Hey guys, found this on YOUTUBE. Its a really rare track of Mike playing for David Bedford. It really is truly stunning material. I think it is some of his most powerful stuff I have ever heard. Have a listen...

Whoever Blinky879 is, he's doing MO a great service by posting some of the rarer tracks onto YouTube.  Every little bit helps, I think, when the average net surfer doesn't know about them.

Instructions for Angels is indeed a stunning track, Mike's completely let loose here; his appearance on David's "Star's End" is a similar example.

:O Really impressive ! Again , Mike shows us that there's no need to play guitar very fast for being a Guitar Hero !

Of course that reminds me of Boxed and Collaborations , i really love Rio Grande and First excursion but i don't know really much about David Bedford music maybe it's time to take an ear on it now .

It's definitely worth it; however, with Bedford's music, I think it's important to know what to look for, because his music is quite varied - sometimes very accessible, at other times highly abstract. I've reviewed his albums on Prog Archives; that should provide a starting point.

Bedford is very cool.  MO's work on the "Instructions For Angels" title track is baffling in it's absence on "Collaborations".  "Collaborations" could have been so much more than what it is.  Pity the wasted opportunity.

Play the first section (up to about 2:30) of "Incantations Part 2" and then "Wanderers Of The Pale Wood Part 2".  Small world, eh?

Instructions For Angels was released a year after Collaborations I think Bassman, hence its absence.I do agree with you in principle though,as I think along with First Excursion it`s one of Mike`s greatest stand out pieces of the time.Plus they`re both so unlike anything he had done before or since really.Which kind of makes you wonder what Mike makes of them today I guess?Personaly I feel it`s an avenue I wish he`d explored a lot more.

@ Dirk.  Yeah, you're right.  I stand corrected.  I keep thinking in my head that "Boxed" came out in 1978.  I don't know why.  Me noodle must be too soggy!  But my larger point was still that "Collaborations" was such a good chance for Virgin to put a couple of other things in that would otherwise have been tricky to track down.  There was still plenty of room for "Froggy" or "Don Alfonso", just to name two.  Still such a shame.

I'm getting Instructions For Angels for xmas.I didn't even realise it existed till someone on here mentioned it.I have Nurses Song With Elephants (very strange but if you can get through the beginning bit of the title track there's a wierd little song at the end on which Mike plays a lovely bass line),Stars End (brilliant if only for Mike contribution),Rime Of The Ancient Mariner (truly brilliant)and The Odysee (probably spelt wrong but great album, again wonderful guitar work on a couple of tracks from Mike and also Andy Summers).Someone told me the title track features Mike on guitar and Bedford on church organ. Can't wait for xmas now.The odd thing is that this was released in 77 at a time when Mike himself wasn't putting out anything much under his own name so it will be interesting to hear.
@Bassman i totally agree that Collaborations could have been so much better.Along with Mike Oldfield's Single, Froggy and Don Alfonso they could have put Spanish Tune and the fabled Pipe Tune on there as well.Collaboration was a short little LP so there would have been plenty of room.
@Tubular Tos i would recommend all of the above LPs with the possible exception of Nurses Song.

Not to keen on the structure of Instructions For An Angel.  However my goodness I forgot how good QE2 sounded. I was singing and dancing at the computer... 'as far wrengo delta cento evarebishow..' whatever the lyrics are that is.  I musn't have heard that album in atleast 10 years.

oh boy how I agree with you, both of these pieces are a stunning use of Mike's sustained guitar sound and a great example of his fantastic ear for hitting that right note.  however you have to agree it isn't really very commercial.  I don't think MOTS would have sold much if it had sounded much like this!  i too would be interested in what Mike thinks about these pieces these days.  Maybe he hates them as bombastic nonsense.

If I remember well, The fabulous IFAngels track was recorded live at Worcester Cathedral. I have the vinyl, but I bought the cd this year, as I like this song such a lot!!! ... and it was very cheap in Amazon.
