Japan may be uninhabitable soon. Where do they all go? Just curious as to why no discussion on this subject.

Crying to heaven
And will our voices be heard
Or will they break Like the wind

The scale of the disaster leaves you speechless! I watched a lot of the footage last weekend ... of that horrendous tsunami.

A journalist's accolade to the Japanese people here -

"Grateful as they are for outside help, it became clear that the Japanese don't really need it - for these stoical, self-disciplined, highly organised and resourceful people are accustomed to managing on their own. In every side-street I found groups of people toiling almost like worker ants, despite the seemingly overwhelming tragedy they have faced. They swept, scoured, siffed, wheeled barrows, made neat piles - ever smiling resignedly as they went about their tasks."

:/I didn't started a new topic but talked about it in another thread !

Yes , ..." speechless" !!!

But i think we should be like Japanese people is ! Be calm , be worthy and we also hope that the enginneers succeed to confine this " b...t " of radioactivity !

I've seen here in French tv this morning ( 12:30 am ) they managed to connect an high voltage cable to run the pumps and cool the fuels bars !

So there's hope !!

I like Japanese culture , they are so ... " a quiet people " !...

All I can say is this:

If the world only would realize that it's time to turn away from this technology of hell named nuclear power as fast as possible and to put all forces into the development of renewable energy instead! There still seems to be a big lack of consciousness worldwide about that subject.

Money rules the world, I know that, and the big energy companies deal with it of course - and with our health and security!

:(

If you want to make a case in favour of renewable energy, you'd probably have a stronger point attacking oil and coal plants -- the impact and danger that those represent are much bigger.

Nuclear plants are, in a way, like airplanes: one disaster it's all it takes to take a big number of lives and make people scared to death of those things, swearing against them and cursing their existence, and "fear of flying" is generally acceptable and understood. But cars are a much more dangerous, harmful, lethal and disastrous means of transportation, and nobody really seems to care about it, and "fear of cars" is seen as downright strange.

Yes, it's hard to disagree with you there, Sir M.

What is it with you and cars, Musty?

I'm not scared of cars (unlike Thom Yorke) and I depend on buses and road transportation pretty much in a daily basis, and I'm actually in the process of obtaining a license. I'm just aware of the risks they represent: the statistics are absurd. Besides, I live in a town in which dozens of cyclists participating in the absolutely pacific local "Critical Mass" movement were violently thrown around like rag dolls by a disgruntled driver. It freaks me out, but not to the point of paranoia or fobia. I just think it's fair to put things in perspective.

Even though I hate Randall Munroe's comic, he has made a quite handy and informative chart about radiation levels and the proportions of the Fukushima accident in relation to other common measures. The link
