Sometime ago I bought "Joy of a toy", which I think is a really good album. If anyone here is familiar with Kevin's back catalogue I would be grateful for some advice about what to buy next.

Greetings

I've got the Joy of a toy Lp as well, and it's brilliant! The songs seem like small fairytales.
The one you could buy next is maybe Shooting at the Moon. Mike actually plays on that (bass, I believe) and it's really nice. He also has an album called Bananamour, which is very good, according to some, but I can't judge, because I don't own that one myself!

Thanks! I'll go for Shooting at the Moon next.
I listened to Joy of a Toy again tonight. Eleonor's Cake is a standout track. Beautiful orchestration from David Bedford.

'Shooting at the Moon' is an excellent album if you enjoy Kevin's penchant for the typically English and eccentric approach to rock verging on the avant-garde. Mike contributes some blistering guitar and bass as a member of 'The Whole World Band'.

'Whatervershebringswesing' is another great album - Mike's work on the eponymous track is fabulous. Apparently, as the story goes, Kevin and the rest of the band were busy getting hammered down the local and a bored Mike decided to literally cut the track himself bar Mr Ayers' vocals.

Another Ayers' classic is 'The Confessions of Dr Dream (and other stories)' now available on CD as part of the 3 albums onto 2CD set 'Didn't Feel Lonely Till I Thought of You' - well worth the asking price for 'Everybody’s Sometime And Some People’s All The Time Blues' featuring a sublime Oldfield guitar solo. Check it out here if you're interested.

That's a very good idea, to get that 2cd album. Thinking of it, I only have two of his albums and it's time for more! I got 4 albums by David Bedford, and I like them, but I think that Kevins music is maybe a little more interesting. Tom Newman is also a favourite of mine. His Fine old Tom lp is nice, but his The Hounds of Ulster album is in my top 5 list of favourite albums ever!! So I feel that one's really essential to any Oldfield fan who likes the style of Amarok, Ommadawn, Hergest Ridge. Ooops, I sound like a salesman here ;) . That was not intended :D .

I have Bananamour and Shooting at the moon.  Bananamour is better in my opinion but Mike ain't on it im afraid - actually it's brilliant - get Bananamour!!

So if you you feel a little glum,
To Hergest Ridge you should come.

I got Shooting at the Moon yesterday. I really like it and I'm glad to say that it's even better than Joy of a Toy. There are really experimental parts, which was a bit of a surprise. One of the avant-garde jams (Pisser Dans un Violon) features a very familiar guitar phrase from Mike. Where did he use that later?
