My question is simple: Do Oldfield fans listen to jazz? Mikes music might have very little incommon with that style musically, but still, I've been a mike oldfield fanatic for a year and a half now and during that time i've gotten more and more into jazz, especially John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and also some newer jazz like Martin Medeski & Wood.

Well, I was never a real jazz fan.
But, like Mike Oldfield's music, jazz can be more interesting to listen to than standard 'rock & pop'. Especially when you're listening to the radio. So I find myself switching to jazz (& classics) stations more & more often, recently.

I like jazz...I've even tried to play jazz, with varying levels of success wink

There are a couple funk-jazz fusion groups I like a lot (those are Winston Morson's 'Off the cuff' and Paul Carmichael's 'Flight', although I would be suprised if anyone out there has heard of them...).
On a more Mike Oldfield related note, I saw Courtney Pine and his band a little while ago - really enjoyable, with some great playing. he's got all the showmanship sorted as well...

If you look into the background of a lot of the musicians who have worked with Mike, you will find that many of them are jazz musicians - the african drummers on Ommadawn are mostly jazz players now, it seems, and a lot of the session players he used later on play on the jazz circuit.

i believe i've seen mike saying somewhere, that the only guitarists that play fast/good enough be perform live with mike, are jazz guitarists.

and i agree on what Carsten wrote.

Hmmm.... listening to Jazz is sometime not very easy... i'm not really fan of, and i don't listen very often... i think my ears are not very good listener wink) When it's too complex and I don't ear the main thema anymore during a long solo, I don't like it so much...
But the fact is that i'm listening more and more 'complex' classic ... and somethime jazz wink
With all those kind of jazz (bebop, free, acid, fusion, big band, classical, dodecaphonic things), could we think that each form of FREE way to compose and play music are jazz ??? ... just a question though wink

I could tell you that although I think there´s not really a direct connection between jazz and what Mike does, there's a couple of fusion groups and soloists that I enjoy, as well as Pat Metheny -excelent guitarist- Scott Cossu, Special EFX, Dan Balmer -another great guitarist- or many others.

In my opinion jazz music is far from Mike's although he tried some approaches like:

- Charleston (Platinum)
- Tubular Bells live (Exposed)
- Music from the Balcony

and I think few more.
