I was given a voucher for my birthday to spend in a music shop. This was a real novelty in these www.days - to go & choose a cd - a physical object not just a tiny picture on a screen, whilst at the same time soaking in the atmosphere created by high quality sound systems. I was not in HMV or Virgin Meagastore btw, but a small local audio store. It was great!
After a while I decided to look for Karl Jenkins, he had been mentioned here on tubular.net and I knew very little of his work. The assistant ( again, a real novelty, a person who actually speaks & helps you) showed me what was in stock and then mentioned the new Platinum Collection. At £14.99 this was a pretty good start & I was able to buy the new Air album too.
So far I like what I hear very much. The collection is The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace, Requiem & Adiemus. It's such a lot to take in, but repeated playing is revealing more & more. I won't go into great detail but I do recommend a listen to anyone who has not yet encountered his work.
One track, Dies Irae, is just amazing and I play it again & again. I think I am right in saying it means day of anger or rage. But I don't feel that at all, lots of energy, yes, and strong feelings. I feel there's so much to discover and I am now more than ever looking forward to Mike's new album if he is going to be involved with this composer in any way. It feels right. And the fact that it will be orchestrated means it will forever be available to many, many people who take music seriously. This could be the cleverest move Mike has made yet. Hope so. It might make people sit up and take more notice & think of him for more than the Exorcist theme. We know already and are with him all the way.
The Air album is good too, it's growing on me, but it has been rather pushed to one side because of the Karl Jenkins music. A bit unfair really. I need to give it it's own space. bee
