Does anyone know if the publication Dark Star is still going?

I still think this site and Mike Oldfield.com are fab, but every now and then it's nice to have a bit of printed paper, don't you think?!!!!! :D

Not really,i used to subscribe to Dark Star, and i always looked forward to the new mag, but,it's just too slow,i used to have to wait for months at a time for the new one, websites are so much better, you get all the latest news the same day it happens, and you get to interact with people about all things Mike.

The Dark Star website is certainly a well designed one (still much, much better than MO.com)  but it seems fairly redundant these days. MO.com doesn't even have a link to it which says it all really, you do get the impression that the relationship isn't great there.

Fanzine's in general just arn't that relevent now that most people have the internet and any number of fans are constructiong very well put together websites. I don't know what will happen to Dark Star in the long run, I guess it must still owe subscribers a few issues so maybe it'll just run down.

Mike's relationship with his fans isn't exactly great anyway despite the fact that a handful of us played Maestro with him. I think he'll need to do more than that to convince some of us that he actualy cares anymore. Though I'm sure underneath it all he does.

I hope it doesn't run down, though I can see it happening.
My point about Dark Star is that it is nice to wait for things. [ like new albums! ] Some things are worth waiting for.

I love the internet, it's immediacy is stunning  (frightening, even) when you stop and think about it, but it is like everything else today - it's fast and it sets a pace.

I can choose to pick up or put down Dark Star- depending on what I'm doing- whereas this internet thing demands that I am planted in front of it! I keep burning the dinner because I get so engrossed in the subjects. I am in big trouble if it happens again!

It's like my feelings on CDs, everything has to happen instantly and be so perfect. Real life just is not like that. Whilst I would hate not to have the internet now, I do still like my bits of paper as well. I must be very old fashioned!!

And perhaps what you say about Mike's relationship with his fans does just come from his nature and fomm being a very private person. I can understand that.

And also on the two webchats in 2002 and 2003 @ BBC Radio 2.

I have the impression that Mike's relationship with his fans can be improved in a certain way that can benefit him in terms of promotional stuff. Many of us have got so nice ideas and some of us have done great imputs on this area, and that could be a interesting point to analyse.

I note that Mike doesn't like to talk about his music to his fans, and fans wanna discuss with him about his music,so there's a problem in here.AFAIK,Mike doesn't like to have an aftershow session, where he can really get in touch with us.Of course there's the personal factor - he's quite too shy - but,it's one of the few chances he has to have real feedback from us.About playing Maestro with him is a cool step, but is not "that thing",you know.IMO,Mike doesn't care with the critics and with the things we say about his music - he creates music for himself, and if we like or not is really doesn't care at all.Getting in touch with his fans seems to be a moment of idolizing him, which is something he doesn't like at all and he gets a bit mad with it.

Reading past Dark Star issues,I've never seen Mike going back on an album, and telling how was the whole process of composing and recording,it seems to be that he doesn't wanna to tell anyone what is like...and is the sort of info most fans wanna know.

Dark Star has done a nice job,but IMHO,there's a lot more to do as the official MO Magazine, approved by Oldfield Music Ltd,to offer more to us,the fans.I've always imagined if a big poll between the fans to see what we want on the mag,as well as to help Mike in a certain way to be well promoted should be done.

Some of my pennies on.

Mike has become a more private person since he had returned to Fanny and got married to her.

Before, things were a bit different in a certain way - I remember that Mike took his 3 kids with Sally Cooper on the Then and Now Tour, and on the Dark Star Tour Diary, there were some pics of them avaliable on line to see.

Who knows whats going on? There are a lot of things in Mike's world that leave me utterly bewildered, he does seem to bring things upon himself. I was reading back over some articles released round about the Amarok period the other day and I did begin to question his annoyance with virgin in that era. He seemed to go on endlessly about how badly they were manging him then but I don't really see any big difference between then and now. He's obviously a difficult artist to work with for various reasons (he's as much admitted so himself over the years to varying degrees) He possibly doesn't inspire people to put in effort for him if he doesn't do certain things himself.
Mike's arguably a much more marginalised figure in popular music now than he was then and he's done a lot to help himself become this, and i'm not just talking about the quality of his recent music.

Does he care? Obviously not. Should we care? I'm not sure I do anymore, though it is sad.

Last I heard was "Dark Star" was still going (I am a member) They had decided to only issue a magazine when there was new news or interesting articles. Membership is usually for 4 issues so no one will miss out. They do have a email news service for new "breaking" news.
