due to the motorbike's accident he had two weeks ago in london, he has had to cancel  'the ragpicker's dream' european tour. it was planned to start in three weeks time starting in lisboa. in spain he was going to come to madrid, zaragoza and badalona... a pity.

i saw him in the very early 90s and i have to say it was a quite enjoyable concert... amazing sound quality, though imo his performance usually lacks a bit of feeling.

hope he soon recovers from that.

I was very sad to hear about Mark's accident, but happy that he will recover given time, shame about the tour being cancelled, but broken ribs do take some time to get over, and he broke 6 of them. But i have to really strongly disagree with you Maria(most of the time i agree with your comments)Mark Knopfler can never be said to play with a lack of feeling, there is no guitar player on the planet with more feeling than Mark, including Mike Oldfield, even though Mike has lots of feeling in his playing, examples:"Local Hero Live"
"Bothers in Arms"!!!
"Why Worry"

Off topic: there is a guitar passage during The Lake strangely similar to the main melody in Local Hero. :)

inspite of the fact i regard mark knopfler among the best guitarists ever, it’s true that this is what i feel when i listen to his guitar... it’s not that his music doesn’t touch me… ‘going home’ or ‘irish boy’ or ‘brothers in arms’ do touch me, but in general, his playing hardly makes me come out in goose pimples… with knopfler i have the same feeling as with satriani, for me another top one, ‘friends’ or ‘crystal planet’ are highly powerful, i’m just now listening to the live version of ‘crystal planet’ (‘live in san francisco’) and it’s damn… good. satriani’s got an amazing technique and he proves it also playing the classical guitar but…
they seem to me… “colder” than mike, or could be they reach me less than mike’s guitars… i’m not ashamed about saying that ommadawn even makes me cry and the same for the second part of tubular bells, among others… there are high amounts of emotion he’s able to pass on through his guitar… it’s something like satriani or knopfler hold a guitar and make wonders with it, but the sound of mike’s guitars is really his voice or his brush and colours when paints landscapes…

could be a matter of personal taste, maybe it’s just that for some reason i feel more identified with oldfield’s music… but i think the listener’s feeling (apart from the own experiences) comes also from the performer’s attitude… i’ve been in front of two different classical guitarists, with more or less the same skill level,  performing the same piece of music and the attitude guiding their hands makes it different…
knopfler’s gig made me enjoy a lot his skill and clear sound but the two times i’ve been to an oldfield’s concert, i’ve flown with his music…

just my thought anyway
:)

I totaly understand what you are saying Maria, maybe it's not a good idea to compare Mike with Mark K,because although they both play guitar wonderfuly, they have differances, mainly that Mark is more of a songwriter, and is an exceptional wordsmith, where Mike is not!!!!,and because of that Mike uses his guitar as his lyrics, but still playing a classic solo, where Mark uses his guitar to subtle effect, weaving between the words, and playing a classic solo too.But what they both have in lorry loads is touch and feeling, perhaps more than any other 2 guitarist around today!!!,which i feel is where satriani lacks, don't get me wrong,he is an amazing player,in as much as he knows a long of theory and how to use it,but, with the exception of a few tracks"Tear In The Rain" "Crying" "Always With Me,Always With You" for instance he does lack feeling, and even in those tracks you feel a bit cold in his playing.
Two classic examples of what i am talking about:
Mike Oldfield-"Maya Gold" Live
Mark Knopfler-"Wild Theme"Live
That is feeling!!

i completely agree with u about satriani, 'tears in the rain' is one of his most emotive themes and even being played so much carefully is something like if he were reproducing note by note what is written on a score...
about knopfler, maybe u are right, could be not very fair to compare them since they've got so different styles... knopfler's got an amazing voice full of feeling and depth that shares stage with his guitar, i was speaking mostly about what his guitar playing transmits to me.

i'll dive a bit deeper, if u are so sure about, i could be wrong and didn't get his feeling.
let's see
:)

touché... :) the guitar there’s got feeling, indeed it’s a very strong and sensual live, overall the second half of it… that bass rhythm holding the acoustic guitar to the strings explosion… this bit for sure could be compared with some of mike’s brilliant guitar moments but knopfler gets this less usually than mike oldfield i think. anyway this piece of music makes me close eyes to enjoy every detail... yeah, almost forgotten…
just thinking that in this live there's a common point among knopfler (here), pink floyd (some times) and oldfield, an idea slowly developed with guitars riding to the climax and telling even more than human voices... well, just midnight thoughts

I'm also a Mark Knopfler fan and I think that it is very difficult to compare this two great guitarrist.
As I feel the same that you about Mark's guitar,María, I'll try to explain it in my own words and my bad english:
I think that while Mike's guitar makes us travel to imaginary landscapes, letting us fly as we want with our imagination, Mark's guitar "talks" to us about things here in Earth.
 How would I say that?...
Mark's guitar keeps its feet on the ground and talk about things....
Mike's guitar let us see...and sets a path to unknown in front of me.
When I'm listening to Mark's music,my mind moves in the past: I remember someone, or something that happened to me before, always real things and thoughts.
Listening to Mike's music makes my mind fly somewhere where time doesn't exist,I'm not in the future, not in the present,I'm into a "Music Virtual Reality "

It's not so clear,but I hope you know what I mean :)

ps: another gitar theme that  gots lots of feeling ( imo ):
Steve Vai at the G- live concert ( with Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson) .It's a theme he plays alone, but I have forgotten its name; in the concert's video you can see Steve Vai shouting at himself " come on!,come on!" while he's playing.
Does  anybody know this theme, and its name?   ;)

these days doing a backup i've rediscovered among my files a live from dire straits at the royal albert hall in 96, 'sultans of swing'. yes, it's true that knopfler is sometimes able of great feeling . "...u feel all right when u hear that music ring..."
in almost 13 minutes his guitar doesn't let one have a rest from the 5th... well, just a bit over a sweet piano and a whispering guitar and from there... again, gorgeous!!

yep... u were a bit right qjamesfloyd :D

shine, i find steve vai even "colder" than satriani... i appreciate his technique but he hasn't reached me... i don't listen often to him, had some tapes but i don't know that concert :/

Hi Maria,
Glad to hear you found that tape from 96',i think i know what track your talking about, and Mark really does let go with the feeling in that track, some great guitar work in there.I agree about Steve Vai,i have heard some of his stuff, but i just think it's crap to my ears,he plays way over the top,no feeling at all,i can't be bothered with players like him :(

Well, IMHO, the question is what do we call feeling?
As I told before I love Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler.I've got all Dire Straits albums and some Knopfler solo works ( Local Hero, CAL, Princess Bride and Sailing to Philadelphia)
I can say that I love the way he plays guitar, but that doesn't mean that I find "feeling" in everything he does.
For instance, in the album "Brothers in Arms", when I listen to Walk of Life, or Money for Nothing I don't find any feeling.( And I know this is my own opinion, may be you can find a great amount of "feeling" in them,it's only a taste matter).
Cannot say the same about the guitar end of the track "Love Over Gold", from the Album "Love Over Gold": There I find "feeling".That guitar talks.

I don't like Steve Vai's music as I love Mark Knopfler's. And I agree with you when you say that his way of playing guitar is colder than Olfield's, or Knopfler's, but still IMHO I find "feeling" in some of his works, as in Satriani's.
May be it's just that you haven't listenned to some Vai's tracks or maybe it's just that your concept of "feeling" is different of mine...
Anyway, I'd never say that Vai's guitar is (always) like crap to my ears.
It's a great pity I cannot remember that track's tittle.
I'll try to do some researches...Maybe if you could listen to it you'd change your advice about Vai...or maybe not ;)
