Hi,

A few months ago a friend of mine wrote a poem, and asked me to make a song of it, vocals with piano. Well, one should always try something new, so I gave it a shot. There's just one problem: I don't know anybody who can sing. :/
I've uploaded two files, one with only piano and one with my terrible voice on it, for the ones who are interested in singing it. :) Please don't laugh with me, I've got a terrible voice. :)

Song with piano only
Song with voice (not recommended I you don't wanna sing it yourself)

Here are the lyrics (written by my friend, Kevin):

Quote

The first song I wrote in my life

is it true that I see the rain, but feel the sun when you're near?
is it true I can't stop faking, but when I'm with you I'm awake?
that I hear the music from the moment my eyes find you?
The sweet melodies of dashboard and something corporate
That it was because of you I began to feel it?
It is true because I really like you, and I'm already starting to miss you

*Are you disappointed if I call you?
If you keep me awake at night?
That I see your face in the things I like?
Will you be scared when I'll be with you?
Please don't

why is it so that I live when you smile at me?
you were the first one ever who liked my songs
it gave me energy, it gave me weakness
Why do I get the tears in my eyes when I'm thinking of you?
why do I see always and everywhere you're grey-green eyes?
looking into me, killing me
It's because I really like you, and goddamn I miss you

*Are you disappointed because I like everything about you?
your hair, your face, your hands, your smartness, your wishes, your dreams,
even the ground on which you walk
please don't,
please don't hate me for writing this

Do you know why I chose the most perfect girl?
the most beautiful, the smartest, and the sweetest?
Of course you know, because it's you
Are you going to forget me?
and then ask: Kevin who?
you know how I feel about the most beautiful girl in the world
You know I like you,
that I love you

*Are you disappointed if I want to be your friend forever?
That I'll be alone in a corner watching you
watching you and your soulmate
and me writing my heart down
please don't,
please don't hate me for loving you

Thx for your attention. :)

One more thing: has anybody got some spare webspace? I'm running low on it, actually.

You've not chosen the simplest vocal melody there, have you? ;)

The various twists in the melody, combined with the speed, would I think mean that only certain singers would be able to do it justice. Noel Coward, perhaps...
Nice piano, though.

If you want to try more singing yourself (no reason not to! ), you might find it helpful to think down as you go up higher, driving the notes down more into your chest - it'll make the notes sound a lot stronger.

I'm sat here now playing a bass part along to it - doesn't sound bad

@ bugular tell: good to hear you like the piano! It's obvious that that's the thing I've put the most effort in. I had to listen much to 'emo-music' (the style my friend likes) to put some influences in it for this song. So it's good to here it wasn't in vain. :)

@Korgscrew: c'mon, do you really think that voice could do something listenalbe?! I'm the kind of person who would be insulted by the jury of the preselection of 'Idols'! Anyway, I'll remember your little trick.
About the vocal melody: it took some freedom with it, and didn't give to much attention to the practical stuff. I thought the fact that the vocal melody kinda doubles the piano melody would compensate it. Well, I was wrong. :)
And who is Noel Coward?
And you didn't happen to record your bass part by coincidence? :) I'm interested in what you would do with that. Don't feel forced, though.

AFAIK Noel Coward is a songwriter/composer/singer from the 1930s. I think he wrote lots of stage musicals.
And don't worry about your singin'. I know people who sing far worse than that. :)

Come on! :)  Having a terrible voice is no excuse for not trying! I forced a couple of friend (and even my mother! ) to sing it, so you won't be the only silly one!

Come on, give it a try!

Sorry, I've been busy with a new job and migrating to a new computer at home...

Of course, your piano playing is very nice, as are the melodies. I'm not too terribly crazy about the lyrics, and I think that you may be trying to stuff a little too much into the lines, but I think it might just be my general dislike for love songs featuring lots of superlatives.

As for the singing... I should imagine that an educated musician such as yourself might be able to improve fairly quickly... just remember to stay relaxed and not to force out the notes. Try matching the pitch of some scales played on piano to figure out your comfortable range, and then practise some common intervals.

I'm not an incredibly well-trained singer myself, but I may be able to pull it off if you can't find anyone else to, although, like I said,  the lyrics just aren't quite my "thing."

Many superlatives? I count only six of them. I've heard song with more than that!

But yeah, if I wouldn't know the guy who wrote this and didn't know his situation, I probably would dislike it too. :) Those damn cheesy love songs! :D

It's nice to see you like my piano, but I'm surprised you (and others) put so much confidence in my singing!

Anyway, thx for the comments!

Well, if a man convinces himself he can't sing, then he won't be able to. Anyone who can understand the concept of pitch and who can voice vowels and consonants, and who isn't tone-deaf, can sing. Some may be better than others, and some may need more work than others. More than perhaps playing a given instrument, singing requires confidence.

If you want to do it, then practise. I'm assuming that English isn't your native language, which may explain why some of you consonants are muffled and slurred. Work on matching individual pitches, and then work on scales and intervals. Singing along to songs is good too, but sometimes structure can help out a lot.

I only counted five superlatives, but in context, five too many. Yes, I have been, and most people have been, at the end of a relationship such as this, and I could have easily written something like this. I don't want to triviliase his experience, of course, because it's crushing to the individual, but I've always felt that a song like this could so easily  be turned into something like... I don't know, the Police's "Every Breath You Take," which was written like that intentionally. Your friend may need this sort of an outlet right now, and I hope he feels better soon.

Music,... makes everyone sing this song, even me... And you'd rather fight the Balrog of Moria (Lord of the Rings...) then hear me singing, believe me!!!!

and: Music,... , i'll ask that girl again if she wants to sing. At least someone with a nice voice... :)  (joke)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its very very hard to put music around lyrics, only a few can do it and pull it off,

i work the other way, jam and sing bulls#it lyrics ,

then I work on what i have got and add the serious lyrics after.
