This board seems very quiet these days.  Has anyone else noticed the same thing?

General Discussion gets a few posts, but the other forums are very quiet indeed.

Where is everybody?  :O

Yes it is. It may be partly a seasonal thing - and may change as Autumn sets in. But also - I can't speak for anyone else, but I find I don't really have very much to say these days about MO that I haven't already said, and there's precious little news about him to comment on, so ....

I look forward to the Book, to be honest, i dont really read at all, so for something a s big scale as this biog to come out is pretty cool.

Having said that, the new album looks more and more promising with all these new talks about it....

and it is good when people can have fun and enjoy a forum like this. i have always loved this forum. And fights are very rare! Other places i know, like a pink floyd forum. (its very good) but very often there can be some fights about gilmour and waters. Who is pink floyd????
and some can  :(  get mad... he he
but there are not allowed to keep going of course, but after all..

As other folks say there will always be the odd quiet spell. I am more of a lurker than poster (0.03 posts per day ;-) but have a few questions that have been bubbling over the past year or so that I want to post as topics sometime. I do feel there is more discussion to be had about Mikes fabulous music (as some of the posts in General every now and then continually prove). I'm also really looking forward to the biography which I hope will ignite lots of thought and discussion.

Got to add a note of thanks to the admins who keep this place going and under control. Thanks!

Speaking of which, where is our only admin?

I don't think Olivier even drops by that much. There used to be many contributions of fan art and tabs throughout the whole of tubular.net but now it seems that the forums are the only place with life.

It's also worthy of note that many of the members who I have come to know on MSN have all left here and sadly cut all their ties with Mike's music. In fairness though I guess we all have to move on.

Maybe Mike's musical turn of direction will rekindle the fire?

I think a lot of people have just generally lost interest in him. To the ears of a lot of his fans he hasn't released a good album in a very, very long time and a lot of people have indeed just moved on to other, perhaps better things. Its only a very small handful of devotees who are about here now which is sad but not surprising.

At the centre of all this of course is Mike his music and his fans relationship with that music. I've always thought its a bit of a shame that the internet and these forums have come into existence at what is possibly the tail end of his career, though he's not that old I guess. Had this place been about in, say, the early 90's it would have been quite an amzingly different place, as indeed it was when I first joined shortly before Tres Lunas was released.

Over the years there have indeed been many, very heated debates but its funny that that sort of thing isn't going on as much, or even at all, and that this place just seems dull now because of it. I always enjoyed a healthy well thought out argument and kind of got tired of the 'thou shalt bad mouth ANY of Mike's  career' attitude put about by some people. Whats the point in these forums if you can't have a healthy debate? I think a fair few people have been chased away from these forums for 'daring' to have an opinion and 'daring' to express it. The old argument of 'don't contribute here if don't have anything good to say' has now come to fruition. L+S really was the last straw for a lot of fans, whats the point in contributing if all there is to talk about how bad most of Mike's recent stuff has been, which is obviously what a lot of people think.

And then of course there is Mike who is less than hands on with his relationship  to us. Which is fine of course and I respect that he's just not the sort of artist who is close or has ever been particularly close to his fan base. But I do think that hasn't helped him over the last few years. He seems a remote figure and people get the impression, rightly or wrongly, he just doesn't care, he's always been fairly de-humanised to the eyes of some of his fans, something which isn't fair to him I don't think but never the less something he's helped create.

There has always been a big problem with the fans expectations of Mike and the quality of his music verses Mike's opinion of the quality of his music.  He thinks the Millennium Bell is a career high light yet his fans think its his worst album. He obviously liked L+S enough to think it was worthy of release, some fans swore they would never buy another album by him again after hearing it. Its not a great situation for an artist to be in and these boards have now come to represent the apathy there clearly is.
Its a bit of a Catch 22 situation in a funny way. Its to much for fans to expect every album to sound like or be as good as Amarok or Ommadawn yet its to much for Mike to expect them to happily follow him into chill out/eletronica and expect them to like it let alone kick up a fuss about why they dislike it. Any artist like Mike who teaches their fans to grow up appreciating great music of one kind should not be to surprised or indeed pissed of (as Mike possibly is) that they're not 'cool' or 'trendy' or young enough to follow them into, well and album like L+S for example.

So at the end of the day I do think Mike, both fairly and unfairly, has lost the respect of a lot of his fans, thats why a lot of people have left here. Whats left to say at this moment? This book,if a reality, could recapture peoples understaning of him as an artist and a human being, which may come as a suprise to those who still think to this day he some sort of divine creature.

some of what you are saying is right, but i dont share it 100% of course.
But..
Last year at this time it was quite good traffic. We where waiting for the new album and many hated it.
I was not one of them, and i know many other liked it.
Quite many fans like the music (not what he plays, and how ect... )
Im one of them. When i sit down to hear a new album i want to hear something that touch me. The way mike's music touch me is hes sound, guitar and how the songs get the life. He makes me feel something and i just love it.
On Light and shade he really did. My only complain is why he did make a dobbel album. He could drop some of the songs and either take the bonus songs into. Like Closer could 100% sure been replaced by pres de toi, and slipstream could been deleted.
But i would screamed after the dropped songs anyway so why not have them now he he..
I think this album was a quite experiments. He tried, but maybe failed..
Just have a look on earth moving.. I wonder what everybody would say about that if it had the release today. I would not be happy.
And i wonder what he thinked about making Amarok. Just one track album 60 min. A quite experiments thing to dear to try i must say. I think Amarok is hes most brave album.

All i know is that i have not lost my interest in him at all. I loo inside here everyday many times. Im really looking forward to his album that we have to wait for. It is worth waiting i think this will be a kind of new really good album in a strange way. Don't know why i have that thought, but he is now leaving the chill period and this will maybe open a new world of sounds, way he do the music, the atmosphere ect..
Im not waiting for a new ommadawn.. Maybe a new name of the place he live now. Like he did with hergest ridge (who knows??)

This will anyway open a new place of music he have not give us in years. So then i think most of his fans is giving he a new chance. If he fail now, he will lost many fans.
And with help, we have dvd release, now night proms tour and a upcomming book that 100% makes his fans curious.
So no, i dont think he have lost so many fans really. They are just not here now..
Nothing is really happening at the moment...

There's more to these boards than *just* the music, of course.  There's also the sense of community and the coming together of like-minded people with a common interest. Just my 2p's worth... :)

Aye nah ure right. Mike is obv the main reason of the forum but the runrig one is 90% people getting to know each other and what they get up to and that. Like the photo, where u live threads. makes it more interesting i think .

I must say that I haven't really encountered this. There are hundreds of unfavourable responses to much of Mike's music to be found in this forum (I've contributed some of them myself), but although (of course) many of those have been hotly debated both ways, I can't imagine that anyone could be scared off for daring to have an opinion?

If someone says 'Tr3s Lunas is rubbish', then it's very likely to produce a response from me in disagreement; equally, if someone says that Amarok is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, then I'm likely to suggest they're being overzealous. I think L&S is disturbingly vacuous. Either way, I feel free to state my opinion without being chased away.

No, I think the other reason is more likely: things are just not very exciting at the moment.

I don't by any means think its the main reason people don't contribute much these days but there have unquestionably been instances of people being bullied for daring to express an opinion, no matter how controversial (Ian Too springs to mind, some people here wanted to burn him at the stake) But I wouldn't say it happens a lot and it certainly hasn't happened recently.

As you say Alan there's just not much happening in Mike's career just now plus there's a lot of fan apathy towards him these days. It'll probably change if this book ever comes out and especially if he ever tours again.

yeh but Ian Too wasn't just bagging one or two of Mikes albums, he was saying really horrible things about Mike as a person, I have no respect for him anymore etc etc. Everyone has a right to an opinion, but this is a Mike Oldfield forum and if you can't stand Mike anymore, surely you should just quietly move on to something else. I still come in here every day as always and have a look around but if nothing is being posted then I have nothing to contribute. How are you going Alan?

In fact I have been spending a lot more time in another forum since this one went quiet, it's a Fishing site but I only visit the Photography forum which has excellent bi-weekly competitions and a fun photoshop editing game you can play. I try hard to be objective but just by the huge amount of time I spend in there and number of posts I make I have pissed off a few people (been accused of taking over) and now 4 people have quit, (3 are women and 2 of them are menopausal, they hate me I tell you), of which I had a small degree of involvement. One of them even took my photo from my profile and defaced it and posted it on another site, how bloody rude. When I found out about it I threatened to sue them and it was quickly removed but I was really angry because it was one of the moderators who did it, how irresponsible. Anyway, my point is, I want to come home!

Does anyone remember 'Shine' (Vanessa from Brazil), she had a run in with Inkanta a while back because she thought she was a male, and after I did too she thought we were now best buddys and started writing to me. She told me about this excellent forum called 'Paisley Days' for hippies where they chat about everything but it only has about 40 members so doesn't move very fast. I posted saying I loved this site but would it be okay if I tried to encourage more people to join and the admin said, "not if they are anything like Vanessa, she is not right in the head". Haven't seen her in there since, she must have been banned for admin to make such a harsh statement.

Anyway, will write a HUGE report after the MO convention and concert on Saturday, I can't wait and there are going to be a few surprises I am not allowed to talk about yet. So tune in next week.

A very excited Tracy.

I agree I feel that  a minority of the posts on here have gone too far down the slippery slope, attacking Mike (and sometimes other TubularBoard  members)  personally.   Mike's personal life is not something I wish to pry  into warts and all, after all we're all human and we  all make mistakes from time to time.  Yes I do feel much of Mike's emotions is reflected in his music, after all I feel it would be impossible to compose or play music if devoid of emotions.
Saying that I'm looking forward to reading Mike's autobiography, but I do feel there's a HUGE difference between attacking Mike based on vicious rumours, and say reading a biography or the transcript of an interview.

I've never had a problem with being shouted down or feeling chased away just for expressing an opinion, I do much prefer the original Tubular Bells to Tubular Bells 2003,but equally I can accept that some fans will prefer TB2003 to the original.
  :) .
My guess that the board is a bit quiet at the mo is, I guess so many of us have busy lives and other commitments, it's not always possible to find the time to look/post here regularly.
There is often a flurry of activity after say an album or DVD release,or Mike gives an interview.   With the NOTP Concerts and the autobiography in the pipeline I'm sure activity will pick up. ;)
