Since reading Changeling, I have started noticing things that relate to the book - various musical connections if you like, in the song titles or music itself.

Here are a couple of examples of what I found so far....

The title "The Inner Child" on TBIII
- Mike's references to his own inner child

The shouts of "Out! Demon, out!" during TBIII
- Mike wanting to get rid the 'demon' within (his own or his mothers?)

The telephone rining in Amarok followed by the Piltdown Man's shouts
- his hatred of phones, due to his family constantly being disrurbed in the night when he was young, with his father receiving emergency call-outs.

There will be more.. anybody else noticed any of these kind of connections?

Number 1 and 3 I find very much possible. "Out Demons Out" could just as well be a reference to the fact that the original TB was used in the Exorcist. Isn't that what Max Von Sydow says in the movie?

@ larstangmark - I agree with Alex and I don't agree with you about number two. :) The whole of TBIII was inspired by Mike being on Ibiza and getting his own fears (his personal demons) out of his body. "Outcast" is the beginning of the exorcism, in FAtC he succeeds in it. :)

Well, I can be wrong. I'm not too familiar with TB3 actually.

But now I remember where I heard the phrase "Out, demons out!" before. Sometime in the late 60s there was a "peace march" towards the pentagon. A band called The Fugs were there as some kind of spokespersons for the hippie movement. Under the leadership of the Fugs the whole crowd chanted "Out, demons out!" in order to make the Pentagon levitate (!). The Edgar Broughton band later made a renditon of this "song" and did the "Out, demons out!"-routine on stage. Interestingly, drummer (and brother of Edgar) Steve Broughton played drums on the original TB!

"Far Above the Clouds" has to be Mike's most powerful and driving piece of music to date... When that first huge bell thunders in, it sends a shiver down the spine, every time. If anything, "Far Above the Clouds" represents Mike's musical zenith as far as Tubular Bells is concerned. The guitar solo is awe-inspiring, as the notes scream and cry.

That track is just breathtaking and moving - almost like an emotional and spiritual 'release'.

...and Far Above the Clouds.

I only discovered that bit recently on the headphones. It's near the beginning and just before the little girl starts singing "fa...fa...fa..."
I always thought it was a drum sample, but it's not!

AlexS, I thought the same about "Outcast", but your points about "Inner Child" and the ringing phone in Amarok hadn't occurred to me. Very interesting.

In FAtC there isn't the whole phrase. It's just a repeated sample of "Out", which, in the contest of FAtC, sounds very much like "Ouch". At least to me. :D

I see more clear connections in song titles:

Saved by a bell
Crises
Gimme Back
Shadow on the wall
Man in the rain
The Voyager

Mike
