I know I should really try and find a Kate Bush forum for this but folks here are so knowledgebl;e and some of them seem to Like Kate Bush so...

Does anyone know what instrument plays during the chorus, overlaid on Kates voice during the repeat of her singing "Ooooh - he's here again". The chorus is sung twice during the song and she sings that phrase twice each time. On both occasions she sings with piano/strings the first time and then the second time is joined by what instrument? French horn?

I've been listening to the Kick Inside quite a bit recently and love that track. The arrangement is slowly becoming clear to me and that little segment works so well I'd love to know how it is constructed!

Cheers

Matt

As far as I can hear, yes, it's a French horn. But on the first chorus it sounds like she's singing "Oooh-oooh-oooh" etc., on the same melody as "Oooh, he's here again", on top of the French horn - or, to put it another way, it sounds like she's vocally doubling the French horn's line. :)

Sounds like a french horn to me too. A few weeks ago, I put together a mix CD and dropped this track onto it, and have been listening to it a lot lately. It is probably my 2nd favorite Kate Bush song.

The point of trivia about "The Man with the Child in his Eyes" is that the orchestration/production is by Andrew Powell: the same guy who did the orchestrations in the Alan Parsons Project's best albums.

Didn't he arrange all the orchestral parts on the album? :) IMHO all of the tracks he worked on (including, obviously, the huge hit "Wuthering Heights") sounds very, very, very good, and way ahead of their time.

@ Hiawatha - you certainly know this better than me :) - does he currently play keyboards with Parson's Live Project? He played on the excellent AP Live disc, I don't know whether he's still after Mr. Parsons or not... :)

I would guess that Powell, as a producer and someone who does orchestrations, did arrange the orchestral parts of the album.

I know nothing about the Parsons Live Project. However, I looked up your question and found this page:

http://www.theavenueonline.info/site1/bios/powell.htm

"In 1994, Andrew joined Alan Parsons on Alan’s first post-Project album. In addition to arranging and performing on "Try Anything Once", he also wrote four of the songs. Powell also toured with The Alan Parsons Live Project. "

He also worked on Parsons' "The Time Machine". I have no idea what the current status of the Parsons Live Project is. 1994 is twelve years past.

Thanks for starting this thread Matt, yesterday I listened to my entire Kate Bush collection in one go, I think I have all of them except The Red Shoes, inc the Boxed set which has her first 6 albums plus 2cds of B sides. If only all boxed sets followed this format. Plus I have Aerial and The Whole Story.

But for today it has to be all Mike to get me in the flow for the Convention and Concert on Saturday. I'm listening to the ones I listen to the least, which is all the albums with songs on.

Thanks for the replys, French Horn it is...

I am starting to discover Kate Bush (only three albums so far: first, last and Lionheart). Any recommendations from you folks would be appreciated since you seem to like the same tracks as I do (and also like Mike Oldfield).

I am listening to Lionheart at the moment. Love "WOW" except for the rather naff synth trumpet during the chorus. I see Andrew Powell is the producer on that albuma s well, shame he couldn't find some real brass!

I love that particular synth trumpet, actually! My favorite track by her is "Cloudbusting".

Is that "Cloudbusting" video on DVD anywhere?

but there could be a DVD of hers with that one that I'm not familiar with ...

Cloudbusters are actual devices, you know. However, they look no where near as elaborate as the one in the video.

I used to think that 'The Kick Inside' was her masterpiece, but the 'Hounds of Love' album was a slow burner, and now I consider it not just her best album, but one of the most astounding albums I know by anyone. 'Cloudbusting' is indeed a magnificent performance on it, among other magnificent performances.

I've been told that The Red Shoes is her worst album which is why I haven't bought it yet. Does anyone have it? Is it any good? I have 7 albums, is that all of them minus The Red Shoes? Although I do love Rocket Man, don't know any of the other tracks.

I found "Red Shoes" to be almost unlistenable. Rather like that certain pair of Alan Parsons Project albums.

Hi all,

thanks for the replies. I got hold of "Hounds of Love" but have to admit it hasn't done anything for me yet. Maybe as Alan D mentioned it'll be a slow burner and it'll grow on me. I'll probably avoid Red Shoes for now and take pot luck on the next one based on what happens to be on offer...

Regarding videos, I was trying to thnk through which videos I can remember of hers. Unfortunately the song and video that keep coming to mind I think was a spoof (Not the Nine O'clock news?) - something about people looking at her body. Anyone remember that?

Cheers

Matt
