes I would    :) .

Here, we have Halloween, not Christmas to get Oldfield heard. I'll always hear the first part of "Tubular Bells" on the radio then, even if I have to call in a request in order to get it played!

What do you mean???!!!...on second thoughts, don't answer that!

And, Hiawatha, great to hear that the Tubular Bells intro is part of the Halloween celebrations over there, but isn't it a shame that it's associated with such a disturbing film? That has always bothered me, because the music is so beautiful.

(A friend of mine likes having a Halloween party and does insist on putting little plastic spiders in a large bowl full of lime green jelly, it looks disgusting but the kids love removing them and getting completely covered in slime!! Perhaps I'll suggest they do it with the start of Tubular Bells playing in the background!;))

Heh. We take our Oldfield music where we can get it :)

I have say I make the association myself, because at one time I heard it on the radio many times as "Theme for the Exorcist" before I gave all of "Tubular Bells" a serious listen.

I've not even seen the film myself, except to watch a few minutes just to hear where they used "Tubular Bells" in the soundtrack.

For me The Exorcist is less disturbing than The Killing Field's because we know for sure that war does go along that path and thing's like that really happen. The Exorcist is a supernatural horror movie aimed at shocking with intent from almost the begining of the film.

I  agree both films are disturbing, I've watched The Exorcist once, I was alone at the time, and was so scared by it I've never watched it since, I've never really been a fan of horror films.
The Killing Fields makes me cry when I see it, to think these atrocities can and do happen.

Isn't this drifting away from the original topic about In Dulci Jubilo, it's christmas or being more Pagan I celebrate it as Yule, a time of goodwill to others :),   although ideally this goodwill is extended throughout the year not just in December  :) .

i've just seen a trailer for the channel 4 show - i can't see mike being on it. the main theme seems to be to get artistes from past xmas hits and get them to write a new "uber xmas song".

oh well, yet again a master goes un-noticed.

Very true, Moonchildhippy, both films have made their mark in time. Just glad Mike's music is a part of that impression left.

I have never seen the Exorcist either, Hiawatha, and I'm not that curious but I'm sure sometime in my life I will get to see it.

About the UK TV show that may or may not feature Mike, (the part of Olrac's post quoted above) it's just so frustrating to think that every year people have the music of an inspired genius in their midst and they simply are unable to hear or even give it a chance. I believe he deserves recognition. I have really tried to encourage people I know to listen to Mike Oldfield over the years but get the same response to the effect that it's 'OK'. I am, ofcourse,  speechless when I hear that and must admit that now I don't bother. They are missing out. It's probably something you have to discover for yourself anyway. Think I might be way off topic now, sorry.
