Because the Jon Lord thread has degenerated, because of me but not only, I thought it fitting to start another one to honor him, and to share with all of you my favourite memories of him in the form of YouTube videos. The two Concertos below (Group & Orchestra from 1969 and Durham from 2007) are the full performances, so if you've never seen them from start to finish be prepared for quite an experience.

I'll also add a Deep Purple song I really love. Jon Lord wrote the music of this. According to what I've read and seen, he intended it to be operatic, almost like "April". Ritchie Blackmore wrote some lyrics which toned it down a bit. Never mind, it's still a masterpiece.

By the way, do you think that the planned performance of his Concerto for Group and Orchestra which was to take place in September (which would have starred him, Bruce Dickinson, Joe Bonamassa et al.) will still take place? I hope it will, it would really be a great way to celebrate him and his music.

I have several, if you really care to know. But I don't want to discuss them.

Okay. But then Matt will kick my ass outta here for going off-topic.

- I am sick at heart. Really. Not because I am in love but because I have an enlarged right ventricule.
- I am myopic. I have to wear contact lenses and, when I don't wear 'em, thick glasses.
- I am passionate about my own opinions.
- I have a tendency to disagree with others.
- I have a tendency to contradict others.
- I love music. ALL music with no distinction.

I could go on forever but these are the main ones.

Ugo…..I don’t think that Matt will do that!

I respect your honesty, and without meaning to be patronizing, I sympathise with your problems. We are all flawed, and we all have our troubles, but we should also apply a little tolerance and humility when interacting with others.  Disagreement and contradiction are negative qualities!

actually most of the tracks from "before I forget" are really lovely and probably my favourites. but the last two solo albums are great as well. And then of course there is Sarabande - a classic

Thanks for replying. I agree about Sarabande, it's fantastic. I've never heard Before I Forget, but I just checked it out on Wikipedia and saw that Elmer Gantry, Tony Ashton and Sam Brown are all in there. I like all of them, so it sounds promising. I'm also very fond of Pictured Within, as you can see from the videos I posted above. It seems like that album is not very appreciated by longtime Deep Purple fans... I know various people who are, and they all hate it. I don't. :)

The only time I got to see Jon Lord was the "Perfect Strangers" Knebworth gig (which had it's own small world story for me, but another time for that).

But he seems to have been a genuine man, a minor classic composer(as in not Mozart but better than many) and gave us some great tunes.

The answer is 42 - but what is the question?

Before I forget has some normal pop/rock songs on it as well as some instrumentals - be careful what version you get as the original album was enhanced some years later with some extra tracks which are really quite lovely

I've not been back to a festival since Knebworth with Purple.  My did it rain!

I've looked for the CD on online shops - couldn't find either version. Amazon.co.uk has it, but used and at a very high price - I'm not spending £100+ for a 1982 CD, Jon Lord or not. :D Anyway, I was lucky enough to download from somewhere a FLAC version, including the bonus tracks, but I'll have to cut it myself as the cue sheet is all wrong (as usual)...

@ Andy: what are your favourite Jon Lord pieces/songs?
